Today marks one year since the deaths of the two nypd detectives. Both were fatally shot in brooklyn, ambushed while sitting in their patrol car last december. Today Police Commissioner bill bratton will honor them at a vigil followed by a memorial plaque dedication. We are live with todays events. Good morning. Well, in addition to that plaque dedication ceremony which will happen later on this afternoon at the 84th precinct where the officers worked, following that everyone including the mayor, the commissioner will come here to the site where the officers were killed and will lay a wreath to honor them. Shots fired. Shots fired. Reporter it was one year ago today that two of new yorks finest were gunned down inside their patrol car on the street. Officers rushed to the scene but it was too late. The two detectives were killed and their attacker had turned the gun on himself. The violence brought the Brooklyn Community out in mourning as a memorial grew in the spot where the detectives were killed. Their funerals brought Police Officers and Law Enforcement officials from around the country to new york as they stood by the nypd. One detective was 32 years old and a sevenyear veteran of the force. He had been married just two months before he was killed and father of two, just last week his wife of 22 years announced the a foundation shes starting in his name. I want it to be empowering for others. So its nerve racking for me. My husband told me, theres so much more you can do, push harder, you got this. Reporter the Foundation Raises awareness of the dangers officers face on the job and supports families of fallen officers. And for the first time, she will visit the site where her husband was killed. She is expected to attend that wreath laying ceremony this afternoon. Channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you so much. Developing right now oversea, investigators are looking into a suspicious package that forced the Emergency Landing of a flight that was headed for paris. The air france jet landed in hours after taking off from an island in the indian ocean. Passengers say the flight crew announced the plane needed to land and kept everyone calm while the pilot landed safely. We didnt know what was happening actually. And so we sit back and we said we are to land because we have a technical problem that actually was not a technical problem. Kenyan officials retrieved the item found in the bathroom and say the more than 460 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the plane. The flight was headed to paris initially. Investigators are interviewing passengers. Police are searching for a killer after a store owner was fatally shot in jersey city. Investigators were on the scene for several hours last night after someone opened fire inside top plus clothing store. It happened around 4 00 in the afternoon, broad daylight on a busy shopping weekend, Super Saturday no less. In this. Neighbors say the victim was well known and well liked in the community. Very good person, you know. Very nice guy. We would always go by, talk to him in the morning. Sometimes at night, we would go out and pull the gates down. The Hudson CountyProsecutors Office is now looking for the gunman. Investigators have not yet released the victims name. Firefighters in brooklyn found a blind woman who live add loan dead after flames ripped through her home. The fire broke out at her home at east 52nd street yesterday morning. Firefighters found the body of the 64yearold alma crosby inside her home after putting out the flames. It took 60 firefighters to get the fire under control. No word from investigators this morning about the cause of that fire. From brooklyn to jersey city where a First Responder was injured and dozens of people were displaced after a apartment building. Eyewitnesses posted video of firefighters responding to the scene yesterday. It started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second. It injured one firefighter there. The red cross is helping six families find shelter after this. The cause of the fire under investigation as well. Straight ahead on Eyewitness News sunday morning, what began as report of vandalism at an apartment complex in california spiraled into a deadly policeinvolved shooting inside of a hospital. How the situation got out of control very quickly. Loved ones shared their a suspect is dead after a hospital in california. Police say the man was brought to the hospital in Southern California after officers were called to an apartment complex yesterday morning. They say the suspect was throwing bottles and arguing with neighbors and turned on police when they arrived. They subdued him and took him to the hospital and thats where investigators say the man began swinging a metal chair at officers before reaching for one of the cops guns, thats when another officer opened fire, killing the man. The grieving continues for the family and friends of those killed in the San Bernardino terror attack. Yesterday loved ones gathered to say goodbye to three of the victims. Family members say the 27year old was a warm compassionate loving woman. Friday night, her family met with the president and first lady during their visit to San Bernardino. He was very supportive and you know, invited the family to the white house. And just wants to be there as a presence to make sure that, you know, that this woman did not a funeral was also held yesterday for the 57yearold. He worked in south jersey before moving to california. And there was a large Memorial Service yesterday for a father of six whose children range in age from baby to teenager.
