School day will end at 3. 55 and at 4 00 our afterschool programs will begin. Afterschool programs will be housed for students to continue their accelerated learning, their intervention learning, their academic clubs and their sports clubs. Mr. Hobson, before you move on this is an unusual schedule in any middle school in terms of the length of the periods and also the length of the school day. Is that correct . How did. I know the School Board Members have probably heard this, but what was the thought praus is he behind it how did we determine this was the appropriate length of time for learning, what did we learn from the current way our periods are set up . It looks like there is, i mean its not a 7th period but you have an extended school day in this process. I guess im curious about the process of getting to this point and also how the funding occurred for you to be able to have a small classroom ratio and advisory to student ratio. I will answer the first part then hand it over to julia for the funding part. One, i was given a blank slate so we looked at what was happening nationwide. There are National Projects and researchbased reports about extended Learning Space within the school day, not just time across the day and year. Within the School Day Students who attend 50minute classes to 55minute classes and they have 7 period it becomes quite a bit for them to handle. Students who are underperforming do not benefit as much from constant rotation between teachers and classes. Thats one thought we relied on. Second, we wanted deeper learning. We want teachers to have the time and space to facilitate that. The changes that are being made in the shifts in our Education System nationwide are centered around high level dmabd and rigor for the common core state standards and a 50minute course doesnt provide enough time for that deeper learning. With our integration we are using other classes within a particular course or discipline. For example, within a math class the teacher will institute a science practice or engineering practice or ela practice. Students will need time to write about the problem they are solving. Less problems, deeper learning. So thats another factor. Third, theres a shift. If i go back to the vision 2025 document that was cocreated with all of the stake holders in the city under the superintendents leadership, the third item on that document of 10 shifts is redesign space and time. So we redesigned the time and the space in our schedule to match vision of 2025. Commissioner fewer, although you can answer the second part of my question after commissioner fewer. Thank you, supervisor kim, i just wanted to add a Little Something on to what principal hobson has said. I think that at our district we are no longer looking at middle school as an extension of elementary school. We are seeing it as a launching pad for high school and most of our high schools now have a modified block schedule in some way. So this is aligning it with what a lot of our high schools already have, so seeing it as a step to high school we thought a block schedule also would be beneficial because of that. And another thing i think is different is the way were teaching. We are no longer hoping that teachers are not teaching sitting down, students are sitting in front of them, they are teaching at a podium. What we are learned through all of our research is that we need our students to be working in groups. We need our students to be having discussions, we need students to be able to use technology and the teachers to be facilitators of information rather than the teachers being all the holders of information. That takes much more time, much more collaborative work with the students. After we did our vision 2025 and spoke to a lot of people and sort of the tech world, the working world now, they are saying this is how they are working now. They are not working in isolation, everyone is working in groups and also with common core coming down, with our smarter balance assessments, students are being asked to do much more Critical Thinking and this also takes larger blocks of time in order to do that. So its really, what i said about willie brown, capturing all the new research, things they are going to need, skills they are going to have to acquire to be successful in the 21st century. This schedule complements what our students need for the 21st century and using these skills are new skills which we should be teaching all of our middle schoolers but at willie brown since its just coming out the gate, we want to institute this early. In a way i think willie brown is an example of what all our middle schools should be like. We have done a lot of work at the elementary and seminar high schools and our middle school area is really weak. I think you remember that from when you were on the board. This encompasses all the best things you should be doing about middle school. Were there labor issues in having teachers teach in a different module as well, or was that something that didnt need to get worked out for this. We are following the general contract. This is only 30 minutes longer than the traditional day. All our students will have their per diem sty pend for that time. The recruiting process, how are we recruiting process . Okay, its coming up. How did the funding work for the smaller ratio . Obviously we would like this for all schools and im glad willie brown is going to get that because we want willie brown to be successful and i wonder how the funding worked out that we overresource or just adequately resource the school for it to be successful. Our classroom sizes are the same size as any other school, whats smaller is the advisory. That is happening for 75 minutes every other day, that advisor will help manage the personalized learning plan as well as the college curriculum, but thats because were asking all of our staff to participate in this Relationship Building instead of just having core teachers become the advisors. And how are you funding this . I mean the general model is funded the same way as every other middle school in terms of the staff. However, the longer school day was an added commitment that the school board put to this school for the additional 30 minutes every day, as well as the additional 30 for three weeks in june. And the advisors are also from the School District budget, the additional advisors. They are not additional, they are just part of the school staff. Its just rethinking the way that were staffing and using our staff. So we can have a 15 to 1 advisor to student ratio in all of our middle schools currently . I cant speak to all the middle schools. You know commissioner kim, i think we made a commitment in this district to overresource. So, for example, a school of this size would never put in an assistant principal but we felt we had so many immigrant Chinese Students coming or their parents, monolingual chinese speaking, we felt we needed an assistant principal who was chinese speaking. We made a commitment, i have been personally i think in the beginning i was a little frustrated because it was slow to get on board but now i understand its been very well thought out. Deputy superintendent guadalupe guerrero, i have seen many schools inaudible without a lot of thought put into it and they have not been successful. I believe this, the overresourcing of it, the deep thinking and thoughtfulness that has gone into every aspect of this, the commitment to the resourcing and also the extended day, the summer programming i think is going to ensure that this school is successful for these students and this community. So. I just. If you look at the slide now you have a breakdown of whos in the building in terms of staff. So you have 8 Classroom Teachers two engineering teachers, one stem coordinator then the lab teachers are the Additional Support staff. Gym, foreign language, all those teachers would be assigned a portion of the student population to mentor and to advise across their college prep period throughout the year. Im sorry, with the recruiting, how is the recruiting happening and do you have to take within the district first, just certain teachers get seniority, how does that work for a new school . Currently if you look at our recruitment hiring process, every person in the district, every teacher certified and credentialled can apply at willie brown middle school. Clearly we want the best candidates so we are designing an interview process that is already in line with hr hr has its initial process, once county supplies through that portal then we screen the applicants and prepare for an interview. They post a Job Description then a virtual tour of the school, we do a rubric screen, there is an interview with our colleagues at stanford then we perform a phone interview, we bring in our teachers for a model lesson, an inperson interview and finally we do a reference check. We know who will be good to be in line with our children to service our vision of our school. So we skipped a little bit forward in the presentation. What i would like to do, i dont know where we are on time, but i would like to go back to the Health Care Center and talk about that a little bit. inaudible is a key pillar for this school. We are extremely excited to rethink what our wellness support looks like at the middle school level. Were committed to make sure our willie brown students are safe healthy and ready to learn. We are building students who are Health Literate and strong consumers of health. This isnt just a Standalone Health center, this is going to be embedded within the curriculum as well, thinking about stem careers, biotechnology and the health field, its something the students have access to before they need to visit. This is a breakdown of what were staffing as a School District its our traditional support system of a social worker, school nurse and our Community HealthOutreach Coordinator and the department of Public Health is supporting our physical, oral and Behavioral Health practitioners at the site. This shows the model of our proposed model of what this would look like. At the bottom in gray, these are the supports that all students are going to have access to. In the middle there are Additional Supports for a smaller subset then up at the top there is even more intense interventions and supports for students that want to access them on site. This is a space for not just students but also families. Its a Learning Center for parents and families as well about health, good nutrition, ways we can be preventative in our health care for all of our children and this is really exciting opportunity for us to really welcome the community into our school. This is just a quick rundown of what weve done so far. Here weve participated in 20 school site presentations, 9 levels of enrollment and census for our families to engage with us. We have held 7 citywide enrollment events, mostly at Thurgood Marshal high school and they have been phenomenal giving us space. Social media, facebook and twitter, one Community Outreach blast and we are committed to over the summer, once we know who our students are, visiting each home so that the transition between home and school is a solid connection. Our commissioners from the board of education entered the world of willie brown and stomped the grounds, i call them dkt, door knock team. We walked through the community and so here you have special thanks to commissioner fewer commissioner hayen, commissioner mendozamcdonnell, commissioner wynns who knocked on doors in the community and walked through the community and encouraged families to consider willie brown middle school. There is a quick enrollment update. We have 218 students as of today who have applied to willie brown middle school. 135 of those students chose willie brown first place. And that is informal data. We are still processing applications. Here you can clearly see from the communities where sorry, yes. Im sorry, commissioner mendozamcdonnell. Do we know what the ethnic breakdown is of those who have applied . Yes. Quickly, these are the current schools with the highest percentage of students who have applied to willie brown middle school. These are the zip codes that most of our students have applied from. Back to commissioner fewers concern, i any the next largest one would be 94112, i believe thats the excelsior community. Gender was a concern of families as i engaged them, a lot of mothers thought their daughters wouldnt want to attend willie brown because it was a stem school and here we have almost a 1 to 1 ratio of male to female students. African americans are 29 percent of the student population with this current application process data. Spanish, at least spanish surnames are at 29 percent. Chinese are at 12 percent and other white are at 11 percent. So thats the student breakdown of our school ethnic makeup. We covered a little bit of the staffing. I know that the president wanted to move forward. So again the hiring process, these are some interview day activities. We can go into detail on that if you have questions. Ultimately we need your help in getting the word out. On february 9th we are hosting a hiring recruitment event at the office of the board of education, 555 franklin, so in the boards room. That event will begin at 5. 30 5 00. And teachers, networks have received this flyer. At the bottom they can click the url and fill out an rsvp to come join us at willie brown middle school. Thank you, mr. Hobson. We have two members on the roster, commissioner fewer and then commissioner wynns. I want to commend staff because these numbers look fabulous. I think this is really hard work and for the commissioners, and for the supervisors who dont know how hard this was, i just want to explain that most parents, they look at middle schools and the school they choose by test scores. So they are looking at test scores, they are looking at how well has the school done. This is a Brand New School so there are no test scores to go by. We had a couple incentives that helped us. One was if your child goes to willie brown, 6th, 7th and 8th grade, in 9th grade they get their choice of any high school. We are giving them a preference for any school they choose. We knew we had to do this for parents to take a leap of faith that willie brown, they had nothing to judge the academic performance of this so we knew we had to do it. I think its 94124 is 42. 2 percent and we are still counting i understand, that we have enrolled this number. It was our goal to build this school to serve the children in this area since they have been out of a middle school for many years so i think this is fabulous and the diversity, but we have said that if children who go in this area went to their school in this neighborhood that we would have diverse schools and we see here that we do. So i dont think it was mentioned that we have a cap of 200 students, is that correct . So this first class of willie brown will be the founding class. I think what excited a lot of students to enroll to put willie brown as their first choice is that these students will be the First Students to choose their school colors. They would be the students to choose their mascot, they would be the First Student body officers for this school and also they will be always the oldest students in the school, right . So i think that attracted them to this new school. I also wanted to emphasize that the way this school has been designed really complements what were doing with the curriculum too. And as we build out a larger enrollment we will be offering more things. We looked for an orchestra, were looking for much more elective choices and as we grow this middle school to its Maximum Capacity of 600 students that we will be able to offer more things. But this for a first class is fabulous and i just want to say especially that it captures so many children that actually live in this neighborhood. Thanks. Really great job. Thank you, commissioner. Commissioner wynns. I have a couple questions. The first one is where it says enrollment update. You had me print out inaudible . Can you speak into the mic . Im sorry, im not understanding what you are saying. The way the graph, if you look at the slide now on the screen. Yeah. Then you should see data there where you see series 1 and series 2. Thats just the way the printer printed it out. Im sorry, i dont know what you mean by that. I see that there are two bars. What are they, what is series 1 and what is series 2 . Im not saying i cant see it, im not saying i dont have the data, theres no explanation as to what it is. One represents the actual raw number and one represents the percentage. Represents what . The percentage next to it. Its not the best way to format it. Okay, we can talk about that later. I was wondering if we were but it didnt make sense when i saw it. What it looked like it meant was kids who applied by last friday and ones who applied since then but that doesnt make any sense. The next chart so i would like to know eventually what that means. Prrp next chart has the current enrollment current elementary and the bars are not next to the school names. So can you just give us an updated version that actually tells us where the kids are coming from . I appreciate the largest ones on the side, were glad to see they are, the schools were targeting but this doesnt make sense. This graph is not, doesnt tell us. Its not aligned. Absolutely. We can provide the spreadsheet that has all the data to make sure it is aligned with the actual school. Okay, that would be great. I appreciate that. So im going to wait because im going to want to ask some questions about the hiring so i dont want to first i want to hear what you have to say about that. Thank you. Actually i think i we moved that up to when i asked the question about the hiring so i think this is the appropriate time to ask about the hiring. What i want to know is if you can keep us apprised as to the, whos in the pool. I dont mean the names of the people in the pool, i understand the privacy rights, i dont want to know that, but i want to know who is applying, who is getting i
