Reporter the shooter who fired not once but twice along newkirk street in broad daylight is still on the run, this as a 3yearold boy who awaited Christmas Gifts under his tree may now spend it in the hospital with a graze wound to his cgro. Police tonight still trying to make sense of who was the intended target, if anyone. In the sidebyside row homes in an area plagued by drugs and gun violence. We believe he was trying to shoot someone else. Reporter neighbors didnt dial for help. Regardless of the circumstances, they still need to call 911. Reporter a man who identified himself as mo, the toddler victims father and who had been to the hospital would not comment on camera about his sons injuries or if he knows anything about the shooter. Right now we cant say that he was the intended target but its definitely something we will explore. Reporter so police at this point want to interview that 43yearold shooting victim who issuely drove himself to the hospital at the university of pennsylvania earlier this afternoon, just within the last couple of minutes, he arrived home on crutches. Now to the tragedy in new york. The ambush killing of two Police Officers. Today, the citys mayor called for new yorkers to put aside the protests until after the officers are laid to rest. Nbcs Chris Pallone reports. Reporter as the memorial to two murdered nypd officers grows in the bedfordstuyvesant neighborhood of brooklyn within the citys mayor is calling for a halt to political protest and finger pointing, the focus turning to two grieving families and their fellow officers. Lets accompany these families on their difficult journey. Lets see them through the funerals. Then debate can begin again. Reporter earlier, the mayor and Police Commissioner William Bratton visited the families of officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu. The two were gunned down saturday afternoon, assassinated in the words of police as they sat in their patrol car. Ismaaiyl brinsley, driven at least in part by hatred of the police ambushed the officers before killing himself. Police say brinsley had been arrested 19 times. His mother told him he was often violent and said he tried to commit suicide last year. But some believe recent nationwide protests over Police Tactics caused brinsley to act. Some new York Police Unions feel betrayed by de blasio who has criticized the eric garner grand jury decision and police tactic. Officers turn their backs on de blasio when he visited the hospital where the officers died saturday. But bratton dismisses the criticism. This is something that should be bringing us all together, not taking us apart. Reporter a spat over policy being fought by politicians as new yorkers and their police force mourn the citys loss. Chris pallone, nbc news. Ahead at 5 30, were working on new information about Ismaaiyl Brinsley, the man police say shot and killed the two new York City Police officers. The number of officer fatalities this year is more than 20 higher than last year. Its according to the chairman and ceo of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund inc washington, d. C. 49 officers were killed with guns across the country this year. Thats up from 31 officers last year. The number of officers killed in ambush attacks has now tripled the annual average. I think the message is loud and clear, we need to tone down the rhetoric, rally around Law Enforcement, these men and women who are out there protecting us and putting our lives at risk and we need to rally against lawlessness in this country. In california has the highest number of Police Officer deaths with 14 this year. Pennsylvania lost 4 and new jersey lost 3. In response to the Police Killings in new york city, Philadelphia Police are changing routines and pairing up. But across the river in camden, the chief says nothing changes. Chief Scott Thompson tells nbc 10 he wont overreact. He is telling officers to be vigilant. He said Community Police has transformed parts of the city and he doesnt want to mess that up. We cant allow it to change what our mission is. Every day we have to get out here on the streets and connect with the people. Chief thompson also tells nbc 10 that crimes have been cut in half since the city began community policing. Nbc 10 is following breaking news in north korea. There are widespread internet outages across the communist country but the u. S. Declined to say if its an act of retribution for the hacking at sony. The fbi linked the hack to north korea last week. And on friday, president obama said the u. S. Government would respond. We are pretty well above freezing. Temperatures really will not be dropping off too much as we go through tonight. Rain mainly south of philadelphia but as we go into the later evening hours, some patchy light rain, even fog forming later tonight which could be causing some travel delays come tomorrow morning. Police say a day care worker left them in an illegally parked car while she shopped. Then a truck towed that car away with the girls still inside. Authorities arrested the day care worker, they say Tanya Robinson left the girls in her car while she went to the Plaza Shopping Center friday. The tow truck driver told officers he didnt know the girls were in the car. He is not charged. Hes accused of ripping off hundreds of clients for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Tollefson says hes now representing himself in his fraud case after his attorney stepped down last week. Hes now hoping to find a new lawyer to work pro bono. Tollefson pleaded guilty earlier this year to defrauding people by failing to deliver on Sports Charity packages. He now insists hes innocent and plans to prove it in court. I believe i did not have any criminal intent and the new evidence is very, very important to the decision that i made one week ago today to withdraw my plea. A fire hydrant gives way, spewing hundreds of gallons of water into the air in one maryland community. Just look at the force behind that water. It happened this morning as firefighters were using the hydrant to extinguish a house fire around the corner. The owners were out of town. When they return they have quite the mess to clean up. New information tonight on the fate of u. S. Army Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. The case is now in the hands of the army. Bergdahl disappeared in afghanistan after walking away from his base in june 2009. He was held captive for five years by the taliban and was covered in may as part of a prisoner exchange. The army could do nothing or courtmartial bergdahl which may bring nothing more than a dishonorable discharge. The drones, the unmanned flying machines are a hot seller this christmas. As nbcs brian moore reports, there are also concerns about safety. Drorchs like these are high on many a Christmas Wish list this year. As these devices take off by the thousands, so is the concern about safety. We want you to know before you fly. Reporter thats why the faa and hobby groups have launched a new campaign to teach drone pilots the rules of the road like keeping drones below 400 feet, away from crowds and five miles from airports where near misses have become an increasing concern. These unmanned vehicles are hot sellers. They come in all shapes and sizes, no license needed. Its a lot like riding a bike. Its not hard but you crash a lot when youre learning. Reporter the faa is under pressure to draft sweeping regulations that balance safetk and privacy concerns with commerce. We want to see the faa get it right. Theres huge potential there. I would hate for this industry to be setback because of some terrible accident that happens as a result of someone operating irresponsibly within the air space system. Reporter but with formal faa regulations up in the air for the time being, drone owners are being asked to learn the rules before they fly. Today, lawyers for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev compared Media Coverage of their clients case to that of Oklahoma City bomber timothy mcveigh. The bombing inflicted injury on the entire population of greater boston, similar to the mcvey case. Mcveys 1997 trial was moved to denver. A judge rejected tsarnaevs first request in september to move the trial. Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty. The trial begins january 5th. Aaron hernandez was in court for a final hearing before his murder trial begins next month. Hernandez is charged in the shooting both of odin lloyd. H hernandez pleaded not guilty to killing lloyd. Hernandezs fiance, jenkins, appeared earlier in court, charged with perjury in the hernandez case. She pleaded not guilty. Youve got to see this. Firing up controversy. A holiday billboard in one Northern California town is sparking debate tonight. The owners of a gun range in chico have a sign depicting Santa Claus Holding a gun. The sign reads we build ars for santa. They have a license to build them as well as sell them. The owner says people give guns as gifts. Some residents say people need to see the humor in that sign. Others say its in poor taste. I just dont think i would like my son to see Santa Holding a gun. Santa has got his eye protection on, his finger off the trigger, the gun is pointed in a safe direction. We should have had mrs. Clause on there with bows and arrows.
