New this morning a woman is under arrest accused of stabbing her boyfriend in cobbs creek neighborhood. They say the 54yearold man had been stabbed in the chest. He underwent surgery early this morning. Today over a dozen area churches are marking their final mass. This comes after the archdiocese of philadelphia announced plans last month to merge those 16 parishes. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live at one of the Churches Holding their last services today. Matt . Yes, rosemary. St. Mary Elizabeth Seton is on the list. The parishioners is hoping the parish changes their mind. We were there as they celebrated their own final mass. July 1st they will merge with our laeg of peace in millmont park and these 16 parishes will become worship sites after july 1st. Notre dame said their Church Building will still be used for weekend masses throughout the end of the summer as part of the transitioning period and some of the reasoning is proximity to other parishes. Some they say are currently too close together and parishioners say they built their church but they dont want to let it go like this. The past few weeks our parish has united in such a way i have never seen before. People have come out of the woodwork to support us and the community. Reporter some parishioners have launched petitions even putting up signs around town, but it is the archdiocese to make the decision to your turn any appeals. Right now those appeal are with the archbishop. None have ever been overturned since the first phase of the merger process started in 2010. Parishioners say they plan to take this all the way to the vatican if necessary. Yesterday local catholics went on a traveling protest to speak out against the church closings. Off in the germantown section of philadelphia. As you heard matt mention, 16 of those churches are set to close and merge with other parishes this weekend. Protesters say the archbishop is not doing his job. So my message will be for the arches archbishop to really put his head where its supposed to be and come out to talk to people. Were carrying the figure of him because he doesnt want to do the footwork. The protest ended at the basilica of st. Peter and paul yesterday afternoon. Happening right now, hundreds of volunteers have just wrapped up a 17mile walk to raise awareness and money for suicide prevention. The outof the darkness walk started at the Philadelphia Museum last night at 11 30. They walked all around the city. The event is sponsored by the American Foundation for suicide prevention. A freak accident in philadelphia is under investigation by the department of licenses and inspections. Yesterday a security gate at a ritas water ice stand fell on a 3yearold girl, killing her. A large group was gathered at the ritas on girard avenue in brewerytown yesterday when the gate suddenly fell. Dozens of people jumped into action to try to lift the steel gate off the girl but it was too late. Witnesses tell us it is something that will haunt them forever. You walk across the street and you see a baby laying lifeless and theres nothing you can do. We did reach out to the citys licenses and inspections department. Lni said the buildings are responsible for maintenance, inspections, and rolldowns of it. The department will only inspect a gate if theres a complaint and before yesterday there were no violations on that security gate. In camden, a house collapse will keep inspections officials busy there today. The twostory home collapsed just after 8 00 last night. Investigators say that the vacant home caught fire and then collapsed. Firefighters spent two hours searching through the rubble to make sure that nobody was trapped. I told us that no one was hurt. In philadelphia, police say an argument led to the shooting death of a man in frankford. Nbc 10 was on penn street yesterday afternoon. According to investigators, the man was shot after he got into an argument with another man. Family members have identified the victim as robert knight. Police have not made any arrests in this case. Now, to a story we first told you about yesterday morning. A house fire in north philadelphia that killed a child and his great grandmother could have been prevented. Thats according to fire officials who responded to the tragedy. Seven people were in the row home at the time and only five made it out alive. The two died in the fire. The cause is being investigated. The fire commissioner told us the victims had closed their door as the flames spread, they could have bought themselves more time to be rescued. This morning investigators are trying to determine why a small plane made an Emergency Landing near the delaware river. The aircraft took off from New Castle County airport in delaware yesterday morning. It wound it on the new jersey coastline a short time later. News 10 was over the scene shortly after the Emergency Landing. Officials are not sure what went wrong during the flight forcing the pilot to set the plane down in the marsh.
