Reporter this man returned home to survey the damage. What else can i do . What els is there i can do . Its fortunate we werent here. Reporter patients were treated at hospitals mostly for cuts and bruises. We saw people who had furniture come down on them, a mirror came down off the wall, a gentleman had a gash in his head. Reporter one more serious injury, a boy crushed by a fire place coming down. Before it issued an alert. California is still developing the system for future quakes. Knowing what happened here in napa was not the big one. In the past 24 hours there have been dozens of smaller aftershocks, but at this point odds are very slim that this 6. 0 quake was a precursor to a larger one. So far no fatalities having reported. Matt . All right, joe fryer on this story for us. That Early Warning system is incredible. Even if it can give you just a few seconds warning before that strikes. Says what hell miss most are his talks with his son. We used to talk every day. Me not having a conversation with my son it bothers me. Just seeing how he feels, going on in a day. Seeing him in a casket today made it reality. I looked at him. I talked to him. I touched him. Reporter whats going to be the hardest part . Walking away. Walking away from that casket. Reporter tamron, i also asked the browns whether they had confidence in a local prosecutors handling the case, they told me no. Governor jay nixon does not plan to appoint a special prosecutor. The move coming just days after the murder of another american hostage james foley at the hand of isis militants. Keir simmons has the latest on this. Keir, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. Good news that an american captive was freed sunday by the group. Hes expected to be reunited with his family shortly. Right now theres a desperate race to help the other hostages held by isis. Free after a terrifying ordeal. American writer peter kurtif we leased after two years as a captive. Isis, its feared they are holding 20 westerners including american steven sotloff. But british intelligents are closing in. The man with a british accent in the gruesome video of james foleys death has been identified. Uk security sources tell nbc news. Theyve applied some voice analysis to it. They have done some facial recognition stuff which they can do even when someones masked. Reporter but two different knives are visible on the tape suggesting more than one killer. And there is the question, who filmed james foleys murder . And why do a small minority of westerners support isis . There are an estimated 70 american recruits. This weekend i met with british extremists prepared to defend isis. There are a lot of people who would feel that they do have a duty to protect themselves and defend against america. Reporter but killing a journalist is not protecting yourself. Who is really responsible for the murder of james foley. Reporter the man who put the knife in his neck. Youve got to ask why was this particular man chosen. It seems he was chosen because he was an american citizen. Reporter it is so sickening, so disturbing to hear a group like that exercise their First Amendment rights by saying things like that. But i said to them directly you do not even represent a fraction of muslims around the world. Thank you so much. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and now the new moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. Good morning. Lets start with what keir reported there. British authorities believe theyve identified the isis militant responsible for james foleys death. Over the past several days weve seen the administration indicate its open to u. S. Air strikes. Is the president leaning towards expanding those strikes . They made the decision to expand the strikes, the question now is where and what legal authority. He had the authority to deal with air strikes in iraq. He had the Long Authority he was given back in 2001 and 2002 for al qaeda and iraq. When you cross into syria, there are larger legal questions. Do they have to go to congress . Do they need the permission of the Syrian Government . So that part of it is tricky. Theyre trying to decide these targets in syria how important are they right now and should it trigger a debate in congress. To add to the trickiness is the optics. We know that well. Some saying the president seemed disengaged. He returned to the white house last night. James cameron ended his vacation early david cameron. David cameron, excuse me. Is this politics as usual in that town . Yes, it is. But this is stuff they should have seen coming. This is not new to them. Now you have back tracking. Weve got David Axelrod saying maybe democrats are too hard on president oba president bush when they beat him up for his vacations. The fact is the president wants his downtime. He wishes he could keep it. You know, its a job that does follow him 24 7. So i think it is somewhat politics. But, you know what . Its something they should have been more aware of. And jobs that follow you 24 7, speaking of, being the moderator of meet the press. The big announcement came down that you have been tapped for this gig. You start september 7th. September 7th. What do you look forward to especially when you look at some of the polling numbers, the unhappiness people have with congress, what are you bringing to the conversation . The job to all of us is to demystify for the American Public but then translate the message for washington people. I think thats part of the challenge. When things are going well in the political journalism world, its because were playing that role of basically being the translator, being the interpreter between america and washington. Hopefully i can do my best to get that going. Certainly you will. Congratulations, chuck. Now lets head to willie for the other top morning stories. Willie, good morning again. Good morning.
