WCAU NBC10 News Today Weekend At 7am January 24, 2016

Im rosemary connors. Its 7 00, 20 degrees outside. Today we start the cleanup after the blizzard of 2016. But some spots could still see problems in the wake of this storm. Right now there are tens of thousands of Power Outages from the blizzard. About 19,000 customers are still in the dark in new jersey with most of them in cape may county. Philadelphia International Airport says it will gradually resume operations today. Some airlines will have reduced schedule of arrivals and departures. And a little bit later on this morning, mayor kenny will hold a briefing on the citys response to the blizzard. Street clearing is expected to be a top issue at that 10 00 News Conference. Our reporters are fanned out all across the region. Were getting a birds eye view of the leftover snow from sky force 10, keeping an eye on the flooding fears on the shore, and we begin with meteorologist Michelle Grossmann who is tracking those frigid temperatures this morning. Thats right. Yeah, cold this morning for all the cleanup that is still ahead of us. Big difference, though, compared to this time yesterday. That snow has moved out of here, well wake up to sunshine. Skies already starting to brighten. Here is a live look outside. Were looking at the comcast tower being built. Breezy conditions this morning. We wont have the winds that we had in place yesterday, but still breezy. Finally dry on radar, so we can start to get things cleaned up. But it is bitterly cold. So if you have to shovel, you want to dress very warmly. Temperatures mainly in the 20s. 19 in allentown, 14 in lancaster, 22 in philadelphia. 12 in mt. Pocono, 22 in Atlantic City. You factor in the winds, this is what you want to dress for, dress for 5 below zero in mt. Pocono, dress for 13 in philadelphia. Good idea to get the scarf, cover your face, cover your hands with gloves. 9 feels like in Atlantic City and 7 in dover. So we are tracking the potential for more coastal flooding, coastal Flood Warnings still in effect until noon. You can see every county in the dark green. Potential for more street flooding, more beach erosion and rot damage. And winds are gusting still 22 Miles Per Hour in millville, still 23 in mt. Pocono, 17mileperhour wind gusts in wildwood. We will see sunshine and temperatures near the freezing mark by later on this afternoon. By 9 00, breezy, mostly sunny, 25. Ro at the freezing mark at 3 00. Cold and winds much less at that point. So we will see the temperatures dropping tonight in to the teens. Right around 10 north and west of the city. That will refreeze what melted came. So well talk about your monday morning commute coming up. The next high tide is within the next hour between 7 00 and 8 00 a. M. We are expecting some more coastal flooding just like we saw yesterday. Drew smith is live in wildwood this morning. And drew, i have to imagine that it might be difficult to really navigate those streets because you have ice and snow sitting on top of that water. Reporter and the water is freezing, trust me. Were out here just near it and you can feel it its so cold. Take a look as the sun is coming up, you can see that the drains are beginning to work. Actually since we came out here, some of the water is clearing off the tops of the roads where its highest. But you can see its ponding up at the intersections. A lot of streets look like this. We will pan the other way so i can show you some of the debris out here. Trash, leaves respect looks like a piece of a house or some sort of shed over here. And further down the street, i dont know if you can see it, but there is a boat down there, that is west wildwood. And yesterday there were boats floating through the streets. So that is one of them down there. The good news is that last night the high tide was not as bad as the earlier one in the morning yesterday. Powerful winds pushed record amounts of water into that area. Worse than super storm sandy according to the mayors. All the Barrier Islands were hit hard. We spoke with a homeowner who decided not to sleep here this wildwood last night because of the damage the storm caused. I lost power last night around 9 00 and i just got too cold to stay will anymore. And the water was coming up, i was afraid of coming in. And i dont know where im going to go home to. Reporter back live, you can see that is where the back bay is and this is where all of the problems started yesterday. Its where all of the problems could very well start again today. So there were a lot of people in shelters, those not in shelters but still here on the island are waking up many of them without power. Crews are out here trying to work on that. They are worried, though, about the winds as well as the other flood threats that could be coming through. But again, the threat here is not over. So if youre thinking about coming back, maybe you werent here yesterday, just wait to see what this next high tide will do. Live in wildwood, drew smith, nbc 10 news. Sky force 10 has a birds eye view of the mounds of snow that our region received. Matt delucia is live aboard sky force 10. Matt, tell us where you are and what youre seeing on this sunday morning after the big storm. Reporter it is quite a sight from the air. Were over south philadelphia and the stadium. Lets give you a look. You can see lincoln financial field. Over in the distance the wells fargo center. And you can see how much snow has fallen. In fact right in this general area, we see some of the front end loaders, crews just trying to clear out the parking lots. But inside the stadium itself, it is really just covered and blanketed in snow. Now, fortunately there is no baseball games today, so that is a good thing. So will they dont have to clear the park lots out quickly. But if we look over, panning over to the right here, well show you i76 here. And you can see that it is mostly clear. Weve seen passable conditions. People are out on the roads and driving. Again, probably still not a good idea to get out if you dont need to. We have seen many plows still out on the roadways. But just look at south philadelphia right now, all these streets and the houses here covered in snow. And especially the cars that are on these side streets, very difficult to park in south philadelphia as we know. And these cars are now buried in snow. Take a look right here, were zooming in and you can see all these cars just covered in snow because of the plows that made their way through the city. And you can see its very difficult, this person right here just kind of stuck there and trying to walk around in the snow. So its even tough to move on your feet here in this weather. But at least the streets are looking pretty good right now. Many of the main roads, but you see some of the side streets right there, it is very snow covered. So it will be a long day for plow crews. Everyone out there at home get the shovels and snow blowers ready, it will be a long day. Live in skooy force 10, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Now lets check in with Mitch Blacher, hes live in center city near the Rittenhouse Square neighborhoods. And i understand thats what youre seeing out there, those socked inside streets. Reporter yeah, earlier we were in the fairmount section but now weve moved over to 25th and pine where its a completely different story. Check out these streets. Its clear that on 25 tth stree there have been snow plows up and you saup and down, but there is just too much snow. We were fishtailing as we were trying to get up here to show you this section of the city. The intersection completely covered in snow. And if you can pan just down the street down pine toward the Schuylkill River, you can see its not stopping some from getting their morning workouts in this, but it will certainly stop kids. The city Street Department has more than 2500 miles of city streets to plow. Youre looking at 400 plus crews, nearly 700 staff all in charge of clearing these streets. The mayor as you said earlier holding a press conference 10 00 a. M. To talk about the progress. Mitch blacher live for us this morning in center city. We know you will be covering that News Conference for us. Thanks. A massive stretch of the pennsylvania turnpike remains closed this morning as emergency crews work to clear a 500 car backup in the western part of the state. From tractor trailers to tour buses to cars and suvs, hundreds of drivers were paralyzed, prompting the National Guard to call in troops to rescue stranded drivers. Governor wolf says officials are work to go move people to shelters if needed. The governor adds that each vehicle has been checked at least once and that workers have been delivering food and fuel to make sure that engines keep running so that the heat can stay on. It has gotten colder out here. The second thing is you can actually get a good idea of just how much snow is out here. We heard 30 inches. Yeah, thats what it looks like out here. Just a ton of snow. Now, folks are venturing out here now. But folks actually did get out a little bit last night, as well. We have video of the snow covered streets and the folks who were braving the cold and taking a look at everything as they checked out allentown and all the snow that has fallen all away the Lehigh Valley. And then the digging out starts. The plowing starts. We have seen a lot of plows come through here this morning. The big plows, the small plows, those trying to get through the side streets. We saw one street that was absolutely covered. We wondered, oh, my goodness, how will people get out of here. But a plow came along and really started to what are you doing out here this morning .
