Today is going to be a lot like yesterday. Yeah, it is. Its humid, its warm. Already really warm to start out with. We have kind of gray skies, a little haze out there. We may see the chance for some storms like we did yesterday. Lets go ahead and take a look outdoors. Theres the gray skies. Mostly cloudy on this sunday morning, mostly the haze over the city. Temperatures already into the 70s across the area and we actually have some showers falling at this hour. So back to the west in
Lancaster County
,
Chester County
to the south, and in
New Castle County
in delaware parts of
Cape May County
in southern new jersey were seeing some light showers. So everyone has a chance. Were seeing some showers and everyone has a chance for seeing thunderstorms later on today with that humidity in place. Right now, we are very mild. Temperatures already into the 70s in a lot of spots. 73 already in philadelphia. 71 in horsham. 72 in wilmington. As you step out this morning to the north and west were looking at temperatures mainly in the upper 60s, the low 70s, 71 in reading. 72 in quakertown. And you are walking out the door to 68 in oxford. Now, along the coast, temperatures mainly in the 60s as well. 67 in beach haven, as well as avalon. Further inland were into the 70s. 70 in woodbine and 73 in millville, new jersey. Mild to start, warm to finish. Well see temperatures into the 80s. By 11 00, 79. By 1 00, 82. And by 3 00 p. M. 84 degrees. Well track the chance for those thunderstorms later on this afternoon, and then tracking a cool off later on this workweek. Well do that in just a few minutes. Amtrak crews are coming off another night of work to restore service between philadelphia and new york by tuesday, which would be one week after the deadly derailment in port richmond. The new timeline came on the same day officials with the federal
Railway Administration
ordered amtrak to make immediate changes. The first is for amtrak to put the automatic train control system or atc, into effect for northbound trains approaching the frankford curve, which is where train 188 derailed. The system helps control a trains speed. It can stop a speeding train. Second, the feds want amtrak to assess the risk of curves along the entire northeast corridor from washington to boston. Also amtrak must increase the number of speed limit signs on the tracks. Amtrak says it will abide by the immediate order. Passengers tell us it will make them feel safer. I think its essential. I think it should have been there. I think anything that were stopping an accident like this would be great. The nbc 10 investigators learned that the
Hightech System
for stopping a train, automatic train control, atc, has long been installed on southbound tracks coming from new york. A decision was made not to install it on the northbound side so there is this gap. Ntsb officials have said that if it was in place, it would have prevented the deadly derailment earlier this week. The broken corridor. Thats what some
Railroad Officials
and supporters are calling amtraks northeast trail system. Stations along the corridor including boston new york philly wilmington baltimore, and d. C. The tracks handle 2000 trains every day, but the railway is decaying, with trains lumbering through tunnels and across bridges more than a century old. Even the electrical grid that powers the trains dates back to the great depression. By one estimate it would take more than 20 billion just to replace parts that have already outlasted their intended usage. In terms of the investigation, here is what we know. The fbi is continuing to look into the cracked windshield of the amtrak engine. The big question is did a flying object hit the windshield just before the train derailed on tuesday night and what kind of effect did that have . According to investigators, objects hit both a septa train and an amtrak acela train, right around the same time that night, in the same area and caused window damage. Nbc news interviewed a passenger on the acela train. He says the windows of his rail car smashed. We heard a loud noise in the car, and immediately, i looked over and there was a the window had shattered and apparently there was a rock thrown at our car. The ntsb says that brandon bastian, the engineer of the derailed amtrak train cannot remember the events in the minutes leading up to the crash. Bastian told authorities he only remembers ringing the train bell at the old north philadelphia north station. You can count on nbc 10 for complete coverage of the deadly derailment on our website, nbc10. Com and on our nbc 10 news app. There you can learn more about the lives of the victims and the history of train derailments in our area. Now to news from our jersey shore bureau. Investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that gutted a popular boardwalk shop just one week before the unofficial start of summer memorial day weekend. Take a look. The flames ripped through the seventh street surf shop in ocean city. We first told you about this fire through a push alert from our nbc 10 news app last night. The blaze broke out a around 8 00. Crews managed to put the flames out in less than an hour. One worker who was inside got out safely. Ive been a part of this place for 10 or 11 years now and worked here every summer so its tough to see. The hard part is, with boardwalk businesses right now, theyre all loading up for the holiday weekend, so theres a lot of merchandise in there that is obviously destroyed at this point, but also fueled the fire. Firefighters tell us the that neighboring businesses sustained some smoke damage. Employees of the surf shop say that they will reopen. Today,

When you fill up your tank in jersey you dont even have to get out of your car, but that full service may one day be a thing of the past. Next, the details on the proposed change being considered by lawmakers. At 9 23 on this sunday here is a live look at lake wallenpaupack, up in the pocono mountains. Some clouds out there. Its going to be a little bit cooler to our north today, but temperatures are going to be warm. Its going to feel muggy for the most part. And we do have the possibility of some showers in the forecast. So keep that umbrella handy. Its going to be very similar to yesterday, when you head out the door. Its a perk of getting your gas in new jersey. You dont have to pump it yourself. But that could change under a bill being introduced in the state assembly. The proposal would allow selfservice at the gas pump. It would call for a threeyear transition period at first in which stations could still provide attendants to pump gas. Right now new jersey and oregon are the only states that do not allow selfservice. It could be a case of stalking and following before going after the target. Philadelphia police have arrested two suspects who allegedly robbed a man of 13,000 in casino winnings. It happened as the victim arrived at his house, from the sugarhouse casino early yesterday morning. He was home when this happened. He told authorities one of the suspects approached him with a gun and took his money, wallet and iphone. Police say they were able to use the phones gps to track that suspect back to the casino. Its the sound of police and fire pipes and drums being plaid at a tribute to fallen philadelphia fire lieutenant joyce craig. Nbc 10 was in north philly yesterday, as the
Second Alarmers Association presented a memorial canvas print in her honor to the members of engine 64. Lieutenant craig is the first female firefighter to die in the line of duty in the departments history. She lost her life responding to a house fire in
West Oak Lane this past december. Lets head down south now, where this weekend, thousands of mourners and members of
Law Enforcement from all over the country paid their respects to a
Mississippi Police officer who was shot dead during a traffic stop. Funeral services were held yesterday for 25yearold officer liquori tate. Authorities say that tate and a fellow officer were shot and killed a week ago. A funeral was held for that other officer on thursday. Police have arrested 29yearold marvin banks. They say banks shot the officers after they pulled over a car that was being driven by the suspects girlfriend. The time right now is 9 26. When we come back on nbc 10 news today, well take a look at the days top stories, including a building fire in conshohocken that gutted two businesses. Just ahead, well go back out live to
Monique Braxton who has more from the scene. Michelle . All right. Another warm day today. Ill let you know just how warm were going to get in just a few minutes. Contained, but not under control anymore. A new development at the scene where a hundred firefighters have been working to extinguish the flames that ripped through a building in
Montgomery County. Were live in conshohocken where many families in the area are without power this morning. Keeping riders safe on the rails. The changes the federal government is demanding before amtrak can get up and running again along the northeast corridor following the deadly train derailment. Get ready, its going to be a hot one. Here is a live look over center city. Warm and humid today. Also, some wet weather on the way. Good morning. This is nbc 10 news today. Im rosemary connors. Its just before 9 30 on this sunday. Lets get a check of that sunday forecast now with meteorologist michelle grossman. Michelle, youre also watching some changes in the forecast for the week ahead. Yeah we have some bigtime changes. Were going to be a lot dryer, were going to be cooler, and see a lot more sunshine once we get closer to memorial day weekend. So yesterday, it was hot. We were at 86 degrees, as a high. Today, its going to be warm once again. Lots of clouds down at the shore. Heres a live look from cape may. We do is see some people walking. Its a mild start to the day. Well see that fog in place for a lot of the day, at least that haze, too. So some showers the place, back to the west in parts of
Chester County
Lancaster County into northern and central delaware and also southern new jersey. So as youre out and about this morning, some of you may see some showers. Some are seeing partly cloudy skies, some are seeing mostly cloudy skies, and some are seeing all clouds. So a mixed bag across the area. Everyone is starting out mild. Were seeing temperatures mainly in the 70s across the area. 73 right now in philadelphia. 76 already at 9 30 in the morning. And to the north and west were looking at temperatures in the upper 60s, the low 70s. 71 in reading. 71 right now in oxford and 66 in mt. Pocono. Now, along the coast, were looking at temperatures around 68 in avalon 68 in beach haven, and by this afternoon, well see temperatures popping up to 84. So summer like today, and well cool it back down during your sevenday. Well look at those numbers in just a few minutes. Now to this breaking news in conshohocken
Montgomery County. Take a look. An nbc 10 viewer sent us these photos from building fire that burned for hours overnight. Nbc 10s
Monique Braxton has been at the scene since dawn and has been fighting the massive fire. Reporter i should first tell you, this is a very shrewd situation. The chief told us hes only been on the job a couple of months and hes still assessing the situation. As of right now, 9 30 the fire is contained, but it is still not under control. And he tell us thats because they had a chance to get inside and look around and theres still a few small fires theyre working to put out. But nonetheless, as you can see, smoke is rising and blanketing the bearding neighborhoods of conch hock skpn plymouth. We now know this blazed that gutted both
Philadelphia Floor store and sintex companies. One of the owners is on scene. Both companies were unoccupied at the time the blaze began about six hours. This chief also tells us some flooring products inside containing petroleum and extremely flammable, are fueling the flames still inside, those hot spots as well as the billowing smoke that you see. Theyre working with the department of
Environmental Protection regarding the runoff of water. I asked him, should people shelter in place, because that had been put out earlier, before we spoke with him. And he said at this point, yes. The wind has shifted. The chief also said that earlier, he did not foresee any danger but right now he is urging people to shelter in place. Now, overnight, there were multiple collapses and explosions inside shortly after the threealarm blaze got going to a good clip. No firefighters were injured, though. Ladder trucks are still here fiercely attacking this smoke and the flames down below. More than 100 firefighters have responded from all over
Montgomery County. And we should also tell you, because i know that folks in the neighborhood are worried about this they do not have electricity and gas at this point. And there is still no word on when both will be restored. But the firefighters say they are awaiting the arrival of heavy equipment as they term it because they want to take down some of the buildings,a8[g so that they can go inside battle the blaze more intensely, hopefully get it under control, and then clear out of here to get the debris out of the way. Live for now from conshohocken
Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. Amtrak crews are continuing to work to restore service between philadelphia and new york by tuesday, which will be one week after the deadly derailment in port richmond. The new timeline came on the same day officials with the federal
Railroad Administration ordered amtrak to make immediate changes, before they can get the trains up and running. The first is for amtrak to put the automatic train control system in effect for northbound trains approaching the frankford curve. Thats where train 188 derailed. The system will stop a speeding train. Second the feds want amtrak to assess the risk on curves along the entire northeast corridor, from washington to boston. Also amtrak must increase the number of speed limit signs on the tracks. Amtrak insists, it will abide by the immediate order. Passengers tell us its going to make them feel safer. I think its essential. I think it should have been there. I think anything that would stop an accident like this would be great. The nbc 10 investigators learned that the
Hightech System for stopping trains automatic train control, has long been installed on southbound tracks coming from new york, but there are gaps on the northbound side. Ntsb officials have said that if this had been installed, it would have prevented the deadly derailment earlier this week. In terms of the investigation, heres what we know. The fbi is involved and they are looking at that cracked windshield of the am track engine. The big question is did a flying object hit the windshield just before the train derailed on tuesday night . According to investigators, objects hit both a septa train and an amtrak acela train, right around the same time that evening, in the same area and caused window damage. Nbc news interviewed a passenger on the acela train. He says that the window in his rail car just shattered. We heard a loud noise in the car, and immediately, i looked over and there was a the window had shattered, and apparently there was a rock thrown at our car. The ntsb says that brandon bastian, the engineer of the derailed amtrak train, cannot remember any events in the minutes leading up to the crash. Bastian has told authorities he only remembers ringing the train bell at the old north philadelphia station. You can count on nbc 10 for complete coverage of the deadly derailment on our website, nbc10. Com, and on the nbc 10 news app. There you can read more about the lives of the victims and the histories of train derailments in our area. In other news president obama will be visiting the region tomorrow, when he meets with police and children in camden. Its a city his administration has designated as a promise zone. The designation means, in part that
Small Businesses in camdens neighborhoods are eligible for government grants. Larry miles owns a bookstore. Hes also a longtime supporter of president obama, but miles tells us that the president has to bring the right message with him when he comes to camden. With the coming in here that he also focuses on the fact that there are people in this city that want to help that want to be independent. Essentially, the president s visit here is not the crossing of a goal line really its the crossing of a starting line with tremendous momentum. Camden is trying to keep that momentum going. The city crews sprucing up for the president s visit. The
Democratic Candidates in philadelphias race for mayor only have a few more days to stump for votes before tuesdays primary election. Most of them plan to be out on the campaign trail today. Nbc 10 has teamed up with the philadelphia inquirer, daily news, and philly. Com to bring you the only independent poll of voters. Heres what we learned. More than 40 of democrats polled say they will vote for jim kenney followed by
Lynne Abraham and anthony williams. 14 of voters are still undecided. We caught the three frontrunners stumping for those undecided votes yesterday. Jim kenney sliced roasted pork for their anniversary. Anthony williams stopped by the dawa day street fair and
Lynne Abraham attended a
Police Survivors benefit. Heres a look at all six
Democratic Candidates for mayor. Along with the three we just mentioned, nelson diaz doug oliver, and they will face
Melissa Murray bailey in the general election in november. Today on nbcnbc 10 issue, well have more with
Lynne Abraham and jim kenney about the race and why they each believe they should win the nomination. A i have big fat baseball bat and im going to stand at home plate and swing at the big problems that have come across the plate that people tend to shuffle off to the side. I think what you see now is the real jim kenney. Its certainly more disciplined, because the job youre asking for requires more discipline. But i think he also needs to be authentic with people. Im a philadelphiian through and through. We have interviewed all of the candidates throughout the primary season on issue. Tomorrow philadelphias
District Attorney will vote yes for universal prek. Set williams will be joined by preschool children for a mock vote at city hall. Voters will be asked about the citywide plan for universal prekindergarten on the primary ballot this tuesday. The d. A. Says twothirds of preschool aged children in philly do not have access to highquality prek. Lets talk about the weather now. 19 tornadoes touched down between texas and minnesota last night. Check out this incredible video. Storm chasers shot it near the town of elmer, oklahoma. The tornado damaged houses and businesses. Fortunately, nobody was hurt but the storms did cause some power outages. One of the tornadoes actually came very close to some farms, but the cows didnt really seem too concerned. I guess, what could they do . They just continued to graze as the storm approached. Its unclear if any of the animals were harmed during the storm. Stopping isis. The u. S. Has killed a
Senior Leader of the terrorist organization but, the government says this is not necessarily a game changer. Well explain. And mcdonalds employees were handing out happy meals, but some of them werent very happy about doing it. Just ahead, what franchises at the fast food chain are accused of doing that has workers suing. Theres over two hundred thousand students in philadelphia. Jim kenney and
Tony Williams are fighting over
Public Schools versus charters. I think theyre both wrong. Its making sure they all get a good education. Teachers should have their contracts respected. They also should be held accountable. And its wrong philadelphia gets less
School Funding than other parts of pennsylvania. Ill work with harrisburg to change that. But if they refuse ill take them to federal court. As mayor ill do whats right for them. Welcome back on this sunday morning. Were seeing mostly cloudy skies in philadelphia. Depending where you are, some spots seeing partly sunny, some spots even seeing some rain. Heres a live look outside. Were looking at
Citizens Bank park and looking at some showers back to the west of philadelphia, the south and east of philadelphia and parts of northern and central delaware extreme southern new jersey back through
Lancaster County and
Chester County in pennsylvania. Some light showers falling right now. Everyone, though seeing the warm air in place, temperatures mainly, in the 70s already. 73 in philadelphia. 71 in reading. 76 in northeast philadelphia. 73 right now in millville. It is 70 degrees in wildwood. That temperature is going to climb and its going to climb pretty quickly by this afternoon. So as we go throughout the afternoon, 11 00, mostly cloudy 79. By 1 00, 82 and by 3 00 84 degrees. Well above normal for this time of year. Even tracking the chance for showers and gusty thunderstorms later on this afternoon. Could contain some hail and also some wind. Well look at that in just a few minutes and were tracking a bigtime cooldown for your memorial day weekend. Well look at your sevenday in just a few minutes, too. The u. S. Takes down an important target. The white house confirms that
Army Delta Force commandos killed a senior isis leader during a raid in syria early yesterday. Abu sayyaf managed the terror groups oil and gas income. The commandos flew in from
Northern Iraq they got into a gun battle and there was some handtohand combat that also killed about a dozen isis militants. The commandos escaped unharmed and took sayyafs wife with them. She is talking to u. S. Officials. Defense experts say while this will not stop isis it does show that the u. S. Is willing to use force to take down its targets. Today secretary of state john kerry is in south korea to talk about security and trade. Kerry arrived in seoul earlier this morning. Republican White House candidates a little bit better this morning. They had a dinner last night in des moines. Both announced and unannounced gop hopefuls called for stronger u. S. Presence in the world. I missed steps, for sure. I answered a question that wasnt asked. And also just before that dinner, jeb bush addressed the ongoing controversy this week. He made that admission about his stance on the iraq war. The former
Florida Governor was one of 11 republicans trying to gain support before the 2016 iowa caucuses. A judge in northeastern pennsylvania says workers can sue the owners of 16 mcdonalds restaurants. The lucerne county judge gave class action status to a 2013 lawsuit which claims that the owners of those 16 mcdonalds paid employees with debit cards that came with numerous transaction fees. After the suit was filed, the owners said that they would give the workers the choice of being paid by check, direct deposit, or the payrolled debit card. The time right now is 9 46. Night rain slow things down a little bit at
Citizens Bank park, but did it swamp the phillies winning streak . Well have the highlights in sports. Whats happened to snacking . How did it become absentmindedly eating one after the next . We are a creamy cheese that
Still Believes in savoring our food. The laughing cow. Reinvent snacking. All right. Good sunday morning. Im meteorologist michelle grossman. We start out the weekend with some storms nymph. Some gusty winds. We reached a high of 86 degrees. Summerlike to start out our weekend, summerlike to end it just as well. Nong i dont think were going to make 86 but either 84 or 85. Were starting out very mild across the area. Heat and humidity in place later on this afternoon and that could spark a few rounds of showers and thunderstorms once again. Taking a look in philadelphia 73 degrees, mostly cloudy skies. Looking a lot like yesterday. Depending on where you are right now, youre seeing partly sunny skies, some spots seeing some showers, some spots seeing clouds, and then in philadelphia, were seeing mostly cloudy skies. Winds out of the southwest at 8
Miles Per Hour with that southerly flow bringing up that humidity and bringing up those temperatures. Youll feel it when you step out this morning. Temperatures mainly in the 60s and 70s. 69 in allentown. 72 right now in westchester. 73 in philadelphia. We are mild to the south and easy as well may know in the 70s. 73 right now in millville. 72 in dover, delaware. 69 in stone harbor and 74 at the
Atlantic City airport. So i mentioned those showers, lots off to the west in our immediate area were looking at
Lancaster County
Chester County seeing some light showers, just on the edge. And as you look towards parts of philadelphia, at least south of philadelphia delaware seeing those showers, as well as extreme southern new jersey. So everyone has a chance to see showers throughout the day, mainly in the afternoon, and everyone has a shot to see some thunderstorms as well. They could be gusty like yesterday, and certainly a lot of heavy downpours with these with the humidity in place. Lets take a look outdoors. Were looking at our
Adventure Aquarium camera and looking at gray skies in philadelphia. Mostly cloudy kind of that haze out there. And future weather keeping those clouds in place, at least in philadelphia. By 3 00, we could see a few showers, maybe a few thunderstorms popping with that daytime heating kind of stirring things up. Where you see the darker shading, thats indicating the heavier downpours. And then were going to wake up tomorrow morning to mostly cloudy skies, the humidity still in place. Still very unstable on monday and that will bring us a chance again for another round of showers and even some gusty thunderstorms again on monday with those heavy downpours. Tuesday, same story. Kind of a repeat today, also monday, and tuesday, before we finally change that pattern on wednesday. Were going to change it in a pretty big way on wednesday. But for today, warm and humid, plan on the chance for some showers and storms. Like yesterday, its not going to be a total washout. I think you can get your outdoor plans in. Keep an eye on our radar and an eye to the sky, as you see those clouds getting grayer and hear the thunder and the lightning. 83 to 86 today, well above normal for this time of year. Typically, we come in in the 70s. Winds out of the west at a 10 to 15
Miles Per Hour, a little gustier with those thunderstorms. Warm today not quite as warm on monday but still kind of the same scenario mostly cloudy those thunderstorms in place to get you back to school and work, 79. By tuesday 80 degrees, mostly cloudy, thunderstorms. On wednesday, thats the difference. Low dew points less humidity. 74, mostly sunny, a little windy. Looking really beautiful thursday, friday and saturday, into the mid70s. A rain delay at
Citizens Bank park could stop the phils from winning their fourth straight game. You watched it right here on nbc 10. Ryan howards double triggered a threerun, third inning against the diamondbacks. Chase utleys rbi double sparked a threerun fifth inning. Jerome williams got his third win. Jonathan papelbon notched his ninth save. The phillies ended up beating arizona, 75. Theyll wrap up their series a little bit later this afternoon. Now heres the rest of your sunday morning sports. Happy sunday morning. Im
