WCAU Today November 14, 2014

Stretch. Al roker just an hour away from setting the Guinness Record for the longest weather cast in the history of mankind. Will his voice last . Will fatigue make him insane . Al, do you know where you are right now . Find out live, today, friday, november 14th, 2014. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Roker roker roker al, good morning, everybody. Welcome to today on this friday morning, or as we like to call it, what is it, the 33rd hour of rokerthon . Rokerthon roker friday. He is about to set a Guinness World record for the longest weather cast. Were less than an hour away. Last night i came to visit him about 11 00, brought him some barbecue, and i said, you know, youre really sharp, and he looked at me and said, no, im not. Thats what natalie said, you sound like harvey firestein. Hes been at it for almost 33 hours. A lot of people have wondered, has he taken a shower or changed his clothes . He did put on a fresh pocket square. Got to stay daper. Al, lets talk about rokerthon, but also the weather story. Thank you, i do sound like brenda baa ccaro. But we have a lot to talk about and continue to have a lot to talk about. We have this frigid outbreak thats going to continue. This is, in fact, were looking at the snapback of the polar vortex for next week. This is going to be colder than what we have right now. But in the meantime, what we expect to see for today, right now, atlanta is at 26, kansas city, 18. It feels like 27 degrees in washington, d. C. And our highs today are going to be well below zero. Tallahassee at 16 degrees below, make that 58 degrees in tallahassee. Thats 16 degrees below average, indianapolis. Even atlanta for today, a high of 47 degrees. 18 degrees below average. Thats where Gabe Gutierrez is right now. And everybody is feeling the chill. My friend, youve got the puffer on and people are going to be staying in it for a while. Reporter hey, al. Good morning. I dont know how i feel about this rokerthon thing, man. You know, two days ago, it was 60 degrees here, and now as you mentioned, were dealing with temperatures about 26, 27 degrees, with the windchill, though, it feels much colder than that. But hey, well take it. Other parts of the country are dealing with much worse. Overnight up in the northeast, these are pictures from social media from new york, new jersey, and philadelphia. They dealt with some snowfall there in wisconsin. Theyve been dealing with brutal snowfall now for a little bit there. Used to this type of stuff in december, but this is november. Then until colorado as well, denver set a record low, negative 14 degrees. The south has also seen a little bit of snowfall, memphis and little rock. But thankfully, here in atlanta, we do not expect a repeat of what we saw last winter, when 2 or 3 inches of snow and ice brought this city to a standstill. No precipitation is forecast until sunday, and then by then, temperatures are expected to be well above freezing. Savannah . Gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. Or as al calls him my friend. He didnt know who he was talking to. Hes to be forgiven this morning. All right. Some other news this morning, doctors in nebraska are getting ready to treat the tenth case of ebola on american soil. The patient is arriving from sierra leone, where hed been working as a surgeon. Kristen dahlgren has more on that story for us. Kristen, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. A Government Official tells nbc news that the cdc has been notified. This is a surgeon who was working with ebola patients in sierra leone and tested positive for the disease on monday. Hes a citizen of sierra leone, but a permanent resident here in america. On saturday, he could be flown to the Nebraska Medical Center in omaha, where two other patients, including nbc free lance cameraman ashoka mukpo has been treated successfully for ebola. A spokesperson for Nebraska Medical Center wouldnt confirm that he was coming, but only that the medical crew on air jet picking him up would evaluate the patient and if he was stable enough for transport, he would arrive in omaha some time saturday afternoon. That would make him the only known ebola case in the u. S. The doctor being treated here in new york was just released on tuesday. If he does end up in nebraska, we know theyre certainly equipped to handle it. Now the fresh fallout from the secret service. A scathing new report detailing the security lapses that allowed an is intruder to enter the white house resident excuse me, the white house itself this past september. And this morning, its raising a lot of tough questions for the agency. Nbcs Peter Alexander is at the white house for us this morning. Peter, good morning to you. Reporter savannah, good morning to you. This is the ninepage review from the department of Homeland Security. They say that everything that could have gone wrong that night did. And it also lays out in detail when Omar Gonzalez got through the front doors here at the white house, where he doesnt run past agents, he walked. This is the home video of fence jumper Omar Gonzalez armed with a knife running across the white house north lawn in september. A highly critical new report from the department of Homeland Security reveals exactly what happened that night. After barging through the white house front doors, knocking a female secret Service Officer to the ground, reports say gonzalez walked past the officer, who accidentally grabbed a flashlight instead of her baton before pulling out her gun. Ignoring commands to stop, gonzalez turned left and walked into the east room and then turned around and was eventually tackled by an officer in the center hallway. The report adds the armed counterassault team didnt immediately enter the mansion because they were unfamiliar with the layout of the white house and waited to get into a tactical formation before going in. This was just an unfortunate group of mishaps that all, unbelievably, happened at the exact same time. Reporter the rereview blames the secret service for a series of performance, organizational, it canal and other failures. It revealed the alarm systems and radios failed to work and many of the officers on duty didnt see gonzalez as he jumped the fence. Among the failures, the inaction of a Uniformed Secret Service k9 handler inside a van whose ear piece was out and wasnt listening to his twoway radio. Instead, the officer was taking a personal call on his cell phone, and only saw gonzalez after seeing another officer chasing him. The head of the house Homeland Security Committee Told nbc news, more hearings are planned. This is a premiere federal Law Enforcement agency thats really gone awry. Reporter the secret service says its already changed its training and procedures. Still, a Law Enforcement official tells nbc news that so far, no one has been placed on administrative leave as a result of this report and that at least for now, the individuals involved remain on their post here at the white house. Savannah and willie . All right. Peter alexander, thank you very much. Now to chilling new threats from isis. In a new video, the group lashes out again at the west and the man thought to be behind the message is the isis leader who some believe had been silenced for good. Nbcs Richard Engel is in turkey for us this morning. What you tell us . Reporter good morning, willie. Not just new data, there is new data that has come out from a respected british think tank that shows that u. S. Led air strikes against isis are not slowing down the group and that video appears to show that the groups leader is alive and well. He is perhaps the most wanted, most dangerous man in the world. The last time we saw abubacker al baghdadi was in early july, when dressed the part, he declared him the cliff or ruler of his party. And then he disappeared. Attacked daily by u. S. Air strikes. Until last week, iraqi officials claimed one of those air strikes killed or maybe just injured baghdadi. It seems those reports were wishful thinking. On thursday, in an audio recording which isis said was from baghdadi, a man sounding very much like him, called on others to join the cause. And unleash, quote, volcanos of jihad. Hes showing that hes getting a lot more credibility and a lot more support. Reporter isis has proven effective on the battlefield and at the propaganda war, attracting more than just disillusioned lone wolves. A dangerous Egyptian Militant Group recently pledged its allegiance to isis, as did an entire city in libya, run by militants. Baghdadi thinks he has a state and hes looking to expand it. In the new recording, baghdadi no longer seems content to recruit individuals. Hes looking to sign up groups or even states. Willie, savannah, back to you . Richard engel in turkey for us this morning. Richard, thanks so much. And dont forget to tune in tonight for Richard Engel reporting, the battle against isis. That airs at 9 00 eastern on msnbc. Lets go to natalie. A big story in ferguson, missouri. People really on edge there as they await a grand jury decision. Lots of fear and worry about more violence, perhaps if that grand jury decides whether or not to charge a Police Officer in the death of unarmed teenager, michael brown. Ron allen is in ferguson this morning with the very latest. Reporter theres a lot of tension because so many people here dont think that officer Darren Wilson will be charged with a crime. Police have essentially said he acted in selfdefense. Now as decision day nears, signs of new confrontations and also at the same time, calls for peace. Much of the heart of ferguson is hunkered down, fearing a repeat of the violence that followed Michael Browns death in august. Now as the grand jury hears from its final witnesses, including nationally renowned pathologist, dr. Michael baden, hired by the brown family to perform an independent autopsy, and now under court order not to discuss his testimony. Back, back. Reporter protesters gather in training sessions, preparing to take to the streets. People will be working to find the confidence they need, to go out there, despite their fears. Reporter at this gun shop and firing range, they say sales are running three times above normal. Police who faced intense scrutiny for at times acting more like soldiers than cops say theyll respect the rights of demonstrators. But what we wont tolerate is when people start acts of violence, start to infringe upon the rights of others. Caught in the middle, ordinary residents, worried about their towns reputation. A lot of people think, oh, ferguson, things are crazy there. But we want to be here. And we have felt safe. Absolutely safe. Reporter this week, the brown family took their case to the u. N. , testifying about their son at a conference on torture. This fight is not over. Im not giving up. Reporter demanding justice while also calling for peaceful protests in their sons name. School officials here are especially concerned about the safety of tens of thousands of students if a decision comes during the school day. We now understand, prosecutors have said theyll give the schools 24 hours notice if a decision comes on a weekend and three hours notice on a weekday. Natalie . Ron allen in ferguson, missouri for us, thank, ron. Caught in the cross fire, a Police Officer wounded by a ricochet of bullets and another officer is stabbed while confronting a knifewielding man at a Naval Submarine base. This happened thursday night in groten, connecticut. Officials say an officer fired at the man when he tried to enter the base through a pedestrian gate. Another officer was hit by the bullets, but is going to be okay. The suspect was not hurt, but was turned over to local police. President obama will travel to australia today to take part in the g20 economic summit. Earlier, the president met with myanmars prodemocracy hero, awning sang suu aung san suu kyi. He was released from house arrest four years ago and is now a member of parliament. Both leaders say they want to see more progress towards democratic reform in the country. And a big honor and a huge surprise for nbcs own Brian Williams thursday night. He was inducted into the new jersey hall of fame, but it was a surprise to almost everyone when the boss showed up to make the presentation. Take a look. To paraphrase a friend of mine, its Walter Cronkite and jon stewart had had a baby, and if due to the ongoing controversy over samesex marriage, they had to abandon that baby on the new jersey turnpike, and it grew up to be a news anchor, its name would be Brian Douglas williams. Very good one. Theres an intro like no other. Williams, a jersey boy through and through, spent much of his time nor middletown. James gandolfini also inducted posthumously as well. Thats like the Brian Williams dream thats like here. I know. Amazing. Would he come to work . Brian talked about, too, as a young man, hanging out at these bars around the jersey shore, hoping maybe bruce would show up that night to play. And now bruce is introducing him, inducting him into the hall of fame. Pretty cool. Pretty awesome. Congrats, brian. All right, al. Are you there, al . Its us, your castmates. Thats right. I know. And Brian Williams, he called in last night for us, given what he was going through at that event, meant even more to us. We have snow in the plain states, on into the Pacific Northwest. Were looking at lakeeffect snow, still continuing in western new york into parts of northeastern pennsylvania and the gulf coast has sunshine, but cooler than usual temperatures. Well get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 but dry. Gusty winds to 30 Miles Per Hour will make temperatures in the 40es feel like theyre in the 30s. Tomorrow morning, colder. 30 degrees the low temperature. By the time the walk starts to defeat als, 40 degrees and up to 44 saturday afternoon. Clouds increase with a chance of rain and snow sunday night. A chilly rain falling monday may end with snowflakes and then turning colder starting tuesday. Have a great day. And thats your latest weather. Al, i was in here visiting you at about 11 00 last night, with age about eight hours ago, and you said you were teetering at that point. How are you doing right now .
