WCAU NBC10 News At 5pm March 14, 2017

Onstreet parking like this where the snow clearly goes above my ankles. For a lot of people here at reading, theres plenty of digging out to do. Outside the arena it took a bobcat and plow to clear the piled snow, but just around the corner we found mike fuller doing it by hand. Seven years in reading have taught him not to be surprised by late season storms. Once we think its over, february, midjanuary and february, you think its over. March got something for you every time. Reporter for drivers here its been a day of spinouts and digouts. Crystal collins enlisted all three of her kids to help. I have to shovel out my moms car in case of emergencies. Reporter the storm is having a domino effect on this berks county city. 20 snow plow drivers are working 12hour shifts tackling the secondary roads through the afternoon. Trash pickups are delayed by a day and for snow Loving School kids, like francisco and mariana, classes are canceled for the rest of the week. Youre a pretty good older brother. I guess so. Reporter youre out of breath. Yes. Reporter in reading this midmarch storm packed a snowy punch for anyone required to work. So you have to be out in this . Yeah. Reporter or just trying to stay ahead of the accumulation. And theres really good reason to try to stay ahead of that accumulation for people here. Residents are required to dig out fire hydrants and the sidewalks out front of their house 24 hours after the final flake falls. That will be by about 3 30 tomorrow. Well be keeping track to let you know how the digout goes here in reading. Were live in reading. Im george spencer, nbc 10 news. George, glenn hurricane schwartz says more snow is on the way within the hour. The biggest concern for most of the area, temperatures dropping and then refreezing. On the roads, even on the sidewalks like here on broad street, any precipitation could ice over. Nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz and tammie souza here with us. We start with glenn. Whats the situation like now . The temperature is above freezing. This is really the best time to try to get rid of the snow, but its still deceptive because its not that deep. Its heavy. This is heart attack snow. This is the type of snow that you need to use your knees, not your back because this stuff is like wet cement. And do it now rather than when its absolutely frozen. Youll have a block of ice later tonight. Then tomorrow morning, too. So as difficult as its going to be now, it will be that much harder tomorrow and were going to be seeing a little bit more. George will be getting this snow shower pretty soon and its moving straight to the east just about getting into chester county, east nottingham getting it now, coatesville in a little bit. Pottstown will get it soon, too. You can see new london in the path of this. And knocks the visibility down and puts moisture on the roads. It doesnt really accumulate a lot, but it can cause problems. It can cause accidents because theres more moisture on the road as the temperature goes below freezing. Theres the center of the big storm. Now getting towards maine. And the temperature now down to 28 in reading, lancaster. Things are already starting to ice up there. But after sunset, its going to be way worse. 34 in philadelphia. 36 in wildwood. The wind is out of the northwest. So that direction is blowing off shore. So no more high tide flooding at the shore with this storm. Weve got 40mileperhour wind gusts at Dover Air Force base. 36 Atlantic City and toms river we did have gusts over 50 Miles Per Hour in parts of the area. Temperature dropping down into the low 20s in philadelphia and feeling like 8 by tomorrow morning, and thats not the last of the cold weather. Meteorologist tammie souza has more on what to expect. Oh, its awfully fierce. It feels like january, right, glenn . Nothing at all like march. Although i think theres some light at the end of the tunnel by the time we get to the weekend. Right now were dealing with all this snow. Glenns right, you want to get out there and clean it up if you can. If you have time this evening. Pace yourself. We are dealing with a half foot or more of snow. Take a look across all of the counties. This is what has fallen. Malvern picked up 7 inches, royersford picked up 7 1 2 inches, upper darby picked up 6 inches of snow. A substantial amount of snow fairly impressive considering all the sleet that fell and a little bit of ice mixing in with that. We thought these totals might be a little higher but not to be. Heres something that you have to be concerned with, the temperature falling. Weve talked about it. But this is the difference from the same time yesterday. So were 8 degrees colder at the airport in philadelphia. And were going to continue to see the temperature falling, the wind chill is going to get you because its going to feel like the Single Digits at times. You really have to cover all that skin because in as little as 30 minutes you could get frostbite, something quite nasty. We all have to bundle up for sure. Mitch blacher up in skyforce 10 to give us a birdseye view of whats left from the storm. Youre up over the boulevard. Reporter yeah, guy, you want to get a good example of what the meteorologists are talking about as far as the potential for black ice, this snow plow right in front of the proceed you can see theyre not pushing snow right now. Thats water in front of the plow. One of the main things the city has been talking about is as youre clearing your sidewalks and the areas around your house, to make sure to clear your drains so that the storm water can go down those drains. You can see all that water just kind of sliding off of that plow right there. The city of philadelphia at the height of this storm had about 400 of these types of trucks full of salt, about 50,000 tons of salt available. And theyre deploying it all throughout the city. The roads, as you can see, pretty good shape especially the main corridors like columbus boulevard. Guys . Mitch matcher in skyforce 10 for us tonight. Ice forming on trees and branches really causing some headaches for a lot of people all over the region really. Nbc 10 found these power lines down in mt. Laurel. Cydney long traveled through burlington and Camden County today. Shes live in audubon where yet another tree came down. Reporter hey, keith, and this one tree behind us, its a big tree but one of dozens if not hundreds across the region. Take a look. It is split in half. It looks like an l right over here. The side of the tree that fell to the left, that did damage to that home on the left, but the part that fell to the right and into the street, it took down two utility lines, the wires along with it and knocked out power in this area. Trees split in half sitting on homes and blocking roadways, ice coated branches snapped. And in the words of residents, it happened left and right. People might look out the woind and say, oh, this is not a serious storm. This is a serious storm. This is a very serious storm. This is actually more dangerous than if we actually had two feet of snow. Reporter and we saw damage almost everywhere. We hit five towns across two counties. Gloucester wind and rain made it tough for drivers. Very windy and all over the place on the road. Reporter in laurelton, mount laurel crews are fast to open roadways like route 38 where wires laid across the road and in Shopping Center parking lot. This man woke up to trees snapping in his backyard. All these branches are laden with a thick coat of ice. And theyre snapping all over this neighborhood. Were without power. A lot of this town is without power. Reporter until Mother Nature eases up and trees stop falling down, hes enjoying a wintry game of fetch with his lab riley. Residents watched the sparks fly on arcing line. Theyre anxious for power crews to quickly fix lost electricity sooner rather than later. We do have small sections that are without power. Theyre setting up a warming shelter for those people. Reporter as we speak about a thousand residents here in audubon, Camden County, are still without power this afternoon as these families are waiting and watching, these crews working here on walnut street. We could see work like this being done over the next 24 hour. We hung up with the Camden County oem. They got 1500 911 calls for downed power lines and trees. That was as of 3 00 this afternoon. On average Camden County responds to about 180 fire calls a day. Today they got 486. So this work were going to continue to see this probably over the next day or so. Live in audubon tonight, cydney long, nbc 10 news. Working hard tonight. Delaware is also having power problems. The thick ice is really taking its toll on tree branches there as well. Flooding came earlier than expected to Atlantic City. My house is flooded. I live on connecticut. Its flooded. Reporter also 1 1 2 hours before high tide streets in margate began to fill up. Drivers spent a lot of time in reverse as they try to find a way around the submerged spots. Others stopped to get a better look. Some people enjoy the excitement of this type of weather, like myself. Reporter even after the floodwater starts to recede, you can see all the debris thats left right out in the middle of the street all the way down. It was a little worse than we anticipated. We were looking for 6, 6 1 2 feet above low mean water and it came closer to 9 feet. Reporter in north wildwood, the ocean pounded the beach. Homeowners came down to check out the erosion. And back up in Atlantic City, some drivers who did not heed the warnings to move their cars will likely deal with saltwater damage from this storm. Ive heard stories of them having to put money back into their vehicles in flooding repairs. Reporter and ocean city is one of the spots that put a lot of emergency sand here to try to blunt the impact of that erosion, but this is the High Water Mark coming all the way up here to that beach fencing. If you look where the ocean is, its quite a bit of distance. Were live in ocean city. Im drew smith, nbc 10 news. See those waves out there, wow. Nbc 10s coverage of this major storm far from over. You can see how tough it is to get around in some of these areas. But let me take you to a neighborhood a few blocks from here where digging out just got a lot easier. On mead street in Chestnut Hill, the home of the snow blower is a Welcome Change for neighbors who make a habit of helping each other when theres a big snowstorm. Two years ago we had a huge snow, and the whole neighborhood was out. We have a lot of older residents that we helped shovel out. We were out for hours and decided after our backs were killing us that it was time to get a snow blower. Reporter they pitched in to buy it and were all smiles as they gathered to watch its Maiden Voyage down the block. Do you feel like youre investment is paying off . Absolutely. 100 . My back does, too. Reporter theres still shoveling to get the cars out, but with heavy snow like this, it makes a big difference. This is tim woods car. Hes new to the neighborhood. If you have to leave the house, how are roads across the region right now . Francesca ruscio tracking those Road Conditions. A lot of people had off today because of the snow. Now tomorrow morning thats going to be a different story. Take a look at these Road Conditions. A lot of them are mostly wet as of right now. The blue route is pretty shiny because of the wetness at baltimore pike. But the main concern is the ice. Once those temperatures start to drop and we start to see that icy conditions really starting to kick in for tomorrow morning, its going to create hazardous Road Conditions for tomorrow. Route 73 at 38 in maple shade, new jersey, very light cars right now. If you have to be out and about, take it slow and use caution. Back to you guys at the desk. Thats really one of the biggest concerns tonight, the wet roads freezing again, causing those dangerous conditions out there because the temperatures are really going to plummet on us. Lets get an update on what we can expect from glenn hurricane schwartz. Were looking at single digit temperatures at some point, too . Feels like temperatures, yeah, and even close to zero. Were in the middle of march. Its not supposed to get this cold. The average high for the day is 52. Tomorrow we may not hit 30. Here we are in south philly, i95. You can see the sun glistening off the highway and travel is okay, but look at the sky in the distance. It is pitch black. Thats toward the west. Those are those snow showers that i was telling you about and im about to show you, too. North and west with all the snow that fell, the snow and ice refreezing solid. Even some snow blowers may have some trouble with this stuff. The i95 corridor, snow, slush, ice, refreezing rock hard, as you just saw, and at the shore the winds are blowing off shore. You dont have to worry about coastal flooding anymore. 34 philadelphia now, with some sunshine. At least for a while. Some of the western suburbs the clouds have come back. 28 degrees and near freezing elsewhere. So its already pretty cold. Lets take a look in new jersey. And we can see princeton at 31, hopewell township, 30, robbinsville 31. Lumberton, florence at 32, mt. Laurel 31, medford 33 and theyre going down. Nothing to stop it. And it actually gets colder when you have a snow cover and clearing skies. Here we go. Feeling like close to zero, keith, pottstown, westchester, allentown. And thats just by 11 30. It gets now even colder by tomorrow morning. We get up and youre trying to shovel that snow, and its hard and look how cold its going to feel. Its better to do it with this last sunshine of the day than tomorrow morning. Here we go in the afternoon. Its only feeling like 7 or 8 north and west where you got all that snow. And by thursday morning the same story. Only 5, 6 degrees. So this is more than just 24 hours of cold. So were dry in philly now, got the sun out. But look whats coming. We got a little bit of snow just about to hit reading and new morgan, farther to the south its coming into chester county, about to hit west chester, newark, middletown, flurries as well while the main storm is still off in new england.
