A chance of scattered showers, and the chance will be around through the day. The better chance will come late this afternoon or this evening. We could see showers and possibly thunderstorms. Police say a masked robber shot a clerk at this Convenience Store on torresdale avenue. One robber demanded money from a register. The clerk complied but was shot when he couldnt open a second register. The robbers took off. Medics took the clerk to the hospital where hes in stable condition. Police are talking to a person of interest. Pamela osborne just got to the scene. Well have a live report coming up. 5 33. Well look on the our top stories today in atlantic county, a judge is expected to make a ruling in the April Kauffman murder case. The radio host and veterans advocate was found shot to death in her lynnwood home in 2012. At a hearing last week, the county prosecutor asked the judge for a dna sample from kauffmans husband, dr. James kauffman. To bucks county. Jury selection in the lee kaplan Sexual Assault trial is scheduled to begin today. Kaplan is accused of attacking six girls from the same family at his home in feasterville. Prosecutors say he fathered two children with one of the girls who police say were gifted to him by their parents. Court records show kaplans lawyer filed paperwork that would allow him to use an insanity defense. Today, Governor Carney will sign a law that expands access to Drug Treatment Centers and cracks down on how opioids are prescribed by doctors. It will allow the department of justice to step in and assist people denied treatment in programs. And a man under arrest after passing out free samples of heroin to people on the street. Philadelphia Police Arrested a 31yearold man for the death of a 6weekold baby. Police were called to the homoon willis avenue last week. The baby was taken to the hospital with a bloody nose. The baby later died. The death was initially ruled suspicious. Homicides detectives say the cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries. Today in north philadelphia, red cross volunteers will be going door to door handing out smoke detectors in a neighborhood still reeling from a fire that killed two children and their grandmother. Memories and charred photos are all the family has left. 7yearold dean. He along with 9yearold prudence and their grandmother were killed when flames gutted their row home on north 6th street sunday morning. The family members said they are confident the fire was not an accident. Were thinking it was intentionally because the flames were too intense for it to be like a cigarette being left out or you know. The fire marshal is still looking into the cause of the fire. Remington peters of colorado was a member of the elite team that was jumping over the park sunday. The navy said peter parachute failed to open. He plunged into new york harbor. The yellow parachute floated down on to a parking lot. Peters and his jump team were demonstrating their skills during a fleet week celebration. Now for a look at stories happening today philadelphias rocky statue will be knocked out of the public view. Nbc10 at the art museum this morning. Starting today it will be closed for two weeks for renovation work. The rocky statue is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. The city officials are thanking everyone for their patience and cooperation during the renovation project. Roman Catholic High School is expanding. The school will celebrate the groundbreaking of the Howard Center for the arts. The new building will eventually house choral and ceramic studios along with space for drama, computer design, and photography classrooms. Construction ginsz begins this summer. It should open next spring. Philly goes robotic. 400 students will learn how to design, program, and build robots at the seventh annual philly robotics expo. Heres what we know now. Two men walked into the 7eleven store, both of them were Wearing Masks. One of the men told the clerk to open the register, and he did. He handed over the money that was inside of the register. Thats when the suspect demanded the clerk open a second register and hand over that money, as well. When the clerk wasnt able to do that, the suspect shot him in the shoulder and took off on foot. Police do have one person in custody. They are only calling him a person of interest. They do not believe that he was the shooter. They are going to be transporting him to the hospital so that the victim can take a look at him. The store, as you see as we come out live, is closed right now as police try to track down the shooter who was wearing a partial mask. That clerk, by the way, is in stable condition at area torresdale hospital. Well follow the story and bring you information in a live report later in this newscast. Unit barged into their home only to find out it was the wrong house. Sonia valpaisdaniels showed nbc10 where she says the officers mistakenly broke down her door last wednesday. She told us the officers used a flash bomb in their kitchen before realized it was the wrong home. The family shared pictures of the damage left behind. Her son says she now has she had high Blood Pressure because of the terrifying situation, and theyre considering legal act n action. Police coming with the guns, push me and her to the floor. Officials found the makeshift memorial when they got to work yesterday morning. They say the giraffe named ernie injured his neck last night after becoming overly aggressive.
