Philadelphia City Council Woman helen gym is renewing her call to move the frank rizzo statue from center city. This is a live look at the statue thats been the center of controversy for the last week. Gym tweeted yesterday, its time to move the statue to a proper setting and recognize nat memorials arent permanent testaments to a fixed history. Her tweet came after the latest vandalism involving the frank rizzo mural in the past week, Police Arrested a total of three people for vandalizing artwork of the late mayor and police commissioner. First his statue in center city was egged and spray painted. Then his mural in south philadelphia was splashed with paint. The violence in charlottesville, virginia, caused an outcry, forcing cities across the country to consider taking down stamps that idolize leaders tied to slavery and racism. In philadelphia, the focus turned squarely to rizzo who critics accuse of racism. We talked to those both for and against having the memorials replaced. He was a very tough mayor. Very conservative. A lot of people didnt like him. But i felt safe in philly when he was the mayor. If it had to be changed out for another mural, i would be tote ail fine with it. Earlier this week, gym revived the longstanding calls to remove rizzos statue fraught center city. After the mural was vandalized yesterday, she tweeted, my call is and has always knin for a respectful public process to move the statue to a better location. And we caught up with Philadelphia City councilman Kenyatta Johnson to get his opinion. He was in grays ferry where 31st street is named after lillian ray, philadelphias first africanamerican female jug czar. We asked him about his feelings all the statue should stay or go. Personally for me, i think there are greater issues we need to being right now. We need to address the issue of gentrification, affordable housing, young people murdering one another with guns in the streets of philadelphia. The mayor says any effort to remove the statue would be a very long process. Spain is in official mourning for the victims of thursday evenings terror attacks in barcelona and another town.
