Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning, everyone. Welcome to today on a thursday morning. As we wake up all focus is on this 36yearold conductor that derailed two nights ago. Why he had that train going so fast when he was supposed to slow down to 50 Miles Per Hour. The search for answers in the deadly derailment of thing a track train in philadelphia. We have complete coverage the stories of the victim was died and the Safety System that could have prevented this tragedy. Natalie has made her way through the crash site. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you, savannah matt. Thats right, it is another busy day here behind me. Its very much an active scene. Right now, you are looking live at the locate motetive. This is where that engineer was at the controls at the time of the accident. As you see, its been lifted up overnight, placed back on the track as they prepare now to take it away for the more intensive part of their investigation. We can tell you, though that we have learned that Brandon Bostian has hired a lawyer who claims his client does not remember a crash. He suffered a head injury according to his attorney. Police tell nbc news bostian has given a blood sample and voluntarily handed over his sfoevenlt as mentioned, the ntsb says amtrak was traveling at 106 Miles Per Hour as it entered that curve. That is more than twice the authorized speed limit here. Even as the investigation now moves forward, authorities have spent yet another night searching this crash site for possibly more victims. Coming up we will have one sons agonizing plea to find his missing father as well as the stories of the seven victims, those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. Guys. A heart breaking story, thank you very much. As we said earlier, obviously, there is a lot of information about the man at the control. Tom costello covers transportation for us. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, mat. We know the engineer slammed on the brakes at the last minute. He was allowed to go up to 80 miles an hour and slow during the curve. The ntsb says there is absolutely no question he was speeding at the time of the crash. This morning, engineer Brandon Bostian is at the center of the investigation. 32yearsold an amtrak engineer for five years, he was injured in the accident but was released from the hospital. Late wednesday, police say bostian had been injured and gave them a blood sample and his cell phone. They say bostian has no recollection of the crash. He remembers driving the train. He remembers going to that area generally. He has absolutely no recollection of the incident or anything unusual. The next thing he recalls is being thrown around coming to finding his bag, getting his cell phone and dialing 911. Reporter on cnn the mayor of philadelphia immediately suggested bostian was at fault for running the train at 160 Miles Per Hour in a 50mileperhour zone. Clearly, it was reckless in terms of driving by the eng fear. There is no way in the world that he should have been going that fast into the curve. Reporter but later on in the evening with nbc news the mayor softened his criticism. Lets try to find out what else is going on with this individual was there some other, you know medical issue, psychological issue . Sleep deprivation . Reporter but the ntsb is not drawing any conclusion. The investigators insist they have months of work ahead of them. We want to find out what was going on in the cab. We want to find out what was going on in his mind. Reporter his Facebook Page is full of well wishers. Meanwhile, more witnesses are describing the terrible scene of the accident tuesday night. Notify amtrak to shut down the entire northeast corridor. We have a major event here. Reporter ryan cane rushed to the scene. The train had just derailed. Reporter his mind internet video feed was viral. There was total chaos. It was surreal. It was straight out of a movie. No movie could capture how this was. Reporter a scene of utter destruction that investigators are methodically working through as overnight trains began to slowly remove the train from the tracks. A live image right now from the news 10 chopper over the scene as theyre working this closely. By the way, the ntsb says there was a camera a forward looking camera out the cabs window. That would give them a view of what that engineer should have 15 e seen as it was moving down the tracks. Lastly the corridor killed a person is e pen on this critical artery here. Back to you. Tom costello thanks, very much. We have to dig deeper into this investigation and those questions about the trains engineer and the speed. The ntsb member joins us now live. Good morning to you. Based on right now what the ntsb has been able collect preliminarily and specifically the issue of the engineer going 106 miles an hour. Are you ready to say that excessive speed was a key factor in causing this crash . Caller good morning, savannah. At this point we are trying to collect information. Yes, we are very concerned and interested about the fact that the train was going that fast. We have learned now on that curve the speed limit was 50 miles an hour just before it on the straight the ntsb says it was 80 miles an hour if he was going 106 miles an hour can you think why he was given a reason for him to be going that fast . Caller we certainly want to emphasize, we want to understand what was going on. We want to understand why this train was operating that way. Was eight mechanical issue . Was it some sort of human issue . Thats what were here to do to figure out what happened so we can understand it to prevent it from happening again. Has the ntsb set a time to organize an interview . Caller we have not reached out. But we will be doing. That its not uncommon for us to wait a day or so to conhave a less convalesce after an incident like this. Some people appreciate the courtesy on one hand. He certainly has been through a lot. Isnt there a certain urgency to speak with him, especially when memories get dimmer as days go past . Caller certainly, you are right, savannah memories do change over time. There is a phenomenal right after a tragic event where you dont remember things so there is sort of that sweet spot. We want to make sure theyre ready. We want to make sure that theyre ready to do it mentally and physically. We hope to do that in the next day or so. That would be our hope. Our understanding is there were toxicology blood tests conducted on the engineer. At this point would the ntsb be in possession of the results of those . Caller you are right, amtrak is required by federal law to conduct those tests. The results are sent off to a lab. We dont know the results right now. That is information we will certainly have. There is information we learned that this conductor was able to apply the mortgages brake, that it actually worked to slow the train 4 miles an hour down to 102. Obviously it was a fight too l. A. What does it tell you about the condition of the conductor and the condition of the brakes that he was able to apply those brakes . Caller you are right. The engineer did apply the brakes. So we want to we will be conducting a we will be doing a brake test to test the efficacy of the brakes on the train. So everything is on the table. Were just going through very methodically collecting information, doing tests. So today is the second day of the investigation. We think we will get a lot done today. Finally, as far as the rescue goes there is a report that this engineer met with the Philadelphia Police department spoke briefly but did not give them a full statement. He left. Does that strike you as unusual . Does that trouble you at all . Caller no it doesnt trouble us. Obviously, he has been getting a lot of scrutiny. His name is all over the media these days. I think if i was involved with anything like that, i would want to seek council as well. We see that oftentimes. So that doesnt trouble us at all. I know its a busy day for you, sir. I appreciate your time. All right. The impact of the tragedy obviously now being felt in communities all across the country.
