While everybody is continues on maternity leave. She is. This is the kind of morning you just wake up and want to stay under the covers with all the crummy weather. It is our top story this morning. Snow and ice, bitter cold taking aim at the northeast after hammering the midwest over the weekend. We have it covered from the roads to the airports, and of course als forecast. Lets start with nbcs kristen da dahlgren in burlington, vermont. Reporter good morning, matt. It is still coming down here. Even in places like this where they are used to snow, timing couldnt be worse. This storm has been an absolute travel nightmare. In the northeast, snow piling up overnight. Coast to coast, snow and freezing rain impacting millions. In at least six midwest states, more than a foot of snow. In minnesota, icy roads resulted in hundreds of crashes and dozens of injuries. Some Truck Drivers in oregon stuck in place for three days. Their big rig surrounded by ice. Ive been truck for 21 years and this is one of the worst ice storms ive seen coming down the gorge. Reporter this tree in portland tumbling down leaving an entire neighborhood without power. In detroits metro airport, a scary moment for passengers. Delta 724, we just went into the grass. Reporter a plane evacuated after a plane skid off the runway. Bad weather also forcing cancellations of thousands of flights sunday. A headache for travelers and likely only the beginning with temperatures expected to drop. Some areas getting crushed with snow. Some folks are taking it in stride. If i didnt like snow, i wouldnt live in cleveland. Reporter outside cleveland, nearly 33 inches recorded. Normally were teased by Mother Nature a little bit, few inches here and there. But 30plus inches, i had to see it for myself. Reporter for anyone who is complaining this morning, just wait. We are talking about those temperatures plunging. We are talking about between 15 and 30 degrees below normal in many places, guys. Thank you very much. As we said, the snow and ice are causing big problems for travelers. Thousands of Flights Canceled across the midwest. Nbcs Morgan Radford is at chicagos ohare airport. Morgan, good morning. Reporter hoda, good morning. A messy monday morning for a lot of travelers. Just shy of 200 flights all across the country canceled this morning. Nearly half of them right here in chicago. But the reality is those numbers are relief for a lot of those weekend travelers who saw more than 2,000 Flights Canceled across the country because of that Winter Weather. The majority of those cancellations were here in the midwest. We saw them in chicagos midway airport, at ohare and in detroit. A lot of those passengers this morning scrambling to get on new flights and telling me that process isnt easy and it isnt cheap. Supposed to be here this morning at 6 00 and supposed to leave at 10 00. Now im on a 2 55. Both flights got canceled today. The airline i was originally on, their web night was not working to allow me to rebook and i couldnt sit on the phone any longer on hold waiting to do it. I just went to a different airli booked through them. Reporter how has this entire experience been . Expensive. Reporter United Airlines has agreed to waive any rebooking fees. American and delta have agreed for full refunds. Thats for any significant delays above 60 or 90 minutes. But the reality is given that temperatures are expected to drop below zero in some parts of the current, we dont expect these winter delays to go anywhere any time soon. Morgan, thank you so much. Uhoh. Seems like we switched over. It was snowing here for a while. Now weve got rain but a fair amount of our northeastern viewers are going to be looking at snow. You can see right now, upstate new york, on into new england, heavier showers and thunderstorms from washington, d. C. All the way back in to tennessee. But the snowfall depending on where the temperature is boston, you are right on the line. That mixed precipitation, 38 degrees. 21 bangor. Also burlington. Albany, 32. Over the rest of the day well probably see heaviest amounts in northern new england. Now, the cold air. Polar vortex. It is always up there, right . The words coming back because it started to weaken. Now it is sending cold air into first siberia, then down on into canada. North america, as well. Now it is going to stay in the Northern Tier of states but look at these temperatures over the next several days. Fargo. The morning low. 14 below on thursday. Chicago, wednesday, thursday, friday well below zero. Nashville friday, youre 33. New york city by friday, the coldest air gets here at 11 degrees. And there is another storm system a very pregnant and. I wanted to keep in touch with savannah. And with that there is a storm system thats going to cause some major misery possibly for the Northern Tier states into the northeast by next weekend. We could be looking at another big airport problem and road problem. Look at the bright side we could be looking at a white christmas. Exactly nk you, al. Let us turn now to politics and some new controversies for president elect trump as he fills out his cabinet. This as he also opens up a new rift with the cia over a course that russia tried to interfere with the election. Kristen welker, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. President elect trump will meet with two contenders for Energy Secretary at trump tower today. Former Texas Governor rick perry and conservative West Virginia democrat senator joe manchin. Meanwhile, his likely pick for secretary of state, tillson. This morning, president elect donald trump poised for more cabinet related meetings at trump tower as he digs in blasting the u. S. Intelligence community after the Washington Post reported the cia thinks russia interfered in the election to help him win. I think it is ridiculous. I think it is just another excuse. I dont believe it. Reporter mr. Trump refusing to believe multiple agencies who have for months pointed the finger at russia for helping to hack Top Democrats during the 2016 race. They have no idea if it is russia or china or some body. It could be somebody sitting in a bed someplace. Reporter this echoed by his incoming chief of staff during a Fiery Exchange on meet the press. Does the president elect believe that russia was trying to muddyup and get involved in the election in 2016 . Number one, you dont know it. I dont know it. And theres been no conclusive or specific report to say otherwise. Reporter but not all republicans are lining up. Four top senators, including republicans john mccain and lindsey graham, calling for an investigation into the potential russian hacks. All of that highlighting an unprecedented rift between an incoming commander in chief and the intelligence agencies hes about to work with. Mr. Trump even questioning the need for daily briefings the president s receive. Hes only had a handful. I dont have to be told you know be with im, like, a smart person. I dont have to be told the same words and same thing every single day for the next eight years. Reporter this all comes as mr. Trump is on defense over his likely pick of secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, the ceo of exxonmobil. Tillerson has no diplomatic experience but has executed business deals around the world and has extensive ties to russia. Hes much more than a business executive. I mean he is a worldclass player. Reporter but tillerson could face a tough confirmation fight. Republican senator marco rubio tweeting, being a friend of vladimir is not an attribute i am hoping for from a secretary of state. Senator john mccain also weighing in on tillersons ties to russia. Is it a matter of concern . Certainly it should be a matter of concern. Reporter also looming large, questions about how mr. Trump will manage his vast Business Empire once in office. Im going to have nothing to do with it. Ill be honest with you, i dont care about it anymore. Reporter this week, mr. Trump will hold his First Press Conference since becoming president elect and will detail exactly how he plans to disentangle himself from his business dealings. He has indicated his Adult Children will maintain some control. Just moments ago, president elect trump officially announced hes nominating general john kelly as secretary of homeland security. Matt . Kristen, thanks very much. Kellyanne conway served as mr. Trumps campaign manager. Is now a Senior Advisor for the transition. Kellyanne, good to see you. Does mr. Trump think the Intelligence Community and cia in particular is lying about the russians impact on the election . Hes not said that. In fact, mr. Trump has said that he respects the Intelligence Community. In the specific case thats being discussed recently though, we dont have credible and complete evidence that there is a direct nexus between anything that russia did and Hillary Clintons loss in the election. Thats whats fuzzy and isnt it enough to know that the russians, according to many reports and the intelligence agencies agree that the russians deployed hackers to have some involvement, some impact on the election, whether it resulted in a victory or loss for hillary clinton. First of all, we dont believe we dont want intelligence interfering in our politics. But we also dont want politics interfering with our intelligence. Thats whats happening here. If you look at some of these articles that are being written, they want the reader db they want the viewer in fact, matt, to make that direct connection between interference and the election results. Of course, these are leaked, unsourced, nonsources, if you will. Thats what hearings are for and thats what investigations are for. When you talked about leaked and unsourced, mr. Trump had no problem during the campaign using that same leaked, unsourced information, negative information about the clinton campaign, against hillary clinton. Now he doesnt even seem to care where its a he coming from. He cares very much about our Intelligence Community and any information that they may divulge. Thats number one. Number two, you are seeing the fbi and cia dont even agree on what the conclusion is here. Thats very clear in the Washington Post article, very clear in the newsweek article from last night. In the case of those emails, we saw right in front of us what they said. But look. I do think there is something going on here, whether its the recount, its jim comeys fault, it is russian interference, it is a group of people weve never met. And the two things may be mutually exclusive. Both both of those things. But back to when you said he cares very deeply about this intelligence. He said it could be russia, it could be china, it could be some guy in new jersey. That doesnt seem to give me the sense he has the gravity. Indeed he does. He also understands the gravity and consequences of not having a greet relationship with russia now. We just simply dont. Thats why some of his secretary of state picks are people who are already involved in russia. The ultimate decision rests with president elect trump and he will make that announcement perhaps this week. Rex tillerson as head of exxon has dealt with russia over a number of years. I think oversees 70,000 employees, 300 billion. Thats important because we just cant have somebody go in there with no relation it adds to the perspective. Im glad you bring mr. Tillerson up. On top of these questions about the russians impact on the election and mr. Trumps own words in the past about Vladimir Putin and thinking he is a strong leader and liking his praise and now we have Rex Tillerson who has close ties to moscow, been honored by them, was against sanctions against russia. Is he perhaps the right guy but at the wrong time, kellyanne . Its the right job description. We want somebody who is already accustomed to negotiating. Because he is an oil man hes been in yemen, china and in russia and in the developing world and the middle east, certainly, matt. It is not like Vladimir Putin and Rex Tillerson are pounding down vodka at the local bar. But they deal with each other through business interests. Most importantly, anybody in president trumps cabinet, particularly the secretary of state, that person will advance the interests of the u. S. Everywhere and that person will advance the agenda of mr. Trump. When will we know . Perhaps this week. I think everybody should appreciate how much time and deliberation and reflection that he has spent on this very important pick, who will be the secretary of state. The world is a dangerous place. We dont have great relationship everywhere. Picking someone who will advance u. S. Interests and the trump doctrine, inkredzbcredibly impo. Not to be rushed. Thanks, kellyanne. The man who fatally shot former Saints Player William Smith has been convicted of manslaughter. He was found guilty in the april 9th shooting that killed will smith and wounded the players wife. His former teammate, deuce mcallister, says he knows there are still hard times ahead for smiths family. Just because there was a guilty and not guilty verdict doesnt mean that everything starts over know. Shell get up in the morning and her husband is not there. Kids will get up in the morning and their father is not there. Hayes could face up to 40 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for february 17th. Private vigil was held overnight at the pulse nightclub in orlando to mark six months since the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. A moment of silence was observed at 2 02 a. Camera shows mateen parking his car under a canopy shortly before 2 00 a. M. Police arrived minutes later after first reports of shots. Patrons run for their lives. The standoff lasted three hours before mateen was finally killed by police. Now to courtroom drama in florida where a woman is accused of hiring a hitman to kill her husband. Hidden camera video of a fake crime scene set up by police at the center of the case. Will jurors be able to see that tape . Is nbcs Kerry Sanders is in this West Palm Beach with more on this. Kerry, good morning. Reporter well, good morning. Lawyers will begin wrapping up their defense case later this morning. They argue that the Boynton Beach, Florida Police department overstepped its authority by creating this fake crime scene and producing a video, a video that they say was good television, all created, they say, simply for the Reality Tv Show cops. As you noted, it is now up to a judge to determine whether all of that video will be shown to the jury. It is the video the defendants lawyers dont want the jury to see. Im sorry to tell you, man, hes been killed. Reporter Boynton Beach Police Officers set up a fake crime scene telling her, accused of hiring a hitman, that her husband had just been murdered. The video posted on youtube by police the same day it was taken into 2009. Her lawyers say the police abused their power and only wanted to get sensational video for the tv show cops. Dipolitos Attorney Says she never intended to have her husband killed and Boynton Police set her up. Posting all of this footage for the world to see. Do you believe that was good Police Practices . Yes or no. I cant answer that. Reporter before the trial the judge threw out that video but the tape came up during defense questioning. Now prosecutors say that opened the door to play the video. The judge could make a ruling later today. Jurors have already seen this video of dipolito talking to anunder cover cop about killing her husband. We find the defendant guilty. Reporter in 2001 she was convicted of solicitation to commit first degree murder and sentenced to 20 years. But the decision was thrown out on appeal. This time around, dipolitos actions on video are once again at center of the case. It is based 100 on mrs. Dipolitos words, her actions, and her intent. Were going to ask this jury to disregard those videotapes that this world has seen because they are a direct byproduct of police corruption. Reporter this morning the defense is expected to call a Police Expert to the stand, and then dalia dipolito may take the stand. Shes considered all weekend whether she wants to do that. Kerry, thanks so much. Go to bed early or late . Late. Early. See this game . If you went to bed early you missed a great finish to sunday night football. New york giants hosting the dallas cowboys. Team with the best record in the nfl. Lets jump right to the third quarter. New york was down 73 until this happened. Thats eli manning finding Odell Beckham jr. He goes 61 yards for the touchdown.
