I there is good evening and welcome to the Jimbo had a job with Westwood One radio we would 106650 Jimbo 186-6505 or 626 online you'll find us a Jimbo Talk dot net You can follow me on Twitter at Jimbo talks and in this portion of the program we're going to be taking a look at a disturbing trend that has developed in this country and I think we might just summarize it as young people who don't grow up or won't grow up I'm not sure just exactly how you define this but it's a circumstance that is really quite troubling and that we're going to be examining that in this portion of the program because these are people who in some cases have already achieved the age when they're supposed to be grown up and you have to wonder if they're going to if they're going to reach the point when they will in fact be doing what they're supposed to do and that is lead the country and to presumably the free world Laurence Cain joins us a bestselling author and he is a father as well and a senior leader at a Fortune 50 corporation to talk a bit about safe spaces and participation trophies and helicopter parents the coddling of an entire generation in this country as long as Cain thank you for being with us tonight no problem having to be here. Is there a Dr Benjamin Spock or anybody out there that one can pinpoint certainly a lot of the things that happened with the baby boomers early on can be pinpointed by one person deciding that we must said he had far as I'm concerned be began this whole don't damage their self-esteem movement but by the time of course that this generation was so afflicted he was was kind of old hat was there one person whom the parents gravitated to and said well he must be right as many of them did with Benjamin Spock I'm not sure there's one person but there's that whole singling of we want our kids to do better than we did and you know she we had to struggle and she we got spanked and we got timeouts you know this could be damaging to our self-esteem whatever and it's a pendulum like anything else that society or as a challenge is that we have skewed so far to one side that we're actually not teaching kids how to cope with we're a life and they go all to become very dysfunctional adults as a result of it not everybody of course but many women. And it does it seems to be enough of a trend that we can talk about it in this sort of circumstance sure there are always exceptions and thank goodness we somehow seem to be people in our volunteer military with people who either have not been so afflicted or have had it drilled out of them during boot camp but I'm not sure quite how sometimes it seems to me that that generation like there are 2 entirely different groups those in the military and those who are. Here is part of the challenge our the challenge is is that folks conflate words with actions or the old nursery rhyme sticks and stones may break my bones you're never heard me right we're now days hateful speech microaggression all these you know things around the language are treated as they're just it's just as bad as getting shot or stabbed in as a guy who's been bold words aren't the same as bullets they aren't the same as knives they aren't going to actually damage you but when you think they are any re atthis if they are and you set policies as if they are you kind of mess with people's heads and frankly it's kind of nice that most of us don't have to worry about violence on a daily basis but we've kind of gotten a little too soft and when you start conflating somebody using words with somebody using service or guns or whatever it just doesn't make any rational sense and yet that's what led to Safe Spaces that's what's led to this whole biker aggression slaying you know all the stuff that we're seeing in colleges where people don't have to listen to something that they don't want to hear and all the sudden you end up with massive groupthink you get people who don't know how to lose you get people who think they walk on water when they don't and it's really kind of sad it is that I want to talk about that that 1st Amendment aspect of all of this in just a 2nd but to get back to the notion of of the military. Obviously we are turning out young people who are quite resilient and quite resourceful and I'm wondering is it tougher maybe you haven't gotten to this I don't know but I'm wondering if it's tougher for drill instructors these days to deal with this generation I mean obviously at at boot camp basic training at least I certainly hope you don't hand out participation trophies although I would note the move in the military to give everybody Berets which was simply a. Had the impact of diminishing the importance of the bar a you tell me Well what's happened is competency based right either can set this meet the standard that's been set or you can't do that the good news the bad news is that they've walked the standard down a little bit this here's the thing it's a volunteer military both of my nephews are in the Air Force Once enlisted and once an officer they came from a military family they didn't grow up like a lot of their peers they played football they wrestle they did those competitive sports they went hunting My son is a football player and college coach he's also an r.a. You know these are kids who grew up with coping I'm sorry to interrupt you but an r.a. Resident advisor Ok the guy when somebody stealing a lonely 'd and doesn't know what to do or broke a girlfriend they feel suicidal or you know gets drunk and or overdoses he's the guy that fixes that stuff oh Ok please go ahead yes sorry friends so you know the point is that because it's people salsa locked into the military and the kind of folks who go into the military or folks like my nephews like my son like some of my friends' kids there are folks who really grew up a little differently than a lot of their peers and in the you know most of them have done some kind of competitive sport or they've done a martial art or they've been a shooting sports or hunting or fishing or things like that where you know they actually get a visceral feeling for how the real world is and it's not a hugely difficult transition I think if we had a draft and people weren't self-selecting in it probably be a different story. Well certainly if we had a draft that would be a lot better for the country I know members of the uniformed military active or retired I've talked to many of them on this program more than a score I'm sure and not a one of them would want to go to that as I have pointed out to them you may be right that that would not be the best for the military but sometimes what's best for the country may not be necessarily what's best for the military having said that going back to this this whole thing about it is microaggression if you hear something that you disagree with that's remarkable on on college campuses of all places supposedly the home of intellectual rigor what in the world has happened here I mean how can professors even those who are who are die hard leftists and I would have to say frankly that many of them are but but don't they think that it might be beneficial if even their their recruits their cod re if that's what they're trying to create were able to cope with ideas that they didn't necessarily like in order to be more effective. Do that well you think so but I'm not sure that that's actually the goal of the higher education system it's not to make people more effective it's to have a set of clientele who pay a lot of money to get a piece of paper that says that you are now eligible for employment and people self-selecting nowadays and sometimes in ways they don't think about so let me give you an example if you've done a google search right George several So when you if you go search is Google identifies whether you're conservative or liberal based on keywords that you look for and starts changing what you see in the results of your search and they all do that and so what's happening is you start to solve associate with people who think like you you know liberal folks tend to meet shit on Facebook Twitter expect. Their searches are similar and they start only hearing the messages that resonate with them when they hear a different message and it's foreign it's very uncomfortable and they don't know how to deal with it and so I don't think it's that people are trying to brainwash each other or something like that but it's a matter of people are hearing the same message you get this groupthink thing and then social media people feel validation from other people liking them you know clicking positively on that post or whatever it is right and so they stop thinking for themselves they become part of the group and frankly they're turning into useful idiots as opposed to people who know how to think constructively and how to look at logical arguments and really only their own opinion based on facts and data and information quite frankly today it is possible to be quote well informed quote and never think an original thought which just got a very let's talk to the flock to dawn in the Albany Oregon on the jail video with our unscathed our guest Good evening Don even how you all doing we're fine doing great myself I was just going to ask your guest isn't part of basic training making sure the people they get can take it as well as dish it out. You know and the Army and Army National Guard myself Well of course you know Don you're right I mean part of getting through basic training is meeting a set of competencies some are physical some are mental you're learning about leadership you're learning about physicality about you know hand to hand combat except for us because we want people who are going to be functional on a battlefield eventually if it gets to that right and so definitely basic training is designed to bring out the best in people it's kind of like you know the Tough Mudder and things like that that folks who don't go to the military go to sort of prove their mettle and you know folks who are willing to do that it really changes them because they're facing hardships that they never thought they could do as a kid I did Outward Bound very similar concept where you're pushing yourself to what you thought you were you were your limits and beyond that and go wow I could do that you know knowing that nothing you know nothing is totally want to fight it well I I guess I'm not sure what you mean by that statement nothing is totally one sided done but you know it's you know basically our way or no way. Well I. Let's put it this way that the military instills in you certain values of self-reliance that are quite important but I again I'm not fucking Alicante there never has been a war where one side or the other just stood there and took it like why it's going to slow down or Oh no I said I don't know that that's true Ok so later also hasn't there also hasn't been a war where one side completely destroyed the other side right it's all about breaking the other side will fight either politically or physically or whatever and so what happens in war is you know you're there to kill people break things and blow stuff up and tell the other guys give up and so that's part of why in basic training in advance for any in the military folks are learning how to be tough they're learning how to be leaders because you never know you know the 5 guys ahead of you on on the chain of command you might be taken out by a roadside bomb or something now of a sudden you're in charge right things happen and they knew caring for every eventuality exactly We'll take a quick break and we'll be back with more here but 1st of all let's not all of you guys and gals are you hoping for thicker fuller and healthier hair without the long wait the brand new Provia super concentrate from Shabani was created with you in mind this tiny bottle packs 4 times the power of previous key ingredient for noticeably faster and more visible results Dorothea from Delaware says I love Provia I was so self-conscious about my hair that I bought several wigs forever cleaning hair out of the shower the sink and off my pillow not a problem for me anymore revitalising hair follicles on improving scalp circulation naturally and without side effects your one phone call or click away from stronger fuller younger looking hair say goodbye to wasting your hair in the brush in the sink or on the pillow try Provia now and you'll get the new super concentrate absolutely free with your order call 1800. 720805 the new Provia super concentrate works or your money back guarantee but it's limited time offer call 1807200809518072080 dime 5 back in a moment the choice of a lawyer is an important decision and should not be based solely upon advertising your wits and whatever it is responsible for the content of the said attention if you or your loved one had an i.p.c.
