WCAU NBC10 News Today At 5am February 5, 2016

Ahead of yourself. When it gets really heavy, thats when the visibility gets reduced. Thats when we end up with the snow cause something problems, especially on surfaces that are not traveled. Its definitely going to accumulate on grassy surfaces, definitely going to accumulate on trees. Its going to be a little bit scary at times, because these are big flakes that are going to be falling. Its actually going to get heavier over the next couple of hours. So its the temperature and visibility that are critical this morning. Thats what were going to be watching during the next several hours. As you can see, the traffic moving, i95 at least is just wet. And the farther you can see those lights, the better the visibility, the more likely that snow is to just keep melting. Bill henley has more on what to expect coming up in the next few hours. Yes, well be watching this one for the next few hours. Thats when were going to see this snowfall intensify in wilmington and philadelphia and trenton. Much lighter to the north and west. As glenn mentioned, the heaviest snow will be in portions of delaware and south jersey where it is changing over to snow. Look at the snow as it now moves across cape may county. Still a pocket of warmer air in the atmosphere in the Atlantic City area. 35 degrees in philadelphia. Above freezing. Holding steady in doylestown at 32 degrees. Youll notice accumulation there first on some of the grassy surfaces and some of the harder surfaces such as cars that have been out overnight. Logan township, Harrison Township in Gloucester County are a degree above freezing. Well see accumulation here on the grassy surfaces this morning and its going to be, well, right at freezing right now in washington township. The temperatures are coming down. This is expected. Heres what you can expect as the morning goes on at 5 00 this morning from salem, glassboro, tabernacle, temperatures are near freezing. That is snow coming down. The roadways will still be on the warm side. That is going to limit accumulation on the roads. 6 15 this morning, the snowfall intensifies and the temperature gets just a bit colder. That is borderline. Well start to see accumulation on some of the secondary roads and the sidewalks. At 7 45, we can see in salem, it is starting to lighten up a little bit. A good snowfall is coming down into tabernacle. A snowy scene this morning and at the shore, this is where we can expect to see the heaviest snowfall. By noontime its going to be moving out. This is a storm well be watching through the morning. Well go through the future cast hour by hour to show you exactly what to expect and when it will be coming to an end in your neighborhood when im back in just a few minutes. Right now, Jessica Boyington has a look at first alert traffic. Were watching route 1 in new jersey, west win sore at quaker bridge road. Snow falling in these cameras. It is starting to accumulate over on the median as well and in the center. The cars moving through, it looks a little bit shiny. Potentially slipy as well. The roadways are wet and not necessarily accumulating tons of snow. Thats pretty much over into the shoulders right now. It doesnt change the fact that everything is slippery, which is now resulting in speed restrictions. New jersey turnpike, 45 Miles Per Hour almost the entire stretch between the delaware memorial bridge, exit 12 all the way in rahway. Again, down to 45 Miles Per Hour. Seeing the slowdowns even without the speed restrictions. The schuylkill expressway around girard avenue, you can see flickering right there. Thats where the snow is falling here. Speeds are in the 50s, the blue route to the schuylkill expressway. Were still moving along even with these slippier and wet conditions. Ill be back in the next ten minutes with a check on the area bridges and speed restrictions there. Tracy . With the winter storm impacting our region, make sure you sign up for the nbc 10 School Closing a letters. We do not have any School Closings or delays right now. This is a good reminder to do it for yourself, logon to nbc10. Com. Put your School Information in. c well send a text or email, whichever you want, as soon as your Childs School is delay or closed. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live in university city. I believe the first amtrak train pulled out a few minutes ago. Yes, it did. Here at 30th street station, no reported delays or cancellations because of the weather. Septa checked in with them not long ago. Theyre warning their riders to be careful and use caution when boarding trains, buses and trolleys because of slippery conditions likely. Speaking of slippery conditions, ill tell you what weve experienced. The snow here outside 30th street station in the philadelphia area has changed over from the big, lighter flakes to smaller flakes that are a more driving and sleetlike consistency. Not sticking to the roadways, which is good. Still, the roads are pretty slick. Well swing it around, showing you the schuylkill expressway right now. Traffic is moving definitely slower than it was even a half hour ago. Drivers are aware of the conditions. Were seeing a number of plows pile on to 76 and other interstates. Theyre poised and ready to lay salt when the snow does start sticking. Right now it is too wet. It would wash that salt away. I reached out to penndot and im waiting to hear back on what they will be doing differently because of the time of this storm, the morning rush, when people are headed to work or school if the schools arent delayed. Well stay on top of mass transit as well as roads and let you know how the conditions are changing, coming up in a little bit. Reporting live outside 30th street station, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. The snow has been coming down there. The last time we checked at the shore it was just rain. The heaviest snow will be at the jersey shore region when this is all said and done this morning. Nbc 10s matt delucia live in Atlantic City for us this morning. Whats happening right now, matt . Reporter well, vai and tr y tracy, within the last 30 minutes weve grn to see the changeover from rain. It was steady at one point. Were starting to see more sleet falling, that kind of precipitation that bounces off your wind shield and the ground. We are starting to see it stick a little bit here on the boardwalk. It is slippery if you dont watch your footing. This, again, just happened werent past 30 minutes or so. We have been talking about how were expecting the greatest amounts of snow to happen here at the shore. Were still waiting for some of that snow, that actual snowfall to come down here. We have seen different parts of the shore start to get some of the snow precipitation. Here on the boardwalk its really not too bad. You see some of the flags over here at this mini golf course. Weve seenc them blow lightly. Theres a light breeze out here as well. Overall, nothing compared to what we saw out here a couple weeks ago during that blizzard. I just talked with a gentleman out here when we were talking about the ground transportation. Not too many cars on the road. One of those guys who pushes the carts around here on the boardwalk to get you from one casino to the other. I talked to him about how hell handle the day. Take a listen. I think its 2 inches, 3 inches, they plow constantly with salt and everything. It will give us a path to walk down. But its okay. We have seen a couple of the plow trucks make their way up the boardwalk here. Nothing to plow out here right now. They are patrolling the area so when we start seeing accumulation of snow on the boardwalk, thats when well start seeing the plows come out and salt. There are a few people walking on the boardwalk at this hour, if you can believe it. At this point, the roads do not look too bad. We did slide a little bit on the Atlantic City expressway. We have not seen the hard precipitation in the form of snow. Well stay out here, keep an eye on conditions and give you an update in the next half hour. Matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Thank you. Now your first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. It started with rain. They werent able to treat the roads. Now its changed over to snow. The visibility is still tolerable, compared to most snowstorms that we get around here. And as you can see, on i95, you can see, and that is very helpful. The radar shows how heavy the snow is, the rain snow line has pretty much moved offshore. Everybody is now into the snow and then the darker the blue is, the heavier the snow. So you see a little bit darker blues in chester conte and parts of Montgomery County and Gloucester County, near mt. Laurel a little bit. Thats nowhere near as heavy as its going to be over the next couple of hours. This is more of a light to moderate snow so far. Southern delaware, cape may county, Atlantic City, right where matt was just minutes ago changed over to snow. Now, of course, were watching this part of the area, especially closely from ocean county down toward atlanticc county, cape may county. These areas may see the greatest amount of snow by the time the morning is over. Obviously it just started here. We dont see any kind of back edge to this system yet. We have a number of hours left. The visibility is, of course, critical. The lower the visibility, the heavier the snow. The visibility has to get down to a half mile or even less before we would officially consider it heavy snow. Pottstown, quakertown, allentown, doylestown, coatesville, visibility is over two miles. That would be considered light snow. Northeast philly, philadelphia international, wrightstown, two miles or greater, mt. Holly getting close to a mile. You can see onemile visibilities in millville and wilmington. So thats where the heaviest snow is falling now. But its still yet to become heavy. Over the next couple of hours, it should intensify. Look at the temperatures. We were in the 60s a couple days ago. 50s yesterday. The temperature staying above the freezing mark means the snow basically melts on most surfaces, especially the roads, the welltraveled roads. Wrightstown, kennett square, chester springs, wilmington, washington township, all right at 32 degrees. As long as it doesnt cool down too much, remember were not that far from the sunrise, just a couple of hours. As that snow starts to move to the east, its going to get lighter again and that will allow the snow to melt even more. Glenn, thanks. 12 minutes past 5 00. Weve been saying it all morning, what makes this especially challenging is the timing, right going into the rush hour. Not so much the snow. Right now its the visibility. Lets check in with jessica and see how it look on 422. 422, right around route 23. These cameras are hard to see, not a lot of streetlights in this area as well. Its covered in rain water. Most of the majors are doing okay in terms of volume. Were not seeing a lot of the volume yet. We usually start to see that around the 6 30 hour or so. Here is route 47 southbound around dennis township at 347. Not a lot of snow accumulating on the roadways there. Its heavier than it was earlier this morning. If youre following on twitter, delawa delawaredot, the speed limit is being lowered to 55 Miles Per Hour due to weather. More updates of the lowered speeds when i come back. Tracy . Lets show you more live pictures so youc know what youe facing as you head out the door today. Roads for the most part just wet. Temperatures are dropping. Visibility reduced. We just got our first School Closing, Providence Creek Academy Charter School Closed today. Well keep you updated all morning long as we track the winter storm across many parts of our region. Right now were tracking winter storm in our area. Heres a live look at the midcounty tolls at 5 16. We have issued a first alert this morning as were dealing with wet, snowy conditions during rush hour. The biggest problem right now is the reduced visibility for many drivers. Well keep you updated all morning long right here on nbc 10 and on our nbc 10 app. Cydney long is in evesham township right now. How are the roads there, cydney . So far, so good. The snow has definitely picked up since we arrived here at 3 00 this morning. I want to be careful stepping down the grassy surfaces. That is where it is sticking. The roadway, you can see we dont have the freezing temperatures. It is still water, not freezing to the roadway here. We want to show you this video we took within the last 20 minutes or so. The major roadways were not pretreated because of the rain, they are being treated as we speak. Weve seen several d. O. T. Salt trucks moving through, putting down that layer between the road and your tires. Just as the snow begins to increase and pile up, so too will the morning rush hour traffic. This is a concern. Visibility is pretty good. So far, there are limited travel restrictions, limited to the new jersey turnpike and the garden state parkway. More in the northbound area of the state. Again, while it is not sticking to the roads, you will see this little slush, a little bit of slush out here sticking to the sidewalks. If the kids do have school this morning theyll want to have boots on. Also you can see it is sticking here to the mulch and the grassy surfaces. We showed you this car in the wawa parking lot. Thats an employee. There wasnt any snow when we arrived here this morning but you can see that suv, light blue there. It will be completely white in no time. This is what youll be in store for as you bundle up and head out for this very messy morning. Now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. We saw the rain start late last night in some places, change to snow. Just about everywhere right now. And now its a matter of watching the temperatures and the visibilities to see just how messy things are going to be. Is going down somewhat. We can still see the lights in the distance as we look at i95. This is outside our studio in bala cynwyd. You can see some of the buildings across the street. Thats helpful. The visibility is lower now than it was just a few minutes ago. You can see some of the whiteness on the ground. It definitely is accumulating on the grassy surfaces. The wider view of the radar shows that the entire area is seeing snow right now. The darker blues indicating somewhat heavier snow. Theres one band as you san see going through parts of Delaware County, up through king of prussia up into the pennsylvania turnpike and up into bucks county, another band east of the jersey turnpike in Gloucester County, Camden County and into portions of burlington county. As we go to the south, we see a blob of heavier snow that is right on the border of tent and Sussex Counties in delaware. As we head up the coast, its getting heavier near the garden state parkway in ocean county. Were starting to see the intensity pick up a little bit. Lets see if the temperatures have dropped, they have not dropped much at all. Its just going to keep getting heavier in new jersey and delaware over the next couple of hours. Lets go to meteorologist bill henley for more on what to expect. Glenn, were watching it county by county, neighborhood by neighborhood because the location will make all the difference with this storm system. Temperatures are hovering around freezing. Over the next 45 minutes to an hour, the snow will be intensifying as we go into the morning commute. Delaware county, swarthmore in philadelphia, heavier. By 7 00 it starts to lighten up in some areas to the west. While its still coming down at a pretty good clip in northeast philadelphia, by 8 00, some areas will see it come to an end and very light snowfall in philadelphia with temperatures just above freezing. With temperatures above freezing, even though it is snowing now, most of the accumulation will be destined for grassy surfaces and colder surfaces too, sidewalks and driveways, finishing before 11 00 in some of the western suburbs but for Delaware County and philadelphia county, between 9 00 and 11 00 is when you can count on the snow coming to an end. By then, an inch or two on the grassy surfaces, a bit more in the northeast. All right, bill, thanks for that. We want to get you cupdate on School Delays, Garnett Valley School District opening two hours late. As we get more School Delays and closings well put them on the bottom of the screen. Meteorologist bill henley and our reporters give you a forecast neighborhood by neighborhood. Lets give you a shoot of the Atlantic City expressway, galloway township.
