Virginians head to the polls tuesday to help pick the republican and democratic nominees for president. The state is one of a dozen super contests whose outcomes could go a long way in determining each partys eventual winner. The limited polling available in virginia shows donald trump ahead in the republican primary and Hillary Clinton leading in the democratic race. Republican party of virginia chairman john a record turnout of voters in the gop primary. His democratic counterpart, susan swecker, says turnout on the democratic side should be robust. Virginia is an open primary, and registered voters can vote in either primary. U. S. Rep. Scott rigell of virginia is imploring his fellow republicans to vote for anyone but donald trump. In an open letter sent to supporters tuesday, rigell said it would be nothing short of catastrophic to the gop if the billionaire businessman becomes the republican president ial nominee. Gop past super tuesday virginia s 2000 george 50 huckabee 199003 41 158099 60 ron paul 36572 9 howard dean its called super tuesday for a reason so far only a handful of states have had primaries or caucuses and only a small percentage of the delegates have been allocated for both parties. Two percent on the democratic side and five percent on the republican side. After tonight that goes up quite a bit. To nearly a quarter of the delegates being allocated for the democrats and about 30 percent for the gop. Today more than 14 hundred delegates are up for grabs. Virginia has 109 democratic delegates and 49 republican. After today the next big contest is march 15th. Thats when voters in florida illinois missouri North Carolina and ohio will head to the polls with more than a thousand by the end of the month about half of all democratic delegates and almost twothirds of the gop delegates will have been allocated. Even though donald trump is expected to pick up some big wins tonight in several states and possibly in all of them he could be facing a losing battle. Thats according to a new cnnorc poll just released today. In a hypothetical general election match up between trump and sanders and clinton both democrats beat out the republican frontrunner. Senator sanders topped trump 55 to 43percent clinton with a slightly smaller margin at 52to 44percent.
