Today a philadelphia judge will hear the first of 300 resentencing case involving juveniles punished with life in prison without parole. In january, the u. S. Supreme court extended a ruling from years ago that said sentencing juveniles to life without parole was unconstitutional. Januarys ruling said that decision must ab plied retroactively which means those people in prison must be given a chance to be resentenced. The ruling applies to some 1,000 inmates across the country, including 300 in philadelphia. I talked yesterday with District Attorney seth williams. He told me the resentencing process is not an instant one. A lot of different parties all working very hard together to ensure that we get this right. Philadelphia has more individuals that need to be resentenced as a result of this than any other city in america. Important, tracy, for your viewersc to know, 50 of them were convicted in the 80s and earlier. Williams told me it could take up to three years to review all cases and give all 300 prisoners a resentencing hearing. As Philadelphia Police continue to search for a hit enrun driver who killed a teenager, the victims father is talking about the final moments he spent with his son before his death. Police say the driver of a stolen car hit 18yearold Kevin Maldonado on wednesday night in old york road and luzerne street and then took off. Kevins father said he told his dad to give hem a kiss an a blessing. Surveillance cameras show him catching a ride with his girlfrie girlfriends father when he was impacted by a toyota prius. He told me, dont go, i love your daughter. Police are looking for a person of interest who they say is a woman about 250 pounds with long hair, possibly a wig. If you have any information, call police. The federal corruption trial of congressman chaka fattah continues today. His finances came to the forefront in court yesterday. Prosecutors say codefendant Herbert Vederman wrote checks to fattahs son days before cash was deposited into the congressmans account. That money was used to pay the congressmans philadelphia wage tax, they say. They also say vederman bought a porsche from the fattah family that he never picked up. Prosecutors say they used that money to help pay for a Vacation Home in the poconos. At least six Service Members died on u. S. Soil yesterday. Those deaths happened in accidents in two different states with a third accident destroying an air force jet. At least five soldiers died after an army truck overturned in the creek at ft. Hood, texas. Search crews recovered the bodies from the floodwaters near that vehicle. Three other soldiers. Theyre in stable condition. Four soldiers are still missing. In nashville, tennessee, a pilot was killed yesterday when his blue angel jet crashed during a practice session. It went down near an airport where an air show is scheduled this weekend. Authorities dont know yet what caused that crash. In colorado springs, meantime, an f16 jet crashed at the air force Academy Commencement share money which was attended by president obama. No one was hurt. In this case, the pilot is a member of the thunderbirds flying team. He safely ejected. The president after learning about what happened met with the pilot shortly after the incident to the thank him for his service. Engine failure likely caused that crash. Muhammad ali is in a hospital this morning. Hes being treated for a respiratory issue. Hes in fair condition. Ali is 74 years old and suffers from parkinsons disease. The spokesperson says hes not expected to be in the hospital very long. Philadelphia Police Station want you to take a look at this surveillance video. They say this is a tire slashing suspect caught in the act. And its not really easy to see. The man leans over briefly as he walks past vehicles. Police say thats when he punctured the tires. In effect, septas broad street line was suspended. Earlier it was northbound and Southbound Service. That was both suspends because of this. Now Southbound Service has resumed. Now the Northbound Service is still suspended until further notice because of that power outage. The family of a backhoe operator killed in a train crash in Delaware County two months ago is suing amtrak. Lawyers filed a negligence lawsuit on behalf of joe carters family. An amtrak train struck and killed carter and another rail worker in april. The train was going 106 miles an hour. Carter and his coworker were on the tracks when it hit their backhoe. The train derailed and dozens of passengers were hurt. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The victims lawyers call it a colossal miscommunication. Police say a socalled kill list made by the suspect in the murder suicide at ucla has led them to another dead body. Authorities say he shot and killed his former professor wednesday, then killed himself. Authorities say he drove to l. A. From minnesota. A search of his apartment turned up a kill list which included the name of his estranged wife. Police later found her body. Shed been shot several times. A second ucla professor also named on kill list is okay. Temple University Tested its response to an active shooter situation yesterday. The sirens signaled the start of an Emergency Preparedness exercise at a temple dorm. University police stormed the dorm as they search for a mock gunman, they came across victims, in this case actors, in need of their help. If Something Like this were to happen at temple, the impact is so high, we have to plan for the worst case scenario. There are storms in western pennsylvania that are the possibility later this morning and this afternoon. Then we get a break. Look at the ohio valley. Starting to dry out. Thats saturday. Come sunday, eye system to the north, another one to the south will come together. The moisture from the south getting dragged into the Northern Areas by this easterly progressing system that is going to bring us rain and possibly some thunderstorms for sunday. Saturday, mainly dry but look at the storms coming up from the southwest as we go into sunday morning. Well start off with light showers. We could see heavier storms during the day on sunday. There was an accident on the boulevard around 7th street that knocked out some power lines which caused almost a domino effect now because of that, we were seeing suspension for the broad street line. Both northbound and Southbound Service was suspend earlier. Now just within the last few moments we have word that the broad street line north and Southbound Service has resumed so that is back in service for you. Still expect residual delays there. There will be some because of this as everything gets back under control.
