The blue route northbound is still shut down between 76 and conshohocken and this is a lot of that activity that youre seeing out here right now. In the last 15 minutes, really, this van has been hooked up to a tow. Another vehicle involved in this accident and quite a bit of Police Activity out at the scene. Heres what we know right now as far as this accident goes. The accident happened around 2 00 this morning and it is confirmed that one person has died from their injuries and another taken to a local hospital. A twovehicle accident and that van, as i mentioned, is hooked up to the tow. It has been hooked up for the last ten minutes. Its not going anywhere just yet. As a result of this accident, the ramp from 76 to the blue route northbound are blocked off. You can see crews have flairs out there and officials blocking these ramps. No one can access the blue route northbound this morning between 76 and conshohocken. This is a problem for drivers who need to access the northeast extension or pennsylvania turnpike. Tracy . Jillian, 5 02 and an update on breaking news were following out of cape may. A fire is now contained to the engine room. Here is a live look at the boat. Its called delaware. Earlier we told you two workers had escaped the room when the fire began, fire began less than two hours ago. A live report as soon as it gets there. Also new from overnight, one person died in a house fire in delaware county. It happened around midnight at this home in chester. The victim at this point has not been identified and right now its still unclear as to what caused the fire. A subway threat leads to aextra security at septa subways. New questions by alleged plots to attack the u. S. Subway systems in the u. S. And france. U. S. And french authorities went on the alert. Officials later cast doubts on the prime ministers report and this morning they still say they have no credible threats. Nbc 10 Monique Braxton is live with more on the subway theft. Septa isnt taking any chances. Thats right, tracy. Just moments ago, the Regional Rail train pulled out of this fernrock station and we noticed an additional presence of police on it. Look at the video we have for you. We captured some of septa police force. Their 265 police are being reinforced by philadelphia officers. This is part of the increased Police Presence now in place due to an announcement by iraqs prime minister. He says theres an imminent plan to attack american and french subway systems. However, u. S. Officials are telling us no credible information about that threat. Local leaders say there is no evidence our region would be a target. But septa is beefing up patrols with additional boots on the ground. We went out to see whats on the mind of commuters who ride the rails daily. The increased Police Presence. Did you notice any Additional Police riding . Yes. Where were they . Inside the train and on the platform. Your thoughts about that . Always helps to have additional security around for public service. It helps out a lot. Now, riders are also being urged by septa to be vigilant. In a statement amtrak says there are no specific threats against their railroads or trains. They stay they have security measures in place and work closely with federal terrorism agencies. Union nurses are expected back on the job this morning in delaware county. Those nurses went on strike sunday morning. Their strike ended tuesday, but the hospital brought in temporary nurses who are guaranteed at least five days of work, which is why the union nurses wont be back on the job until today. Those nurses and Hospital Management are trying to resolve a contact dispute over pensions and staffing levels. A man conviced of a deadly hit and run in philadelphia will be sentenced. Jerome brooks found guilty of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. Deanna till was hit by brooks suv while she was trying to cross. New information this morning in the trial of a man accused of killing a baby and her grandmother in montgomery county. The parents of the murdered 10monthold girl took the stand yesterday. There was a lot of emoetion as Yandamuri Cross examined the babys mother. He killed the baby and grandmother in a botched kidnapping and ransom attempt back in 2012. The trial is expected to last at least a week. A Lehigh Valley man has filed a lawsuit against police claiming excessive use of force. The cell phone video here that he says backs up his story. This alleged incident happened back in may in allentown. Nbc 10 tracked down the witness who recorded the video. In the video you can see officers take down Christian Ramirez here. In his lawsuit, ramirez claims one officer knees him in the head while the other is holding him down. Juan is the man who recorded the just not right. You know, like he wasnt doing anything for him to be treated like that. Now ramirezs lawyer tells us once the individual is handcuffed he no longer poses a threat to himself or the police officer. They have started an internal investigation, but they have not yet been served with a lawsuit. The manhunt continues this morning in northeast pennsylvania for eric frein. Hes suspected of killing a Pennsylvania State trooper and wounding another. The shooting happened in bloominggrove pike county. Police are covering a wooded area three to fivemile zone. He used a rifle to ambush the state troopers nearly two weeks ago. Nearly 1,000 officers are on the trail of that suspected killer. They describe him as a survivalist who spent months or even years preparing for his retreat into the poconos. You can count on nbc 10 news and nbc10. Com to bring you continuing coverage from the poconos. Two former School Principals are off the job and now facing charges in a cheating scandal. Nbc 10 was in south philadelphia were booked by police and then arraigned. The accuser Barbara Mccreery was principal and Arthur Larry Melton who was in charge at bock Technical High School in south philadelphia. Both principals are accused of changing answers on a state standardized test so their schools would make progress. The investigation began in 2011 when state officials began looking at unlikely results and eras erasetures on state examines. More than 130 staffers have been swept up in that case and seven charged with crimes including the former principal and four former teachers there. 5 08. The Republican Party of pennsylvania will hold its fall meeting this weekend and the governors of pennsylvania and new jersey are both scheduled speakers. Governor Chris Christie is expected to address the crowd tonight. On saturday, governor corbett will speak. Tom wolf is holding a substantial lead for the top spot in pennsylvania. Among registered voters in the state, tom wolf has an advantage of 49 to 31 and wolf has an even larger lead over the governor when it comes to likely voters. Ten minutes after 5 00, following a traffic situation that could impact your morning drive on the blue route where there was a fatal accident this morning. Which has all the northbound lanes shut down. Jillian mele, tell us more. Unclear if the highway is reopened or just some of the stuck traffic getting by because you can see the right lane of traffic is getting by this accident. This is new in the last ten minutes. This is the blue route northbound just past 76. So, the blue route has been closed at 76, but oftentimes when you have a serious accident on a highway, crews will create a closure point and the accident point will be farther away and a lot of vehicles stuck behind that accident have been sitting on the highway. Its unclear as i mentioned if the road itself is opened and well try to work to get that for you. Some traffic, at least, getting by in the right lane. All the activity has been pushed over to these two lanes, as you can see. Even the Police Activity. Tow trucks at the scene and a lot of cleanup that needs to be done. But right now at least some of that traffic is getting by. And when i look at this camera, this is the closure point at 76 to access the blue route northbound. This is still blocked off. So, this is a good indicator that the highway itself could still be closed. But that could be the traffic that has just been sitting out there on the highway since that accident happened. But, again, this is something that well continue to monitor for you. If you need to get around this in the meantime, take 76 eastbound and from there you can take the pennsylvania turn pike eastbound. Tracy . Double the patients. A driver faces charges this morning after smashing into a home and then trying to walk away from the crash. The driver came speeding down old darley road in claymont, new castle county. The car hit the house with such a powerful impact that it tore off a large section of the home. Mcintosh has lived in the house for more than a decade and luckily her 6 and 9 year olds were staying with a friend at the time. Their bunk bed is in the front lawn and they would have probably been in their rooms. In a split second, as fast as you can call, the house was destroyed and the vehicle is laying on the ground. The home has been condemned. Police say the driver was captured a few blocks away and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of a crime. From our south jersey bury now, hospitals are seeing more cases of enter hovirus. It has double the number of pediatric patients this time of year than it did last year. Is that because of the flu or enterovirus . Their symptoms are very similar. Katy zachary eis live with a new development at that hospital. Katy . Theyre taking new measures, because theyre concerned about it. You have to be 16 years old or older to enter the pediatric unit. These viruses are so easily spread. At least four cases have been reported at Childrens Hospital of philadelphia since last week. All this while we are starting to prepare for the flu. The symptoms of both viruses are similar, but they are from different viral families. Doctors say if you come down with one, it does not build immunity to the other. In anticipation of a busy season, doctors and nurses at brinmar hospital have had long conversations with how they need to prepare. We ehad multiple meetings to try to prepare for the surge of patients. Make sure we have the appropriate number of respiratory equipment and appropriate amount of nedications and prepare for increasing staffing. Heres a breakdown youre looking at of enterovirus d68 and the flu. The flu typically lasts a little bit longer and the symptoms are similar and the big difference with the flu is that youre going to experience body aches and, of course, the big concern everyone was talking about with enterovirus no vaccine for the flu. Medical teams are on their way to liberia to help stop the spread of ebola. The centers for Disease Control says one of the Biggest Challenges is getting people out of their homes and into treatment center. People who live in liberia are complaining about a lack of resources at medical centers. An estimated 1,500 more beds are needed to treat the ebola patients there. Meantime, that american doctor that contracted the virus in liberia is back home in massachusetts. He was released from the Nebraska Medical Center yesterday and arrived at the hospital for treatment earlier this month. Hes grateful for the specialized care that helped him recover. And president obama spoke at a United Nations meeting. Today hell address another gathering on world health. The goal is to improve the worlds ability to preevent, detect and respond to the deadly outbreaks. The Fire Department of new york says three retired firefighters who worked at ground zero died on the same day from 9 11 related illnesses. They all died on monday of cancer. The Fire Department says that cancer was brought on by the toxic air at ground zero. The union that represents fdny officers says in the 13 years since 9 11, 850 of their members who were there have gotten sick. The u. S. Government is launching 13 Research Projects to explore drugfree ways to treat military Service Members and veterans who have chronic pain. Researchers will also look at alternative treatments for other conditions like posttraumatic stress disorder, drug abuse and sleep problems. 5 20, a deadly accident that happened overnight is still causing big problems on the blue route. I was able to confirm the blue route northbound has technically been reeopened even though we have lanes restricted in this area. The right lane getting by. This road on the northbound side has been closed since about 2 00 this morning when this accident happened. We confirmed that right lane is open to traffic, but as this continue farther into the morning, well see heavier volume out there. You want to avoid this portion of the blue route. That just happened about three minutes ago. That is an update for you this morning. This is where it was closed off. If you want to avoid this area, take 76 westbound out to the pennsylvania turn pike and you can stay on the turn pike or access the northeast extension. Yesterday at this time we saw rain sweeping across beach avenue and no sign of rain this morning. Winds are at 8 miles an hour in northeast philadelphia but calm conditions in reading has led to the development of fog. But the cloud cover is gone. Its off to the northeast. So, that little bit of fog will disappear with bright sunshine and warming temperatures. Today we will warm into the upper 70s. So, keep an eye out for fog, especially north and west. But rest of the area is looking clearer and looking for sunshine today. A warmer day today and that warming trend continues for the weekend. Tomorrow, we will see 78 degrees warm to 81 with sunny skies. Nice can comfortable for saturday and sunday as the humidity will stay low for both days and another warm day on monday.
