Cool numbers to start the day which today we will see the temperature climbing up above normal for this time of the year. Looking at 55 today. Normal high is 46. Nearly 10 warmer than normal. Weather then heather. Heather is looking at it for you. Mass transit is doing great new jersey transit, Long Island Railroad, metro north are doing fine. Street cleaning rules are in effect today. Lori, over to you. Growing anxiety over the threat of terrorism prompted a primetime speech by president obama to ease fears across the country. President obama knows terrorism at home and abroad is making americans nervous. Last night the president spoke outlining his plan to defeat country. Designed to kill innocent people. Reporter president obama said the San Bernardino and paris attacks show terrorism getting a new phase. In the first address from the oval office in five years, the president vowed the u. S. Will defeat isis and other militant groups. What we can do and must do kill. Reporter the president said he would not send the nation into another long war in iraq and syria. He warned it would be a powerful recruiting tool for isis and they must not create the notion that they are at war with islam. They are our coworkers, sports heros and our men and women in uniform willing to die in defense of our country. We have to remember that. In spite of that criticism, there is bipartisan support for closing the terror gap, a loophole that allows people on the no fly list to buy weapons. 2300 people on the terror watch list requested to buy weapons in the last decade. Dray, thank you. There is a new clue in the search for a serial arsonist in Police Released a picture of a person of interest, a man spotted near the scene of the latest suspicious fire on sunday. Eyewitness News Reporter kala rama is live in forest hills with the latest details. Reporter ken, good morning. Investigators may have their biggest lead yet because of vigilant residents. We took pictures of a man that they believe was acting suspiciously before the most recent fire was set. Take a look. Police want to talk to this man. They are calling him a person of interest in seven fires set starting in early november. He was spotted here in the neighborhood sometimes riding on the sidewalk roaming on his motorcycle, looking at the homes before saturdays fire. This home going up in flames belonged to a rabbi. He was set to move in with his six kids and wife in february. The first time not so bad, this is already now all my plans change. Reporter religious leaders met in forest hills to talk about their concerns over the seven arsons. All the homes under construction that went up in flames are jewish owned. This is not being called a hate crime, rather opposition to the new construction in an old neighborhood. Anxiety is growing and is so is the motivation to find whoever is setting the fires. A driver is now facing charges after a crash that left one person dead and two others hurt in brooklyn. This crash is a 22 pedestrian death since october. Police say marlin swell jumped 5 30 last night. Eyewitnesses say he was swerving to avoid hitting a bus. Instead he hit three people on the sidewalk. A customer ran in the store and said call 911. They said a lady was hit by a car that jumped the cash. I ran across the street and i sidewalk. We learned overnight that 30 yearold victoria nicodemas was was hurt. He is charged with driving without a license. Threealarm fire in brooklyn is causing a few headaches for subway riders. The fire gutted a threestory building in bensonhurst under the subway tracks. Transit Officials Say inspectors from the department a deli worker is back on the job days after fending off two would be robbers in the bronx. Today the man accused of will be in court in what police are investigating as a terrorist incident. He was taken into custody saturday night. Eyewitnesses say the 29year old shouted, quote, this is for syria then he stabbed three people at a tube station. One man was seriously hurt yesterday. Police searched his london home. The attack happened days after british lawmakers approved an air strike against isis tar gets in syria. Police have accused a man in connecticut of stealing human remains. Police arrested 32yearold after police found the remains of five people inside his hartford apartment. Investigators say the bodies date back as far as 1904 and appear to have been stolen from a cemetery in massachusetts. He told police he is a priest who was going to use the remains for religious purposes. We see this rarely in i hope the person pays the price for this. Hartford investigators say they are working with police in massachusetts to make sure the remains get returned where they belong and if anyone else may have been involved. Also in connecticut, the driver who rammed into a hotel lobby is facing several charges this morning. A Toyota Corolla smashed into the claire january hotel and suites early sunday morning. One person working at the front desk was not hurt. Police say 39yearold cory merit fell asleep at the wheel. Investigators charged him with driving with a suspended license. Today we are expected to find out more details about the california mother charged with burying her newborn baby alive. The woman, whose name was not released was arrested in the los angeles area. The little girl was found the day after thanksgiving near a river bed in compton. Than 36 hours old. The child is said to be doing well. Authorities have said that she will be put up for adoption. New jerseys annual bear hunt begins today. This year comes with an expanded area. Bear hunting will be allowed for the six days in all or state wildlife officials added about 600 square miles of hunting in an attempt to manage a bear rising population. They estimate 3500 bears live north of 80 the region some call bear country. Some members of the Eyewitness News team had a very chilly day at the beach but for a good cause. The annual plunge raises funds for a great cause, special olympics. They are brave. They are brave. They raise a lot of money, too. They were like one of the top raising fundraising teams.
