MSNBCW With All Due Respect April 20, 2016

Those new york voters, new york values have spoken. The outcome of yesterdays primaries are better for donald trump and Hillary Clinton than expected. Well talk about clinton later in the show but trumps empire state romp gave him 88 of the 95 delegates. In fact, this afternoon, the Washington Post reported on an internal Trump Campaign memo projecting donald is on track to collect 1400 delegates by the time this race is finished. Trumps new york victory speech is getting extra buzz because of his traditional, which is to say nontrumpian demeanor. Gone were the infomercial me. He was on message. A new forward looking frontrunner. We dont have much of a race anymore. Senator cruz is just about mathematically eliminated. We have won millions of more votes than senator cruz. Millions and millions of more votes than governor kasich. We expect were going to have an amazing number of weeks because these are places and theyre in trouble. Theyre in big trouble. When you look at pennsylvania, when you look at indiana, when you look at maryland and rhode island and so many places we have problems everywhere you look. We are going to solve those problems. One of the big problems, one of the big problem s the economy and jobs and that is my wheel house. Mark, donald trump had a rally this indiana which he seemed more like the old trump, lying ted was back. On the basis of that speech, carefully premeditated, what kind of clues did you see as to how he intends to close out this fi fight. He said lying ted today. Two big clues. One is talk about the economy. If he can make the general election and hes the nominee, 2 growth, people having anxiety about the future, he can win that general election. Two, trying to be a bit more g digni dignidi dignified. I got way more votes than anybody else. I should be the nominee. Well come to that topic later in detail. The economic focus is interesting. People around him, the new regime and old regime, theres some said that trump is his strongest when he focused on the economic things. Im not sure that will help him win a general election against Hillary Clinton. Best chance. You could argue the four policy arguments, in a time of terror he could be in a better place with that. I think he will have a hard time winning a general election. Its clear from that speech, at least the people around him think the economy is the ticket. Strikingly, they got him to stick to it. He recognized some of the big leaders of the room. He cannot win a general election unless hes the candidate of business. A democrat like barack obama, bill clinton, if theyre the candidate of business, they win. He put a down payment on that last night. An important moment. Donald trump was acting president ial last night. Ted cruz tried to act unfazed by his weak third place finish last night. He was campaigning in pennsylvania where he called for a oneonone debate with trump with the batch of primaries next tuesday. He met with Party Leaders and thats the campaign has got 9 million in the bank. He repeated his pitch that the texas senator alternative for the stop trump republicans. John, theres a real prospect that kasich will do better than cruz on tuesday. Maybe not in every state but overall. If cruz finishes third, does that hurt the stop Trump Movement . I dont think it does in and of itself. I think the Cruz Campaign is not focused on these states. They are looking towards the western states. Looking at the states we talked about yesterday, nebraska, south dakota, indiana and in california to score big wins and some of those are winner take all to try to stop trump. Cruz is still on track. Theres momentum questions. Theres narrative questions. They mean something. Im not 100 convinced that donald trump having a big night last night and a big night on tuesday will hurt ted cruz with the voters of minnesota and nebraska. You said youre not sure. That is the question. Does momentum still matter at this phase. We talk about the early parts. Eventually its about delegate accumulation. Theres a period where its about both. I believe if cruz is really, if he does has poorly in these North Eastern states, the campaign thinks but if he does worst next tuesday night than kasich by the same percentage as he did overall, i think thats bad for him. Ive got momentum going into inn inn indiana and out west. If he cant beat donald trump in a primary, how will he win a general . There was also this john weaver memo today from john kasichs Campaign Making the argument that the never trump forces fail to take his way as many delegates as they should have. If cruz and trump dilute impacts. Exit polls show something we have been seeing more nationally. 68 of new yorkers said if no republican candidate gets to 1237, the nomination should go to the person with the most primary votes. In other words, almost certainly mathematically certainly, donald trump. Even if the party thinks theres a better candidate out there. Mark, there are obviously arguments, counter arguments but are any powerful enough to trump the trump argument. Very hard to trump the trump argument the he keeps winning big in the popular vote. I think the strongest argument is this is a private organization. The rules for picking a nominee and electability. Even cruz whose electability case isnt as strong as kasich, its electable. Its going to be july. Thats the best they will have. The reality is, i think this say we have various people heralding trumps rise now. Donald trump goes to the convention with fewer than 1237 delegates. If he comes in 10 delegates short, hell be a very weak republican nominee. Mitt romney had the magic number by this point in the contest four years ago. He didnt. Really . He had about 100 more delegates. When did he lock up . Towards the end of the process. Normally you become the nominee, everybody quits and gives up. Trump is not that far behind. That bell rang way too early. We didnt get to the answer. Well talk more about that topic. When we come back, Hillary Clintons victory speech and Bernie Sanders spin master meltdown of sorts after this word from our sponsors. Saving humanity from high insurance rates. There is much that unites us than divides us. We are going to keep our families safe and our countries strong and were going to defend our rights. Civil rights, voting rights, workers rights, womens rights, lgbt rights and rights for people with disabilities. Donald trump and ted cruz are pushing a vision for america thats divisive and frankly, dangerous. Returning to trickle down economics opposing any increase in the minimum wage, restricting a womans right to make her own health care decision. All right. John, looking at clinton speech, what indications are there there that you see about how she plans to position herself now against sanders and in the general . Well, shes not going to say the race is over but it was quite here the race is over. The fact she started to say theres more that unites us than divides us. Thats a theme youll hear over and over again. On the other side, the general election couldnt be clearer. The republicans will destroy the country and will be horrible in every possible way. Its going to be very negative case. Shell have things to say that are positive. So much of what is clear about this race will be very negative and very contrast driven and assault on extremism. People talk obsessively about the obama reelect sending messages to specific groups. The Clinton Campaign plans to do that. It hasnt gotten much attention. They will send messages to africanamerican, to women, to single women. All with the same message about how horrible republicans will be for them. On guns, on reproductive freedom and all sorts of things and health care. I will say if she can get Bernie Sanders to endorse her, raise hundred for her, shell be in a lot better shape. She needs to improve numbers. Last night i thought can she continue her run of strong performances. Shes got to worry the republicans. Shes weak candidate. She looks a lot easier to beat. Shes got a lot to do. Bernie Sanders Campaign has been in spin mode since the loss last night. Late last Night Campaign manager said whatever the state of the pledge delegate count after the voting ends on june 7th, team sanders plans to fight to support super delegates all the way to the convention. Then, sanders Senior Advisor told the Associated Press that the Campaign Plan to sit back and assess where we are, end quote after the five North Eastern primary next week. Divine walked back that comment a little bit saying the campaign will stay in the race until every state has voted. Heres what divine said on cnn this morning. We have to do well next week. We lost a few more delegates yesterday than i thought we would. We are a little farther behind in delegates than i hope to be. I think if we do well we can get back on course to have a pledge delegate lead by the time the voting ends. We lost more than we thought we would. We thought the race would be closer. We can still do it. Mark, the magnitude of sanders loss was greater than either side expected. Given all that messaging confusion last night and what tad divine is saying now, what do you think is the prospect that Bernie Sanders will get out of this race, reassess and stop campaigning before june 8th. Doesnt seem like that to me. She wont have gone fully over until the last day. I think he wants voters to hear the message. He wants to get every possible delegate to strengthen the argument at the convention. I think she wants to continue, i hate this word, but im going to use it. He wants to continue the journey hes on. The trek. I think that the real question is what happens from june 8th forward. I dont have any doubt Bernie Sanders will campaign until june 7th. Theres a question about what kind of tone he adopts. I dont know the answer to that. I think he may back off a little. The question is after that, i think tad divine knows if they are behind in pledge delegates and they are behind by a lot they will not be out trying to convert super delegates. That will be a fools error this summer. The one thing that will be interesting question is does he still call for her to release her speeches and do the hard contrasts. What kind of advertising do they do . They still have a lot of money. They have to spend it on something. And does he want to build a movement thats durable. Say hes not the nominee, does he want there to be a movement that he leads from the senate. Have it be a big force in the Democratic Party thats never been his party. Up next, well ask Sanders Campaign manager, jeff weaver, all these very questions. No more speculations. Horses mouth, weavers mouth right after this. Real is making new friends. This is my body of proof Bernie Sanders woke up this morning facing a wider delegate gap with Hillary Clinton. His hot winning streak is over. We got some questions. Lucky we have someone who can answer all of them. Campaign manager, jeff weaver who joins us from inside the beltway where he is most comfortable, of course. Jeff weaver, good afternoon, good evening. How are you gentlemen . Fine. You said some stuff since last nights results. Tad divine has said some stuff. Tell us what his intentions are and going forward. The dpoel is goal is to win nomination for president. The senator is feeling good. We have five contests coming up next week. Starting tomorrow, hell be c e campaigning in philadelphia and pennsylvania. Were going to be going to the four other states and fighting hard for those delegates. Jeff, which of those states next week do you feel like you have a reasonable prospect of winning . Well, i think rhode island is going to be positive state for us. I think that pennsylvania is extremely competitive right now. I think we have a shot in connecticut. Well fight for the other two as well. If last night, i think you guys been pretty clear was not as good as you thought it would be or hoped it would be. When we last talked to you you said you had a secret list in your pocket that showed you how to get to a majority of elected delegates. After last night, do you still have such a list in. Absolutely. We updated it last night after the results come in. Its dynamic document which is constantly updated to reflect the reality of the number of delegates. Name three states that are left to vote besides california where you think you will pick up substantial delegates. I think we had the opportunity to do great in pennsylvania. I think were going to do extremely well in oregon. I think indiana is very competitive right now. I think were going through may. I think may will be a great month for senator sanders. I think he has the opportunity to recreate. Theres a lot of states where i think he be do well. Jeff, let me ask you to clarify a bit. Let me ask you to clarify something you said on msnbc about super delegates. Its a relatively truncated discussion. For the sake of argument, stimulate at tend of the voting, we wake up on june 8th and secretary clinton is ahead in the popular vote and the delegate count. Will you try to convince super delegates to be the nominee . We have to close the delegate lead that the secretary has. We have a substantially closed the gap of senator sanders had a run of victories. If the general election polls continue to show what they show now and have shown for kaa coup of months is he does better than every republican than the secretary. Just to be clear, youre saying theres a circumstance you can be behind in pledge delegates and behind in the popular vote, it will be appropriate to try to spend the summer to get super delegates to to switch . Given what i told you, yes. I think the place must be filled with fainting couches. The tender mercies of the people who work there, this has been one of the most mild battles in terms of rhetoric ive covered between two candidates. They really get upset when the Campaign Says anything about her. Nonetheless, theres this fetish now in the media and with the Clinton Campaign well Bernie Sanders continue to criticize secretary clinton. Will senator sanders back off or escalate on the comparative issues . This campaign is about a comparison between candidates. Demonstrates your commitment to Real Campaign finance reform. Hes going to keep talking about that. Hes going to talk about the differences on fracking and minimum wage. For those clinton people who say fine, let him keep running but he should ramp down the rhetoric that could hurt clinton in the general election, you say what . What i have to say is what theyve seen in this campaign, this has opinion a mild campaign, as you just pointed out. In the event the secretary becomes the nominee, the kind of fire storm that shes going to face from the republicans will make this look like nothing. Jeff, obviously, its true that she would face a lot of criticism from republicans. I think the concern on the part of the clinton people is you have ratcheted up and criticizing her on on her character and judgment and suggesting shes not qualified at one point during the new york primary. Now accusing them of breaking the law on campaign finance. Those things are giving ammunition against republicans that will be deployed against her. What do you have the say about those charges . I think those charges are base let. The question of judgment has been an issue from the very beginning. Those of us that know politics know theres a book in
