Yesterday the winds were so strong and at least we see a pull back from that. Our average this time of year, and we head towards record warmth territory. That sounds good, doesnt it . Right now weve got teens in monticello. Then were subfreezing across the board with the temperatures below 32 and windchill factor feels even colder. Take a few degrees off what thermometer is reading and expect that wind to settle down over the next couple of hours. By noon, everything should feel really calm. Clouds come in quickly. Were tracking a light flurry so not a big deal, and its not covering everywhere. After sunset, south and west could see a flurry fly. New Jersey Transit workers are facing a march 13th deadline for a strike or lockout despite whats being called productive contract negotiations. This thing is far from over. Eyewitness News Reporter marcus solis is joining us live with more on what could be a big mess for so many commuters if they dont resolve this thing. Good morning, marcus. Good morning, rob, indeed. There will be a rally here this morning. Thats near the woodbridge train station by Union Members as this strike deadline looms and draws closer. Now, the union has set a march 13th deadline for a work stoppage. The union says its members have gone five years without a money and Health Care Contributions. Both sides did meet yesterday in washington. There are more talks scheduled for monday. As we said, no deal yet. A strike would impact 105,000 commuters who ride new Jersey Transit trains into the city to work each day. There are, of course, fears that a strike would lead to massive traffic tieups and delays. I hope they dont strike because that is a real consequence to them and to all of our families who have to take mass transit to earn their living. Reporter so there are some contingency plans in the works. There are five park and ride bus lots that the strike would affect new Jersey Transit rail only. There would be more buses at the Port Authority and increased ferries and increased p. A. T. H. Trains. Still, some are predicting the delays could be up to two hours to cross the hudson into the city. So the contract talks continue, and there will be that rally here later this morning. Solis, channel 7 Eyewitness News. Thank you so much. This morning, police are searching for the person who opened fire outside of a queens nightclub shooting a livery driver in the head. Robert castillo is in Critical Condition. His suv crashed into a pole after he was shot. This is Surveillance Video that you will only see on Eyewitness News. It shows the crash early yesterday morning. Castillo, who is 37 years old had just dropped off several passengers at a club. They went inside but ran back out because they were being chased by the gunman. They jumped back into castillos suv. We believe that the people that were being shot at were inside of his vehicle at the time. Instead of the person hitting the people he was he hit mr. Castillo, the driver. Investigators say castillo is not a licensed livery driver but has been working for a there has been violence at that club before. About a year ago, three people were slashed during a hiphop performance. Also new this morning, police are searching for a robbery suspect whos been targeting banks in queens. Take a look at these pictures showing the man police say robbed a bank in astoria yesterday afternoon. Police say he demanded cash from the teller and then took off. The same man is suspected of robbing a chase bank in Oakland Gardens a little more than a month ago. Turning now to politics. Well, the turmoil and ongoing war amongst republicans and president ial candidates impact a handful of critical primary elections today or will it spark more voter interest . Kansas, kentucky, maine, and nebraska are preparing to caucus today. A fifth state, louisiana, will hold a primary. The Republican Party is still sometimes a raunchy debate. Mudslinging. The husband of a woman found dead more than five years ago. He is in jail this morning. Joseph jones who seemed devastated when we interviewed him back in 2010 is now charged we spoke to jones back then, and he has the details now. Reporter joseph, how does it feel after all this time . Joseph jones said nothing as detectives led him away. Back then, he couldnt stop talking. I can barely sleep. I cant eat. Every time i eat, i throw up and get sick. Reporter it was days before christmas in 2010 when the body of nicole tessa turned up about a football field away from the home she shared with jones and their 3yearold son. Jones claimed tessa disappeared days earlier but waited two days to report her missing. It didnt take long for a police dog to find her body. [unintelligible] i dont even know how to explain to him that a caring, loving mother who tried to do everything she could for her children and her family and everything. Reporter when investigators took jones in for questioning tessa had been arguing over drugs when he left in a huff and she left their son with a neighbor. At the time, the couple argued all of the time. It doesnt make any sense. And that was josh reporting. The details are expected to come out at his arraignment on monday. Today, a candlelight vigil will be held to remember a College Student who died in a possible hazing at a college upstate. The friends and family of bradley doily will march to a nearby park where they will release balloons. Doily was 21 years old and played basketball at buffalo state. He died last month. Cops ruled his death suspicious. Toxicology results have not yet been released. Also today, a Memorial Service will be held in texas for a former nypd officer david hoffer was shot during a gun bat well a suspect near dallas. On monday, a Memorial Service will be held at st. Patricks cathedral in manhattan. Bill bratton is mourning the death of his father. He was 89 years old. He served in the navy during world war ii. He later worked double shifts at a post office and a Metal Plating shop to support his family. He also worked the docks of boston as a longshoreman. In this mornings health alert, a curious connection between a lack of sleep and getting the munchies. Right now, our sunrise is 6 23, and the sunset is just before 6 00 p. M. As we go to march 13th, not too far away, right . 7 01 will be our sunset. Well have brighter skies longer in the afternoon. Thats going to feel pretty good. A cold start today but less wind. We get the isolated slick spots where we have snow. Some of that melted overnight right there on the surface. Sun to clouds through the afternoon. A trace of snow early on sunday. This is about 4 00 a. M. To 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow, mainly west of the city. Southwest it starts, northwest it ends. Then we get a spring preview. Brooklyn feels like 13 right now. Feels like the upper teens and low 20s in a lot of places. Windchill is a factor as you head out the door this morning. It doesnt stay that way. Well see the temperatures coming up quickly in the sunshine. Temperatures will stop in the 40s. The light northerly winds will improve. Already feeling the edge of the clouds here. As that happens, were dragging in a chance for snow. On the futurecast, look how little of it shows up. By 2 00, we have the clouds around here. 6 00 at sunset. Weve got no precipitation, but late tonight, after midnight into the Early Morning hours, theres a little bit of flurry activity. Its something to watch. Weve got warm air pushing in, and were 15 to 30 degrees above average. That puts us in record territory. 42 today. We drop to 32 with that isolated snow shower and then to end the weekend, our snow showers will be just very flurrylike until 6 30. Then we have sunshine in the afternoon, 44 degrees. Heres the accuweather seven day forecast. Were up to the 50s on monday. 60s by tuesday. There it is. Wednesday. Were going tore 70, and thursday 50s with friday 64 degrees. I want to share a little bit of the trip with you because a lot of it as always, can be traced back to the weather, as you know. I like to bring the weather back into play. Please. On vacation, we went to kauai, which is the northwestern island of oahu. We went on this trail, see how muddy it is . I did it with my son, whos almost 18, and it was incredible. 22 miles total. Backpacker magazine called it one of the ten most dangerous in the u. S. Outside magazine called it one of the 20 most dangerous hikes in the world. Sounds like a vacation. At points, this trail became as narrow as two shoes. Really . And other parts, look at the cliff dropoff. Oh incredible views, and while we were there, that was the destination of the hike right there. Highest waves that theyve had in 30 years. They were able to have the big eddie surf tournaments that they havent had in seven years. It was incredible. Every step of that hike for 11 miles in and 11 miles back was a challenge from mud to extreme inclines. Then they have something called the crawlers ledge, which you almost rock climb across. Now, thats where you posted the picture that said danger, and you were showing that was another place called queens bath, which was extremely dangerous during the winter. Because theyve had the high surf there and people go down and sort of sunbathe amongst the rocks. Even while we were there, they had a death. Different places are dangerous. So you have to research. I spent a lot of time researching the trail before i went on it. Our whole crew went to the part that was very safe. We didnt get on the ledge. You had a fascinating trip. Was it relaxing . Time own vacation. Dont you hike all of the time on vacation . All the time. I do, from the hotel to the tiki bar. [ laughter ] i love the pictures on social media. Lots of beautiful pictures.
