Today, parents, teachers, and students picketed outside a Philadelphia Charter School that suddenly closed. Nbc 10 at Education PlusAcademy Cyber Charter school, the ceo of the school blames the state budget impasse for the closing. Teachers were just notified that they arent getting paid for their final three weeks of work. In the middle of the school year, students must find somewhere else to go. Our teachers are not getting paid, our kids are just thrown out from the building, no answers, no nothing. This is the best school that ever happened to me. It feels like heaven here. I had the best principal, best teachers. I love it here. I dont get bullied here. Its like heaven. They want us to put our kids in the Public School system. The Public School system failed our kids. Thats why were here now. Last week the school shut down six of its remaining learning centers. More than 400 students were enrolled at those schools. The son of this man, dr. Kermit goznell, will spend the next one to two years in prison for burglary and aggravated assault charges. He broke into a home last year. During that burglary, the home owner shot him several times. His dad, who we just showed you, is serving life in prison for killing newborn children and at least one adult. Now a jury is seated in the trial of a Delaware Police officer accused of kicking a man in the face while the man was in Police Custody. Police released this 2013 dash cam video of Dover Corporal Thomas Webster kicking dickerson in the face while dickerson was on his hands and knees. He was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken jaw. Websters charge was seconddegree assault. The jury is mostly made up of women, there isnt one black man seated on the bench. Webster has pleaded not guilty. Elsewhere, the man accused of opening fire on a planned Parenthood Office in Colorado Springs made his First Court Appearance today. Reporter appearing before a judge via closed circuit television, robert dear was advised of the initial charge against him. The initial charge against you is murder in the first degree. The penalty for that charge is minimum of life in prison and maximum of death. Reporter dear is accused of killing a Police Officer and two civilians at this planned parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. The rampage set off a fivehour standoff and shootout friday that also left nine others injured. Among the dead, jennifer kharc r markovsky, her father writing, life was too short for my beloved daughter. Iraq veteran kearre stewart, at the clinic with his girlfriend who was pregnant. He stepped outside to make a phone call, was hit by gunfire, then went back inside to warn others. I believe thats his military instinct, i guess, that was his main priority, was to help and save other lives. Reporter and Police Officer garrett swasey, one of the first responders, remembered at the church where he was copastor as kind and selfless. The former champion figure skater was a father of two. Were learning more tonight about a western pennsylvania Police Officer killed in the line of duty. Saint claire township officer lloyd reed was responding to a call saturday night in florence. Today, officers talked about the confrontation between reed and the man charged with killing him, ray shelter jr. Officer reed demanded several times that mr. Shelter put down the firearm, drop the weapon, drop the weapon. Mr. Shelter engaged him in the verbal argument and advanced towards officer reed. At that point in time, there was gunfire exchanged between the two. Officer reed died a short time later. Shelter was hit in the shoulder and ran from the scene. Police found him about six hours later. Hes charged with criminal homicide. A wake for reed will be held thursday. His funeral will be held friday. Jury selection is under way in baltimore. Its the first trial of six Police Officers indicted in the death of freddie gray. Officer William Porter arrived for court this morning. Hes charged with assault, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment. Gray died in Police Custody in april. In the days following grays death, thousands took to the streets of baltimore to protest. The other five officers will be tried separately. In other news, pennsylvania is now five months into a budget impasse, but Governor Tom Wolf tells nbc 10 now hes confident there will be a deal within days. The main Sticking Point here is taxes. A Framework Agreement between the firstterm democratic governor and Republicancontrolled Legislature nearly collapsed. Republicans said increasing the sales tax to plug a budget deficit and cut School Project taxes lacks support. Governor wolf told nbc 10s Jim Rosenfield today the new plan will come together through compromise. This is a democracy. I dont get, just because i said i want it or some people wanted it, you have to negotiate, you have to work with the other folks in harrisburg who have been elected and thats what this budget will be, the result of those negotiations between people of different parties. Nbc 10 has reached out to Republican Leadership for a response to wolfs comments but so far we havent heard back. Pennsylvania attorney general Kathleen Kane is about to name a special prosecutor to lead the investigation inside that porn email saga. A spokesman for kane says shell lay out the duties of this prosecutor and a team of others at a News Conference tomorrow. The Spokesman Says this team will comb through public email accounts after she says lewd and pornographic emails were exchanged between prosecutors and judges. Kane herself faces criminal allegations she leaked materials to a reporter and then lied about it. Pushing for the privilege to drive. A proposed bill in the new Jersey Legislature would allow undocumented immigrants to get a drivers license. Supporters of the bill gathered outside state president Steve Sweeneys office in west deptford today. The group says Public Transportation doesnt allow a person to go everywhere in the state. The proposed bill would only allow undocumented immigrants a license for driving, not for any other purpose. What were asking is that we create a different license, which still has a point system to allow them to only legalize their driving. The spokesman for state Senate PresidentSteve Sweeney says that legislators want to know how the same effort worked in other states with similar programs. A warning from the fbi prompted the university of chicago to cancel classes at its hyde park campus today. They say someone went online to post a threat of gun violence at the campus quad area. Its going to be here tonight, so we will be seeing rain increasing as we go overnight tonight and it will be here for your morning commute tomorrow. Not just tomorrow, but also wednesday. Couple days with rainfall here and to end out the month of november, we are ending with temperatures overall about five degrees or so above normal. And going into the month of december, well still be above normal. 35 right now, though, in mount pocono, 34 allentown, 34 in pottstown, 36 degrees in philadelphia, also bensalem 45, glassboro 48, so its chilly outside, but overnight the temperatures will slowly start to rise with that rain moving in. Take a look at the temperature forecast. Pretty steady here until about after midnight, then a very slow temperature rise until sunrise. Normally the temperature dropping to sunrise, but were in a different pattern with the rain moving this. Its going to get milder, too.
