The Blooming Grove barracks, where seven weeks ago shot s rag out. A small contingent of wellwishers is here to cheer on police as they come and go. There were very few people in this community and with Law Enforcement who thought this manhunt would end this way. Fellow troopers of slain Corporal Bryon Dickson lifted a wobbly eric frein from a patrol car. He was walked into the same Blooming Grovetown ship barracks where he allegedly pulled the trigger september 12th. He was handcuffed wearing corp. R ral dicksons handcuffs. Sources close to the investigation say the fbi and u. S. Marshal searchers surned an abandoned hangar late thursday afternoon. Someone had reported sighing a man going in and out. Sources say eric matthew frein was taken into custody as he tried to get back inside the hangar. The man who had been on the run for almost seven weeks surrendered without incident. One source saying frein was, quote, depleted and had no fight left in him. Sources tell nbc10 he was found with a knife and the. 308 caliber rifle believed to have been used in the ambush. As freins motorcade pulled into the Blooming Grove barracks a large sign had been quickly drawn up saying simply, way to go Pennsylvania State police. And at the Blooming Grove Police Barracks, tight security where eric matthew frein is in custody. Now, the prosecutor, the District Attorney here in pike county says they are still working out the details of his arraignment. That will be something that will be a fluid process but they want to decide how public a process to make the arraignment of eric matthew frein. Doug, youve been out there for weeks watching the exhausting toll this has taken on officers. Its hard to imagine their emotions tonight. Well, this has been a process that went from sheer adrenaline in those early hours and days to sort of a marathon. And there was outpouring of public support but you could start to see it fray as the fear factor of the eric matthew frein manhunt started devastating the economy. Not just in the search area in the poconos but throughout the entire region. And there was a lot of feelings that a lot of displeasure and impatiens in the community might have bubbled to the surface and become critical of the Police Search efforts if this search had dragged on another few weeks. The governor and Pennsylvania State police are just now beginning to hold a News Conference on the capture of eric frein. Were monitoring the news con freens. There is still a lot of Police Activity outside the hangar. Nbc10 Lehigh Valley Bureau Reporter reports now from monroe county. Police have blocked off the road leading into this abandoned hangar. We have seen Law Enforcement moving in and out of this roadblock all night. Now, a quarter mile down the street is that hangar where u. S. Marshals captured the fugitive eric frein. We cannot get any closer because according to Law Enforcement sources theyre checking that hangar to see if theres anything they may have left behind. Eric frein whisked away from his hiding spot in the back of a police cruiser, captured here at an old airfield built in the 60s and long forgotten. At a bar down the street, a sigh of relief. Dont know how long he was there but, yeah, it was a little scary he was that close. Reporter in the coming hours you can expect the airfield to be searched for evidence. Its unclear how long frein was here but this place has been abandoned for years. Theres usually not much traffic coming in and out of here. Were outside the birchwoodpocono airfield. As weve been reporting the extensive manhunt for frein impacted the lives for thousands in the search area. Schools have closed. People have been told not to leave their homes. Tonight, a celebration. Nbc10s George Spencer joins us live. George . Jacqueline, after 48 days, residents told us tonight this search had impacted their lives in ways both big and small. Just within the past hour we tried to get a response from the suspects family and we confirmed that one sign of regular life here, tomorrow nights trick or treating is now back on, thanks to the capture. When i got the phone call this afternoon from my chief of police, i was like, thank god. Thank god this is over. Barrett township supervisor said life here had essentially been on pause. Everyone waiting as Law Enforcement hunted pennsylvanias most wanted. But tonight, that mood changed. What went through your mind . I thought it was wonderful. Reporter as the sixweek search moved through this area, schools were closed down on multiple occasions and at times residents couldnt even access their own streets because of the search. My wife was at choir rehearsal one night and could not get back home because they wouldnt let her into our neighborhood so she had to sleep on somebodys couch. Somebody on the family be a spokesperson . No. Goodbye. Off the property. Reporter late tonight the man who answered the door at freins parents home refused to speak. The suspect was found 14 miles south of here and as soon as tomorrow some basic rituals that frein turned upsidedown will return to normal. You have good news for kids tomorrow night. Yes. Reporter there had been a lot of disappointment when those festivities were canceled because of the manhunt. The reversal here came in a late night meeting among township leaders as really a lot of residents here breathe a collective sigh of relief. Search crews found serbian cigarettes. There was a journal found police described as cold blooded and chilling with frein allegedly writing about how he ambushed the troopers and escaped. Over the last seven weeks searchers used dogs and even balloons this week to try to spot him. Its important to remember the state trooper killed, that started this manhunt. Corporal Bryon Dickson was a husband and a father. He used to work in the belmont baracks in philadelphia. Nbc10 joins us live from there tonight. Jacqueline, that trooper used to work at this barracks here behind me. So he came here to try to get some reaction tonight. No one inside wanted to talk but they tell me off camera that they feel a sense of relief now that frein has been captured. Its been 48 days since Corporal Bryon Dickson was killed by a snipers bullet if married father was in full uniform when he walked out of the Police Barracks and shot to death on september 12th. Within 90 seconds of the ambush his accused killer, eric frein, managed to slip away. This is his wife and two young sons were forced to bury their father and husband. Dicksons fellow troopers and others in the Law Enforcement community then had the difficult task of trying to find the man who killed their brother. Then tonight Law Enforcement officials confirmed frein was captured by u. S. Marshals in an abandoned airplane hangar. It was news that brought relief to a community on edge and closure to a family. As to the troopers inside they say the best news wasment that he was caught but, rather, that when they caught him, he was cuffed with dicksons handcuffs. That is the latest from belmont tonight. He is under very, very tight security. Theyve got the compound with Pennsylvania State police. And of course, what is grown across the street from all of this is a contingent of wellwishers cheering on officers as they come and go from the barracks. Just a short while ago several of the investigators involved in this marathon manhunt talked about the sequence of events leading up to surrounding eric frein in that abandoned aircraft hangar. When they approached it they saw an individual that they thought was eric frein, and they ordered him to surrender, to get doup on his knees and raise his hands, which is what he did. Once they approached him he admitted his identity and he was taken into custody. He was turned over to the Pennsylvania State police. As the governor said, corporal dicksons handcuffs were placed on him and he was put in corporal dicksons car. Reporter there were all sorts of scenarios about how this manhunt would end. Some in a hail of bullets, some thought it would be eric freins suicide by police. Very few thought it would end peacefully as one source told me tonight, eric frein just seemed to be depleted, he seemed to have nothing left. Back to you. Doug. This began at september 12th at the state Police Barracks. Three days later, freins suv was found submergedsq in a swa near the shooting scene. By the 22nd, the manhunt involved 1,000 officers. To october on the 16th, trooper alex doug sdpl Alex Doug Douglas left the hospital and discharged to a rehab facilities. Schools were closed after a possible sighting of frein on the night of the 17th. Tonight, the 30th, eric frein is captured, ending that 48damon hunt. As we go through the overnight hours tonight, its going to be colder tomorrow morning. Making for a pretty chilly halloween, kind of like today. Once the trickortreaters go out at night, a lot of them might want a jacket. As we start off the weekend, starting with saturday, some showers start to move in. Both saturday and sunday though it will be pretty windy. Saturday will be the windy, cold, rainy of the two. Right now areas north and west are in the 30s. 37 in pottstown. Mid 30s in the poconos where we do expect temperatures to get freezing there. 46 in bensalem. 49 in philadelphia. 45, wilmington andover. Low 40s through much of our south jersey suburbs. It will be colder than this as we go into tomorrow morning. For the bus stop in the morning, its going to be a cold one. Areas north and west, mid 30s around philadelphia, low 40s. And in the suburbs, about the mid 30s still. So temperatures will be colder than they were this morning as we go into the weekend. We still expect some cold afternoon temperatures. Overnight lows for the rest of the area, 37 for reading. Quakertown, 35. For the morning low in allentown and trenton, morning low temperatures will be in the upper 30s. Doylestown, 40 degrees. Mt. Holly, closer to the shore tomorrow morning, mid 40s. 36 possibly. 41 nor wilmington. About the upper 30s and areas surrounding philadelphia. Now, we are watching two other systems though as we go into the weekend. In the meantime, we will be staying dry as we go into friday. Off to our northwest and also off in the atlantic off the southeast coast, an area is forming that will be giving us some rain as we go into saturday. Future weather keeps us dry for tonight. Rain will be here for halloween. Good news as we go into friday erping, both weather systems will be closer, in between the two so you notice the rain offshore and rain off to our west. Then comes saturday. Some of this rain from offshore starts to move in. Cold air from the other system starts to get here, too. Lit be it will be a cold, windy, rainy day. One day seeing rain.
