Reporter well, jim, fire investigators are definitely leaning in that direction. They tell us as many as five space heaters were being used by this family and some of them improperly. They also say a blanket perhaps on the first floor caught fire by one of the heaters and it spread upstairs and now two of eight people, a mother and her young son who were simply trying to keep warm while asleep, are dead. Shes in shock. Something that hurts, were in shock right now. Just something that its not real for us right now. Its not. Reporter her cousin, elizabeth perez, was just 29, due to deliver a baby girl next month, she planned to name her yvette. Perez died after going back inside to rescue her 2yearold son nathaniel. Deanna durante was in court for an emotional hearing where the contractor said it was all an accident. Reporter family members of Griffin Campbell dont say anything as they leave the criminal justice center, some reacted inside the courtroom while shouting profanity after a judge handed down a 15 to 30year sentence for the contractor. His lawyer says campbell was not trained to take down the building at 22nd and market streets in june of 2013 and thats why it collapsed, but in asking for a larger sentence, prosecutors say campbell was in it for a money and took risks when he sold the building supports for parts before taking the building down. The drum they were beating that this was an accident makes it sound like it was sort of a oneoff careless mistake, and that wasnt the evidence in this case. Reporter campbell sat hands down, head folded down, cried when his daughter spoke. The 51yearold contractor was the lowest bidder on a project he hoped would propel him into the demolition field. They say campbell and his codefendant are the fall guys for rich and powerful developers in the city. He asked for the forgiveness, he and family members expressed their condolences. This has been an epic tragedy all along, but in terms of, quote, criminal culpability, its an outrage that only two players, the bottom of the economic food chain, bottom of the totem pole, are the only two that the District Attorney sought to obtain. The group claims that it is illegal and unconstitutional to withhold state and Federal School aid during the budget impasse. Just last week Governor Tom Wolf freed up 3. 5 million in emergency funding for state schools and social services. Heres a change on septa when it comes to security, the movements of every septa Police Officer now will be recorded while they are on duty. All 270 septa Police Officers now have body cameras to wear as part of their uniforms. Septas police chief talked about the departments Body Camera Program today and showed how theyve been successful in their pilot program. Each officer will get training on how to use the cameras and will also be responsible for activating it to record any incident. This is going to be very good for the public and for the police. Cameras are going to make good cops great cops and make the rest of them follow the rules. Septa spent nearly 300,000 on the cameras. An airman from our area killed in a suicide bombing in afghanistan was laid to rest today. 30yearold air force Staff Sergeant peter taub graduated from sheltenham high school, the father of a 3yearold girl with another child on the way. He was later found dead in a Lehigh Valley canal. Police believe his death was a tragic accident. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the shooting of former congresswoman gabby giffords. Bells rang out across the state in honor of the victims at the moment of the shooting that left six people dead, 13 others injured, and the gunman, jared lockner opened fire during an event in a supermarket parking lot. Giffords was shot in the head, left with a severe brain injury but has since become a vocal gun control activist. Lockner is serving life without parole.
