Reporter it was actually steam. This cell phone video shows just how much. It was that high, like seven stories high. Steam coming out. Reporter Officials Say right around 9 40 this morning, here on 58th street between 6th and 7th avenues, a problem underground sparked a chain reaction. The water leak is what caused a steam issue, obviously water affects the steam pipes in the ground and then you have steam coming up through the ground. That water pipe beneath the roadway sent enough water pouring on to the steam pipe that heavy thick vapors poured out in actually two spots right near each other. Was it a lot of steam . A lot. What did you do . Run away. Reporter including many construction workers who were right in the middle of a job, in a building that stretches from 57th to 58th street. Seconds after the pavement buckled and that steam soared in quickly leaving the area after getting an order on their radios to evacuate the structure. Next thing you know, i see one of the developers running, and i see steam flowing out through the whole entire cellar and thats when they started getting con edison to the building to see what was going on. Reporter once the steam subsided, crews covered from head to toe wearing protective gear on their faces, oxygen masks, gathered samples from the area. The concern, asbestos. Thats why im worried, got to be wearing a mask Walking Around because everything is covered in all that dirt and contaminants in there. And you can see that dirt and some of those contaminants. Police say 21yearold shani patel of toms river was gunned down inside his apartment on Central Avenue in newark last night. Patels roommate was also shot. Hes in Critical Condition in the hospital. Sources tell us they believe drugs may have been a motive behind the shooting. Investigators are on the scene of a fire that destroyed a home in rocklin county. Two people who were inside before it started told firefighters they heard an explosion. The flames broke out on the second floor of a home in hill crest. The homeowner and her adult son the 31yearold son suffered burns to his hands and face. They heard an explosion in the bedroom. Upon arriving, there was fire coming out of the second floor front window. It was already through the roof. Firefighters say the roof and second floor were so badly damaged, that the family will not be able to return to the house. Police in brooklyn are investigating a brazen bank robbery that may have gone unnoticed for days. Police say it happened at the hsbc on 13th avenue in borough park. When employees got to work today, they realized hundreds of thousands of dollars were missing. Investigators say the thieves could have broken in through the roof.
