A bitter cold monday on tap and a windchill advisory i should say in effect for the poconos. A closer look at our temperatures. 29 degrees in the poconos right now. 34 in allentown. 34 in pottstown. Were still in the high 30s here in philadelphia dropping to freezing in dover. And as you wake up tomorrow morning, we are going to see colder temperatures and our temperatures will continue to fall throughout the day, especially as our wind speeds pick up. By 6 00 a. M. Were talking about temperatures in the mid20s. 26 degrees for philadelphia. 21 in redding. As we go through the rest of your afternoon, youll notice by the time you head home from work, were talking about actual temperatures at 18 degrees. 12 degrees in allentown and in the Single Digits for the poconos. Mostly cloudy skies tonight. Im also tracking how long these cold temperatures are going to stick around. Ill go over all the details in my first alert sevenday forecast. Weather may be responsible for underground explosions in center city. Smoke poured out of a manhole late this afternoon. It happened at 15th and locust streets, forcing evacuations and street closures. Nbc 10s doug shimell is live at the scene. Doug, what is the situation out there right now . Reporter i just spoke to peco a few minutes ago, and they said there is so much slush and water in the manhole that they had to get a special vacuum truck in here to suction it out to see just what it was that started to smolder late this afternoon. It was a choking black column coming out of the ground that started feeling the 1500 block of locust street. Smoke pushing outout of it which affected 1520 locust street causing high levels of co. The building was evacuated. There were only Building Contractors in the building at the time working. Reporter fire crews say a couple of underground explosions blew open a manhole cover and forced an evacuation of a nearby deli. We have checked various buildings in the area of locust street for any additional readings of carbon dioxide, but at this time were look good, negative readings. Reporter underground fires on one of the cables caused the blast and theyre using cameras to inspect the blast. Due to recent cold weather and melt today could be affecting electrical water, gas service. Reporter peco told me a short while ago they did have to turn off the power to one of the buildings here in the block of locust street between 15th and 16th while they make repairs. The burned out medical building at 52nd and locust streets has looked more like an ice palace since the fire six days ago. Lni official says the owner is trying to find a Demolition Company to tear it down. In the meantime residents dont feel the fenced in collapse zone is big enough to protect the public. I worry even at this close, its going to go all the way to the other side of the street. I worry that they should have still had this blocked off. An eightinch water main broke near the intersection of fayette street and wadsworth avenue. Crews spent the afternoon repairing that break. Amtrak service in the northeast corridor will operate on a modified schedule tomorrow due to continuing weather related problems. New at 11 00, crews had to rescue a firefighter who was hurt while battling a fire in berks county this afternoon. Investigators say the firefighter fell through the floor of the affordable shop. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries battling a fire in Chester County tonight. It broke out after 7 00 at a home on highland hill lane in charlestown township. One firefighter broke his ankle on the ice. One had chest pains, and another suffered minor burns. It took firefighters almost two hours to put out the flames and the weather posed additional challenges. Ice and snow is always a battle this time of year. You know its bad enough fighting the fire inside. But the guys outside have to battle with the ice in staying upright. The family inside the home was not hurt. Their house suffered extensive damage. We have new information on an afternoon gas leak in south jersey. Psg e officials tell nbc 10 they have repaired that leak tonight on flanders road in burlington, new jersey. It prompted the evacuation of ten homes. The cause of the leak remains under investigation. Well, a man is dead after he was shot inside a home in south philadelphia. Police say someone shot the 54yearold victim twice in the chest. Inside a home on the 1900 block of south 22nd street just before noon. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. No arrest have been made. A show of support in philadelphia today for a pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf moratorium on the Death Penalty. Members of the Philadelphia Campaign and the Living Church hosted program on the Death Penalty in olney. It was part of a black History Service at Zion Lutheran Church exonoree. Governor wolf cited wilson as one of the reasons for a moratorium on the Death Penalty. Wolf announced last week that he would issue reprieve for death row inmates until he receives a legislative report on the Death Penalty. So those are the spots, especially where were at freeze organize just below where the melted snow is going to refreeze for the particular, and sidewalks. And our roadways are a major concern. Well see most of our arctic air over the region monday night into tuesday, and well start to see a retreat a little bit heading into wednesday. It comes back thursday into friday. It doesnt get much better as we head into tuesday. In fact, it gets worse by the time you head to work on tuesday. Its only going to feel like zero degrees. It will feel like minus 5 in allentown and minus 8 in mount pocono. As we head into tuesday evening well slowly start to see our conditions improving. Samg same thing for wednesday. Our average this time of year is 45 degrees. Tomorrow well see a high of 25. By tuesday just a high of 24. And the thing with tomorrow is well continue to see falling temperatures. So to actually get colder as we head through the day, it will be even colder by the time youre heading home from work. Temperatures drop down to 19 degrees. 23 for philadelphia.
