Moment. Man, its crazy. Reporter rahami, police say, wasnt willing to go down without a fight. He fired at two Linden Police officers hitting one of them in a bullet proof vest. He was sleeping right across the street from where my truck was parked. Reporter long time linden resident michael heard the gunshots as he left for work. He quickly returned home to his street, swarming with police, local, state, and federal. Well be extending this crime scene all the way back. Reporter authorities spent the day gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. One told cops rahamis beard gave him away. I dont feel safe right now. Reporter despite rahamis capture within 48 hours of the first device going off in seaside park, residents fears are not entirely officer. I dont feel safe. He went from chelsea, new york to seaside and stopped in elizabeth on the way, clearly stopped in linden on the way, who knows wherever else he may have stopped on the way . I know im safe, so im good no matter what. Its definitely a scary scene, anybody could have gotten shot at any time. Reporter this Crime Scene Investigation continues. No word when elizabeth avenue may reopen. Meantime rahami underwent surgery this afternoon. He also remains hospitalized in guarded condition by police. Investigators tell us he will be charged with attempted murder and that both officers who were shot at will make a full recovery. Live in linden, im cydney long, nbc 10 news. Who is Ahmad Khan Rahami . Nbc 10 has quickly learned a lot about how he became a u. S. Citizen and his advertities to middle east. Mitch blacher joins us with more. Mitch, there is some overseas travel. Reporter yes, rahami, its confirmed, was in afghanistan as early as april 2013. From all accounts he has been a lawabiding citizen until now. Born in afghanistan and into question naturalized a u. S. Citizen, Ahmad Khan Rahami sought asylum in the u. S. And got it in 2011. He studied criminal justice at Middlesex County college. Officials said they had no idea he would do what Law Enforcement claims. We directly linked him to bombings in new york and new jersey. Reporter he lived with his family above the familyowned Fried Chicken restaurant. Rahamis father sued the city of elizabeth when the city fined him for staying open past 10 00. Elizabeths mayor was asked about the lawsuit today. The lawsuit and the enforcement measures had nothing to do with beliefs, religion, or anything else. Reporter Police Believe the 28yearold is captured by surveillance cameras in new york saturday, showing what he did. They arent ready to say why. We have no knowledge. But the investigation continues. Reporter right now rahami is in a hospital under 24hour guard. Once he is medically cleared, the fbi will immediately start to question him to compare his answers to the forensic evidence that they continue to collect. For the investigators, im mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. Weve also learned rahami attended Middlesex Community college in edison for two years, from 2010 to 2012. He majored in criminal justice but did not graduate. Fbi agents found bomb making materials inside the suspects family home in elizabeth. That happened overnight, not long after a bomb went off as authorities tempted to disarm it near the train station in elizabeth. Jersey shore reporter Ted Greenberg has been covering the bombing since saturday morning. He joins us live with what the suspects father had to say a short time ago. Reporter jim and jackie, he says he did not know what his son was allegedly up to. Tonight from others in this community, there is disbelief and fear. Did you know your son was doing this . No. Reporter you had no idea . No. Reporter Mohammed Rahami says he had no prior knowledge that his son Ahmad Khan Rahami was behind the bombings in new jersey and new york as authorities allege. When you hear now that hes been accused of this, do you believe it . Do you believe it . Sir . Im not sure whats going on. Reporter youre not sure . Im not sure whats happened exactly. But i think so. Its very hard right now to talk, okay . Reporter investigators seized cars and came out of rahamis elizabeth apartment with boxes of potential evidence, a startling scene for people who live and work in this north jersey community. Terrified. He was hiding in plain sight. Reporter rahami shares the apartment with his father and other relatives upstairs from his familys Fried Chicken restaurant. They seemed friendly. They didnt seem like no harm would come from them, you know . Its crazy. I would have never expected that. Reporter that explosion came hours earlier from one of five pipe bombs found in a trash can at the nearby elizabeth train station. It blew up as a robot tried to disarm it. No one was hurt. Its a little scary, right in our backyard. Reporter Authorities Say the bombs were similar to those found following an explosion saturday in seaside park. Investigators have linked rahami to that blast along with the bombing saturday night in new york city. Were like a family here, in a great city. To know that evil was across the street, thats pretty scary and pretty bad. Reporter at this point, rahami has not been publicly linked with the bombs found at the train station. It is shrinking, that area. The rain is not as heavy as it was earlier this afternoon. And you can see the wider picture, plenty of clouds, and theyre not going anywhere. The rain, pretty impressive, over three inches, cape may point, cape may courthouse. North wildwood, close to four inches of rain. Dennis township, close to three. Long beach island, 4 1 2 inches. Brant beach and love ladies, close to four inches of rain. Well see some more patches of mainly light rain or some showers during the night. Again, especially delaware and south jersey. Authorities say evidence links him to the bombings in seaside heights, new jersey, and manhattan. Weve just learned from federal investigators that cellphones on the bomb devices were purchased last year from the same Family Dollar store in perth amboy, new jersey. Now to another major story over the weekend, a shooting rampage in West Philadelphia that left six people shot, including two police officers. Tonight the nbc 10 version now know what the suspect said in his note he left behind before he was shot and killed. Nicholas glenn referred to himself in the third person, he called him solo tattoo tears. He was upset with police and called out his probation officer. Nbc 10 uncovered Surveillance Video that shows glenn walking calmly after one of the shootings. Investigative reporter George Spencer has details. Watch crossfire reporter today we discovered the shooting suspect, nicholas glenn, had been to jail at least once a year all of his adult life. Eight different times since 2009, mostly for Crimes Involving possession and distribution of marijuana or crack cocaine or violations of parole. You guys were raised like brother and sister. Yes. Reporter glenns cousin tells us her mother raised the shooting suspect for much of his childhood as glenns own mother struggled with addiction. During the suspects latest stays in philadelphia prisons, he had several fighting violations, so supervisors say he was sent to, quote, punitive seg rr rregation three times. Glenns criminal history may date back years. We discovered many of his alleged crimes were concentrated geographicall geographically, many of them within blocks of friday nights ram pain. In 2009, he assaulted a relative in the 5500 block of locaust. In 2011, a drug arrest in south fraser and another in the 5500 block of sansom. The next year, another drug arrest on that exact same belong. By april of this year, glenns supervised probation was extended yet again, with an order that glenn receive a Mental Health evaluation. He was a very loving, caring, familyoriented guy. I didnt expect this to come from him. Reporter reporting in West Philadelphia, George Spencer, nbc 10 news. Sergeant sylvia young was ambushed and the first person targeted in the shooting spree. Shes expected to be released from the hospital soon. Meanwhile injured university of pennsylvania officer Edward Miller is back home after getting released sunday morning. Well hear from him tonight at 11 00. We only know the names of one of the other three victims. Sara salih was shot and killed while in her car with her boyfriend. He was also shot along with a bartender and a bar manager at a nearby club. They are all in the hospital. And breaking news right now, we want to go back to the bombing in new york and new jersey. Just a moment ago, a senior u. S. Intelligence official confirms this picture is the bombing suspect, Ahmad Khan Rahami, in afghanistan. He is the man on the right. Well, as expected, we got a lot of rain this morning. Most of it has moved out. A lot of clouds still left, and were going to see a lot of those clouds tomorrow. But not as much rain. You can see some of the last of it in southern delaware, Cape May County still getting some rain, but not nearly as heavy as it was a few hours ago. And you can see generally drier air coming in west to east. Its very, very slow. Its going to take a while before things really dry out. A little over an inch of rain at the airport, over two inches at graduate hospital. Manayu manayunk, close to two. Andorra, close to two inches of rain. So we needed it. It moves out. And then its dry again. So we had the rain on the 1st, then nothing until today. And we may have nothing again all the way through sunday. We could end up with a whole month of september with like one or two more days of rain. And now we see the futurecast, just a little bit of light rain later on tonight and into tomorrow morning. We just cant get rid of it. Some of this is tropical in nature. Southern delaware and extreme south jersey most likely to get it, most likely places to get sunshine, the lehigh valley. Its going to take a while for many parts of the area to wait until wednesday to see substantial sunshine. The rain chances in philadelphia area, extremely low. Dover has a decent chance tomorrow. Atlantic city has a fairly high chance. But reading, forget about it. We wont be seeing rain the rest of the week. Well see variations across the neighborhoods during the day tomorrow. Clouds across the philadelphia region, a little bit of sunshine perhaps in schwenksville tomorrow afternoon, pushing temperatures up a little over 80. And a lot more sunshine in easton and allentown. Look at these temperatures, getting into the mid80s. This is what neighborhood weather is all about here. Big differences tomorrow. Longport, only 74 degrees. 73 with rain in avalon. Rehoboth beach, rain with thunderstorms and 78 degrees. Well be seeing the temperatures jump up as soon as the sun starts coming out. In most cases that is on wednesday. But the farther north and west you are, the quicker the sun comes out. Were talking about tomorrow. But the jersey shore could still see rain tuesday and wednesday. So it will be a different kind of week depending on where you are. Theres the temperature jump. It stays warm through saturday. We cool down big time on sunday.
