Who shined the brightest on fashions biggest night, today, tuesday, may 3rd, 2016. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, everybody. Welcome to today on a tuesday morning. Somebody had a late night last night. That met gala is wild. I had to dust off my silver tux with the lightbulbs all over it. It is a who is who in fashion, move cere movies, music and everything. First, the top story. Donald trump and Hillary Clinton looking to make their paths to the nomination unstoppable in indiana today. We begin our 2016 coverage with nbc National Correspondent peter alexander. He is in indianapolis this morning. Good morning. Good morning to you. A steady stream of voters arriving here early this morning. In indiana, the polls opened a short time ago. Ted cruz got the oneonone matchup with donald trump he wanted, but trump is looking for his seventh straight win. If the numbers hold, by this time tomorrow, the general election matchup could be all but set. Reporter donald trump rallying the faithful near notre dame, looking to rack up a decisive win. Indiana is becoming very important. Its called importantville. Reporter Many Americans are turning their attention to the fall. The newest online poll shows trump narrowing the gap with Hillary Clinton, trailing her by six points. 20 of voters still undecided. Despite charges of sexism, trump is revisiting his rant against clinton for showsing at her events. If she was a man, i could say it. As a woman, ladies, im not allowed to say it. She was streaming at the teleprompt teleprompter, but i wont say it. Reporter cruz is running into a wall of opposition. A question everyone here should ask are you canadian . Reporter confronting trump supporters. Lying ted dont just scream and yell. Reporter cruz insists, win or lose, indiana is not his last stand, with hallie jackson. We are in for the distance. We are competing. As long as we have a viable path to victory, i am in till the end. What does that mean . Nobody is going to get to 1,237. Reporter there have been missteps. 83 of americans say cruz picked Carly Fiorina as a running mate to revitalize his path. Fiorina recently fell off stage. Even i would have helped her. Cruz didnt do anything. Reporter new evidence how Democratic Candidates may attack their republican opponents. By blinking them to trumps words. Id look her in the fat, ugly face of hers. Reporter president obama going after the republican front runner in a new interview with a New Hampshire local tv station. He is not somebody who, even within the republican party, can be considered as equipped to deal with the problems of this office. For months, Donald Trumps critics said he had a ceiling but hes blasted through it again. Our new poll showing him at 56 support nationwide among republicans. The spike another sign that traditional republicans are beginning to rally together behind the front runner. Savannah and matt . Peter alexander on the republicans. Thank you. Lets turn to the democratic side of things. Hillary clinton holds a slight lead over Bernie Sanders heading into todays indiana primary. Its this encounter in West Virginia, with a father who lost his job as a coal worker, thats getting a lot of attention this morning. Andrea mitchell has more on that. Good morning. Good morning, matt. It was that conversation, a round table here in West Virginia, when the unemployed coal worker pressed clinton hard on comments shed made about the coal industry. Remarks, she said, that didnt accurately reflect her efforts to help the area hit hard by job losses. Reporter while looking for mine support in trumpfriendly coal country, Hillary Clinton in a candid moment on the campaign trail i do feel a little bit sad and sorry i gave folks the reason or excuse to be so upset with me. That is not what i intended at all. Reporter the Democratic Front runner apologizing to a father of three, bo copley, who recently lost his job at a coal company. Unfortunately, my circumstan circumstance, being here, is not as pleasant as what everyone elses is. Reporter fighting back tears as he confronted clinton about comments shed made earlier this year at an ohio town hall. Were going to put a lot of coal miners and Coal Companies out of business. I just want to know how you can say youre going to put a lot of coal miners out of jobs, and then come in here and tell us how youre going to be our friend. I have been talking about helping coal country for a very long time. Reporter clinton says her remarks were taken out of context, as she touted the 30 billion plan she had announced last year to help the struggling coal community. What i was saying is that the way things are going now, we will continue to lose jobs. I didnt mean we were going to do it. What i said was, that is going to happen unless we take action to try to help and prevent it. Clinton went on to say that she knows she faces an uphill battle with the voters in this region. As for copley, who is a republican, he says he doesnt know who hell vote for, but that he does not feel swayed by her apology. Interesting and candid moment. Unusual moment on the campaign trail. Certainly is. Andrea, thanks very much. Mike murphy, adviser to the Jeb Bush Campaign and now an nbc news political analyst. Mike, good morning to you. Lets start on the gop side. Indiana is important because of the calendar but it is a microcosm, isnt it, of the gop. You have conservatives, blue collar americans. Is that why it counts . Every kind of republican is there. Theoretically, if cruz is going to stop trump, midwestern state like that is not trumps home region. Its more open field playing ground. He should be able to do it. If the polling is right, and it probably is, trump will have a good night. Its not only delegates now. Its the phycology. Trump is a steam rolling going on, which could be the path to california and the end. Could be early to do the to bli obituary, but why didnt the stop Trump Movement get off the ground . Trump is selling what the grievance half of the party want. The big donors dont like trump but they dont love cruz either. Give me 3 million to switch from one unpopular outcome to another hasnt been a good pitch. Lets switch over to the democrats for a second. Its tight in indiana. Hypothetically, if Bernie Sanders loses to Hillary Clinton there tonight, how does he make the argument to anyone that hes anything but hurting the presumptive nominee . Thats the box hes in. Hes captured the hearts and minds but not the super delegates. Even with a few more wins, mathematically, shes in the drivers seat. He doesnt have the power, i believe, to be nominated, but he has the power to make her life hell because of his grip of millenials, which is important for her. She wants to move on to the general election and is hiring battle state ground officials. She has to wash the bear without getting the fur wet. Push him aside, but dont make an enemy to out of him for the general. Use an olive branch for his supporters. Theyre fighting for something. I think the Clinton Campaign better create a fight that doesnt involve her for him. The clinton folks need to move it from anticlinton on to some policy, something to get his Movement Something to do, other than blow up the convention with her. Mike murphy, thank you. Thank you, mike. Appreciate it. Breaking news this morning from iraq. Defense secretary ash carter announcing an american serviceman has been killed in combat near the northern iraqi city off erbil.
