Showed up to clean up the aging cemetery. Well be back with insight from local lawmakers about what theyre expecting to hear from the president tonight. But first were tracking rain back in philadelphia. Its already raining here in the Nations Capital. Sending it back to jackie london in our studios. Well see you soon. A live look at the wilton skyline. The rain is hitting New Castle County right now. You can see the rain moving into our region with this live look at our first alert radar. Meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz tells us how long the rain will last in his most accurate first alert neighborhood forecast. This area of rain has nothing to do with the Severe Weather were talking about for tomorrow. This is a separate area. You can see its really knocked down the visible out there. Some of this rain is on the heavy side, not just where jim is in washington. Look at this. In parts of Chester County, delaware county, south philly, center city getting some moderate to heavy rain right now. Now, this is not going to last all night, but as you can see its moving straight west to east. And so the same areas are getting hit by the heaviest rain over and over again. So youre going to be getting a good bit of rain in philadelphia and much of delaware. In the Lehigh Valley, youre getting nothing. Back to the west, you can see theres more rain coming in ohio. Maybe the Lehigh Valley will get a little bit of that later on tonight. As we go through the night tonight, you can see the future weather computer showing the heaviest rain in central and southern delaware. Extreme south jersey. But it also is moving out of here around midnight or shortly after midnight. And so were not talking about anything lasting all night. Temperatures are extremely mild for this time of the year. We tied some records during the day today. Well break some records tomorrow along with the greater threat for severe storms. Well get the timing on that in the neighborhoods coming up in just a few minutes. Back here in washington, at 9 10 the president will start his primetime speech. Hell lay out his plan for his first year in the white house. And as we mentioned a minute ago, the president will address the spike in hate crimes or hate we should say against the jewish community, yet to be determined to be hate crimes. Those attacks in our area and across the country. And now were getting more insight into what else he may say tonight. Lauren mayk joining me here in washington. Youve been talking to our local lawmakers about what they want to hear. What are they telling you . Reporter jim, largely looking for two things. The first, details on some specific issues, democrats in particular telling me they want to hear about infrastructure and jobs, things that they may be able to get behind. And on the other one, well, those republicans and democrats are looking for tone this evening. Theyre hoping the president says something that will bring people together. When he enters the house chamber, President Trump will speak to a divided audience, at home and in the seats right in front of him. What do you want to hear . Look, i want to hear him moderate and talk to all of america, not just a thin sort of sliver of folks. Hes the president now. Reporter as President Donald Trump setting priorities for his first budget, something democratic senator cory booker is raising concerns about. Im worried about the things were hearing already. Massive slashing to spending in all areas multiple billion dollar increase in military spending. Reporter cuts in other areas expected as the president looks to boost defense spending by 54 billion. Would you like to find a way to be able to do both . Ive gone all over the planet earth talking to our military leaders. Clearly we need to do a lot of things. The wisdom i hear often from folks is that were spending a lot more and were getting a lot less capabilities for what were spending. Reporter republican congressman Tom Macarthur has a new jersey base in his district and supports the plan to increase that spending. Im keenly aware of the 40,000 men and women that serve at that base. They can be sent overseas at any time. If theyre not trained enough, if they dont have the best equipment, thats putting our young men and women in harms way. To me thats unconshun ashl. Reporter today he says hes looking for the president to talk about bringing the country together. You know your colleagues. So what could he say that would resonate with both sides of the aisle . For me its just as simple as acknowledging it takes all of us. Reporter listening for the words said tonight but also we are expecting some symbolism in the gaps that lawmakers are bringing and even in what theyre wearing tonight. Heres another one we learned about late this afternoon. I have been told that these buttons are being distributed to some democratic lawmakers in the capital for those who want to symbolize Unanswered Questions for the white house. Live in washington, d. C. , im lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. Lauren mayk, thank you. We asked voters in rural berks county about what they expect to hear from the president tonight. What he needs to say is that what hes doing, everything hes doing is for the good of the country. I think that he has shown the type of person that he is and what he believes in. And at the end of the day if you dont agree with that, then to him youre wrong. One diner told us shes hoping to hear mr. Trump speak from his heart tonight. As we wrap up our monthlong celebration of black History Month tonight, we are highlighting a group of young people who are perfecting the lost art of oration. Live in Burlington County where theyre the best in the state at public speaking. What does it do to a child to grow up and know that they cant simply be a child . And people are really colored, they must be more than black or white. No man these young people have something to say. Meet the new jersey orators. My category is dramatic interpretation of poetry. Every week for an hour, second graders through High Schoolers perfect the lost art of oration. Theyre memorizing speeches, poems, many of them quite long. And theyre doing it on their own time. When i first came i sat in the corner without really talking, very nervous to stand up in public and speak. Now im that kid in the front row wanting to speak. It help mees me with my read always keeping a watchful eye in the back of to room is joyce payne. She started this chapter. The need for youngsters to be able to stand in front of any type of audience and present themselves has always been something paramount in my mind. Some december the group became state champions, a huge win in and of itself, that payne says the real payoff is in the classroom. The children are not quite aware of what is happening, with you they know theyre talking more in school and its reflected in their work as well. A confidence that keeps these students coming back to speak from the heart and send a message. In Burlington County, erin coleman, nbc 10 news. I have a feeling one day many of them will be on a much bigger stage, maybe even sitting right here. Very good. Tally me banana at universal Creighton Charter School Children performed a musical titled black lives matter. They sang and danced that highlights black americans and their role in history. Turning to our weather now and a rainy night in our area. Heres a live look at broad street from our campus camera. You can see the rain is coming ahead of strong thunderstorms tomorrow. Nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is tracking those storms today with the most accurate forecast. Those are totally separate from what were going to be getting tomorrow, but these are not trivial. This is some significant rain, as you can see moving west to east across the area, some of it is on the heavier side as we take a look close in philadelphia and delaware counties. The oranges indicate some fairly heavy rain and were seeing much of delaware county, upper darby, chester, haverford all getting some moderate to heavy rain, even in the city of philadelphia itself were starting to see some of that heavier rain Near Center City and south philly, just getting into the cross creek park way area and yeah, you got at least a couple hours of some pretty significant rain on the way because theres more back there in ohio that has to move through as well. So were not done with that. Temperatures are in the 60s and 50s and much of the area. Were not done with the warm weather. Weve got one more day of it and even record breaking temperatures. Higher than what you see here. 61 at the airport. 65 in bustleton and in parkwood, it will cool off a little bit as the rain comes in. But tomorrows rain, thats a different story. That comes with thunderstorms. Damaging winds possible. Hail and frequent lightning. The winds higher up in the atmosphere are very strong tomorrow and Even Stronger than what we saw on saturday. So its got a lot of potential. As we go through the night tonight, theres that Southern Area moving through in the next few hours. Then we start the day off tomorrow dry. We could see some showers first thing. But this is the line of storms were talking about later on during the afternoon coming straight through the area. Just about everybody gets it. And it is going to be on the heavy side, 2 00 to 4 00 p. M. , reading, pottstown, allentown, holland, king of prussia, abington, philadelphia, aston, wilmington, newark, and 5 00 to 7 00 p. M.
