In the heat of summer, forest fires are not uncommon in southern europe, but the massive fire raging in portugal tonight is being called one of the worst in decades. More than 60 lives lost, many of them trapped in their cars as they tried to flee the flames. Several european nations are offering assistance as high winds and high temperatures tonight are making it even more difficult to control the blaze burning northeast of lisbon. We begin with lucy cavanaugh. Reporter a deadly inferno like no other. The wildfires that began spreading across this mountainous region late last night spared nothing in their path. Panic and fear as residents fled the fastmoving flames. Anguish the moment this wok realized she lost everything but her life. More than 60 people killed, nearly half died as they tried to escape, trapped in their cars on a road north of lisbon that was suddenly engulfed by fire. This woman says she was inside her home when it started to burn. The fire was all around us, she says. The firefighters came in to get us because we could hardly breathe. As for the house, it must have burned for sure. As helicopters ferried the injured to hospitals, entire villages were evacuated to safety. The survivors left with nothing. That comes as western states are dealing with dangerously high temperatures, extreme heat gripping areas from Central California over to arizona. Temperatures in some areas expected to climb well over 110 degrees tomorrow. The forecast includes a high of 119 degrees in palm springs and 118 in phoenix. The search for seven missing u. S. Sailors off the coast of japan was called off today. Their bodies were discovered in flooded compartments of the uss fitzgerald that collided with a cargo ship on friday. Many questions remain this evening as the investigation into j that massive collision continues. Janis Mackey Frayer reports tonight from the navy base in japan. Reporter the frantic search for seven missing sailors is now over after divers found their bodies in the flooded sleeping cabins of the destroyer. As to how much warning they had, i dont know. As water flooded in, the crew scrambled to keep the ship from sinking. It took 16 hours to tow the uss fitzgerald back to port here.
