WCAU The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon July 22, 2016

Taken along the way, including no specific mention of the muslim ban, chuck todd. You know, lester, i thought it was an extraordinarily dark speech. There are going to be Many Americans who say hes describing i dont recognize that america. There are going to be others that say that is what i think i see or that is what i think i feel. But it was dark. Obviously he used the words law and order or law and talked about restoring those things. It was a dominant part of the speech. In fact it was interesting, he used some form of the words law and order or lawfulness 18 times. By contrast, the two biggest buzz words of the conservative movement for the last two years have been freedom and liberty. He never uttered the word liberty and only uttered the word freedom once. Greeting mike pence now, his Vice President ial running mate and the pence family as the trump and pence families meet there on the stage. Tom brokaw, your thoughts. Well, these are the themes that got him to where this is on this unlikely journey but tonight it was delivered on steroids. People in this hall see him as a man on a white horse that will lead them to say sanctuary and pull the drawbridge up behind him. Others see him as a demagogue of some kind. He kept talking back to the themes of were going to win, were going to crack down on terror, crack down on law and order. And Hillary Clinton, until she took office as secretary of state, the middle east was a land of milk and honey until she raised her hand and accepted that office. That will be a very hard sell. But obviously he has teed up who he wants to. Ive been doing this a long time. I have never witnessed somebody who came fromhe wre he did got to this place used the language that he did to run for president of the united states. You cannot underestimate, however, we are playing by different rules now. Social media, his fans and social media will be all over this tonight and help promote donald trump. Fireworks going off over lake erie in unison with the balloons now dropping over the quicken loans arena. Nicolle, i mentioned coming out that there was not a specific muslim ban as we heard. He changed it to suspend immigration to countries with terror. How significant is that . Its a significant pivot but it might be the only one. I was struck by two things i always believed during my two decades in republican politics. One, the voters always get it right, and two, the Republican Party that i worked for for two decades died in this room tonight. We are now represented as a party by a man who believes in protectionism, isolationism and nativism. And those were the forces that george w. Bush and john mccain too were most worried about during their times as leaders of the Republican Party. You believe the party died tonight . Well, the voters picked this guy. This is where the Republican Party is now. They now are attracted to those forces of isolationism and protectionism. The party i was part of for two decades is dead. Part of the reason hes successful, on the other hand, is a lot of people believe that that party didnt deliver and it created the system that were dealing with today, that it became absorbed in raising a lot of money and advancing the individual Office Holders who were there. And lets just say they think it failed. Yeah. They think that the policies of the bush era failed. Lets look at it this way, though we could be in a transformational moment in politics. He set pretty High Expectations by saying hes going to make the borders secure. These are huge promises hes made. I think im so curious to see how this speech is received. In the room i think it was incredibly compelling and the people loved it but it really comes down to which version of america do you think you live in. Right. On the one hand you have him giving a bill of particulars that is downright dark, its ominous. I kept thinking about the lego movie theme song, everything is awesome. This was everything was awful. If you think you believe in this america, if that resonates and is true to you, this will appeal. I have to tell you, though, i was struck at how Big Government this speech is. This is a big, strong government that donald trump, the republican nominee, and very expensive. He didnt say how he was going to pay for any of this, but hes got Bernie Sanders free college in there, hes got a lot of things in there. All these roads and bridges and hes massively cutting taxes. I dont know how he pays for any of this. They often say that you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose. If this was poetry, i dont know what prose is going to be. I did go back and look at Ronald Reagans acceptance speech when he was nominated in 1980. A much different version. You still have the core values of the Republican Party but he opened by saying im going to work with governors to protect the right of women. Who did he quote most of all in this speech . Fdr, Franklin Roosevelt during the depression. We are going to continue to watch this celebration in the hall and take a short break. The picture will remain on the screen. Well be right back. It was a campaign that many had once written off as a joke, a publicity stunt. But tonight donald trump came into this hall here in cleveland and claimed the nomination as the republican candidate for president. The celebration continuing here at the quicken loans arena. We should note that it was the longest speech, longest acceptance speech in modern times. I believe we go back to 1972. Thats correct. There was one that long. But the theme again in his speech tonight, America First. That is going to do it for the fourth and final night of our coverage of the Republican National convention in cleveland. We hope you will join us next week. We all move on to philadelphia, the Democratic Convention there. For now for chuck todd, savannah guthrie, nicolle wallace, tom brokaw and our entire nbc news team, im lester holt. Good night from cleveland. My husband is ready to lead this great nation. Vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust. This team is ready. Our party is ready. My opponent asks her supporters to recite a threeword loyalty pledge. It reads im with her. I choose to recite a different pledge. My pledge reads im with you, the american people. Donald trump accepts the republican nomination for president tonight, casting himself as a man of the people, the president who will keep you safe and a champion for working women. Good evening, everyone. Im Jim Rosenfield live on this final night of the Republican National convention in cloec cleveland, ohio. On the campaign trail we have seen that he speaks off the cuff. Tonight he did stick to the teleprompter for the most part, giving a carefully crafted speech that took aim at Hillary Clinton. Listen. I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the united states. The selfdescribed voice of the american people, donald trump vowing to put you first during what he calls a moment of crisis in our nation. Beginning on january 20th, of 2017, safety will be restored. Reading from a prepared speech, trump called himself the law and order candidate, revealing his plan of action, adding millions of jobs and trillions in new wealth, lowering taxes, rebuilding the military and securing our borders with a wall. Nearly 180,000 Illegal Immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens. As expected, trump also attacked Hillary Clinton, calling her a puppet for big business and major donors. He even welcomed Bernie Sanders supporters to join him against hillary. Her bad instints and her bad judgment, something pointed out by Bernie Sanders, are what caused so many of the disasters unfolding today. The famed businessman and former reality star said its time to defeat isis overseas while here at home, put America First and win. We cannot afford to be so politically correct anymore and at one point, the crowd was chanting lock her up, referring to Hillary Clinton. He said lets defeat her. T what was the response where you are . You know, jim, i watched to see from right between pennsylvania and ohio, and i can tell you, some people were cheering louder than others. More cheers in pennsylvania than we saw in governor john kasichs home state of ohio. But donald trump is now the republican nominee. Now there was one hiccup in that speech. A protester in the upper level did have a sign that said build bridges not walls and was yelling. Donald trump sort of paused his speech for a moment, praised the police, then turned around and went back do his speech as the crowd was yelling. I want to bring with me, pennsylvania speaker, you were not a donald trump supporter, you once questioned. What was it like to hear him accept your partys nomination . I thought it was an outstanding speech, very policy oriented. Heres the thing. Americans want familysustaining jobs. They want to know that we are going to have a strong economy. They also want to know that theres going to be the rule of law and safety, and that were going to make sure that theres national security. I thought he was very, very focussed, very detailed and very positive. I was impressed. Keep in mind, i was for rubio originally. And youre now on board . Im for the Republican Team of trump and the nominee did an outstanding job this evening. We had wondered at the beginning whether this would be a contested convention. It was not, things did not go perfectly, but this nomination belongs now to donald trump. Jim, back to you and lauren, i dont think ive ever seen so many balloons dropping from the ceiling in my entire life. And the family continues with trumps daughter ivanka in the role of introducing her father before he took the stage. And ivanka did her best to smooth out her fathers rougher edges. The mother of three touted his strength as a leader. But her role might have been to convince the female voters out there that her father is the right person for the job. Men of all background and ethnicities on my fathers job sites, and long before it was commonplace, you also saw women. My father values talent. He recognizes real knowledge and skill when he finds it. He is colorblind and gender neutral. As ivanka trump spoke, Hillary Clinton tweeted from 2012 saying clinton was a terrific woman who does a great job. Now another highly anticipated speech earlier in the evening came from an openly gay rnc republican delegate, and well hear what he had to say a little later on. Welcome back to decision 2016. A historic night here at the rnc in cleveland, ohio. For the first time in nearly two decades in fact, an openly gay man addressed the delegates right here at the rnc. His name is peter teal, a tech millionaire, admonished about lgbt rights and fighting unnecessary culture wars, but he brought the crowd to his feet when he became the first speaker in Party History to say this. I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a republican. But most of all, i am proud to be an american now teal drew a parallel of himself between him and trump saying both men are builders and that trump is the best to rebuild america, and trump did speak out in his remarks in support of the lgbt community. After nearly 20 years, roger ailes stepped down from his post at fox news. It comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed earlier this month by gretchen carlson.
