A big warmup for the workweek thats coming up. Lets get back to that breaking news. We are following updates in this warehouse fire in north philadelphia. Its been burning for just over three hours now. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live on the scene. Jesse, fire crews, are they making progress this morning . Reporter rosemary you can see behind me they are starting to have a little bit of progress, although every now and then the flames flare. They are having an impact. Lets take a look at our video, shortly after our cameras arrived around 2 00 this morning here on fox and westmoreland in north philadelphia. This 65,000 square foot warehouse complex. The twostory section is the part thats actually burning. Dozens of firefighters pieces of equipment have been on scene spraying water on this. We have three aerial water hoses that are right now pouring water down on to the flames to try to tamp them back. Flames are shooting out of windows as you can see from earlier video. I talked to the fire department. They say theyre wj that area could collapse so theyre keeping people back. Hope to have more information from the commissioner coming up in the next 30 minutes or so. New from overnight, an explosion at a berks county titanium plant killed one and injured two others. The cause of the deadly explosion is now under investigation. Call it a case of fighting back. Philadelphia police say robbers tried to hold up two friends who were coming home from work. One of the vicks had a gun. This is the intersection in overbrook where police say a pair of young Armed Robbers confronted the friends walking home thursday night. One of the victims was shot and killed. Detectives say the other victim pulled out his concealed carry handgun and shot both suspects. This is the second deadly botched robbery here in recent weeks. A man walking his dogs was gunned down earlier this month. Neighbors tell us it seems that carrying a legally owned gun is the only way they can feel safe. But its sad. Thats not how i came up. You can walk to the store, walk somewhere. You didnt have to have a gun. Its sad you have to kill the kids now. If not, the kids will kill you. The man who fought back was not hurt but again, his friend was killed. One of the robbers died. The surviving suspect is in Critical Condition and will face charges. Investigators are calling the deaths of Cooper University hospitals ceo and his wife a murder suicide but the couples children dispute that. John and Joyce Sheridans four adult sons say that the Somerset County prosecutors report is speculative and plan to file a lawsuit. The report comes after a sixmonth investigation which found that cooper hospitals ceo John Sheridan killed his wife, set their north jersey house on fire and killed himself last september. A former Cumberland County day care owner is facing charges after a 15monthold boy drown while she was watching him. Prosecutors office says that roxanne lacy was caring for six kids at sunshine day care in millville last november. According to investigators, lacy was inside with one of the other children when the boy drown in a gold fish pond. She was charged with operating a Child Care Center without a license. Lacy would have needed a license to care for more than five kids. This morning, police in voorhees want you to take a good look at these pictures. The two men you see right here are persons of interest in a robbery that injured an elderly man. 83yearold man was robbed near the robin Hill Apartments on preston avenue. Police say he was treated at the hospital for injury to his face. Nobody will be charge thats the word from Philadelphia Police after this 4yearold girl tried to take a bus ride by herself in the middle of the night. According to investigators, the girl got herself dressed and left her house in tacony around 3 00 yesterday morning. She boarded the bus telling passengers that she wanted a slushy from a convenience store. The driver called police and stopped the bus until officers arrived. This day and age, stuff going on, somebody could have picked her up. It was scary to see her out there that time of night by herself. Police reunited the girl with her mother at the hospital where the girl was checked out a few hours later. Today, the phanatic will lead the way as 5,000 racers take part in the Phillies Charities 5k. Participants set off from Citizens Bank park in just a few hours at 8 00. They run around fdr park and end up back at Citizens Bank. This is video from the beginning of the race last year. The event raises money for Phillies Charities group which awards grants to a variety of local organizations each year. For many people, Superstorm Sandy is a memory but not for one jersey shore fire department. They have a daily reminder of the storms impact and theyre demanding changes. 2 1 2 years after Superstorm Sandy flooded their firehouse at 29th street and west avenue, about 15 professional ocean city firefighters are still stationed in a trailer during every 24hour shift. Its home base. The station 2 firehouse only houses department vehicles. The trailer sits next door. Its an embarrassment to the city and its an embarrassment to the neighborhood. Theyre here 24 hours a day to protect and serve the citizens of ocean city and they do deserve better. Fire Department Officials say so far the city has spent more than 40,000 to rent the trailer, exceeding its 30,000 value. But plans are in the works for a new building. Special canine units will sniff for anyone possibly trapped beneath the rubble of three apartments leveled in a gas explosion in new york city. Emergency workers are searching for at least two people still missing since thursdays blast. They say a third person may also be unaccounted for. Investigators are looking into whether someone tampered with the gas lines setting off the explosion. Sources tell nbc news that someone may have been trying to steal gas. A Boston Police officer is in Critical Condition this morning after he was shot during a traffic stop. The Department Says somebody jumped out of the car and shot the officer. Other cops returned fire and killed the suspect. A woman was caught in the cross fire but her injuries are only minor. Two other people in the car are in custody on unrelated matters. Now to los angeles where a driver surrendered after leading police on a chase. The stolen car had the words we support our local Police Department written in the back window. At one point during the chase, Police Nearly had the car cornered in a parking lot but the driver plowed through shopping carts and sped away. A little while later, the braver stopped the car and he and his passenger surrendered. A fraternity now confirmed members at the university of oklahoma likely learned a racist chant during a National Leadership retreat four years ago. The University Investigation found the same thing. This video of Sigma Alpha Epsilon members sparked the scandal. Two students were expelled and the schools chapter was shut down. Amanda knox is now officially a free woman after an eightyear legal battle. Knox gave a brief comment outside her seattle home last night after Italys Supreme Court overturned the murder conviction against her and her boyfriend. Her former boyfriend. The pair has long maintained their innocence in the murder of amanda knoxs roommate, meredith kercher. She was released from prison in 2011 but last year her acquittal was overturned. Im incredibly grateful for what has happened the justice ive received the support ive had from everyone from my family friends, to people like you. Yesterdays decision is the final ruling in the case. If the court had upheld her conviction knox would have faced 28 years in prison. When asked what the future holds, knox says she doesnt know. Shes still absorbing the present moment which is full of joy, she says. Now to the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525. A german hospital is denying reports that it treated the copilot for depression. But the hospital does confirm that Andreas Lubitz was there for a diagnostic evaluation on march 10th, two weeks before he deliberately crashed a passenger jet into a mountain in the french alps killing 150 people. French prosecutors announced that lubitz hid evidence of an illness from the airline, including a doctors note excusing him from working the day of the crash. The news is causing mixed emotions for some of the families of those killed on that flight. Im really sad for the father the parents of that young pilot. Experts say lufthansa could be looking at unlimited compensation claims for the crash. They say it would be difficult and maybe even counterproductive for the German Airline to try to avoid liability. Take a look at this. Its a deck that fell off the side of a Washington State house after a landslide. Three homes have been evacuated in the town of seattle. Nobody was hurt but officials are concerned because the soil is still shifting. Experts say there have been a few small slides in that area before but nothing on this scale. Californias governor signed a more than 1 billion relief package to address the states drought. It could use some rain of course but Scientists Say snow is really whats missing. The snow pack in the mountains is about ten feet lower than usual for this time of year. That could create a dire situation because it stores the water and gradually releases it down into the lowlands during the spring and summer months. Very different situation for the northeast.
