At st. Anthony school in the brookline section of washington, they are ready to get the papal party started. And even made their own pope francis hat. I would say i like him and i would want to talk to him sometime. I would say, i love him and i would say, bring me more toys, please. Reporter he is the pope, [ laughter ] reporter in fact, many here do consider francis something of a living saint. And a great role model as they build character. To see pope francis and to hear him so dedicated to the poor the vulnerable, this is were teaching our children. Our leader. Reporter about 20 students will be up early wednesday to greet francis as he leaves his dc home base, the Vatican Embassy. Others are invited to thursdays speech to the joint session of congress. It will be an interesting sight, the pope flanked by Democrat Joe Biden on one side, republican john boehner on the other. The political rivals both nominal catholics. You have people from two different parties who are card carrying catholics who believe that they want to follow the pope and the churchs teaching and i think in that way it shows that there are divisions but at the same time, Something Else can unite us believe thats the role that a holy father has in terms of bringing us together. You talk about excitement there. Its going to be like this throughout his entire visit, crowds cheering his every move. That fiat, he is a big environmentalists, well known for that but was also escorted by some heavily Armored Vehicles some chevy suburbs and vehicles like that, as well. Now lets talk about his full day of events that he is going to be resting up for tonight. He has a lot on the schedule beginning tomorrow in washington. Beginning in the day tomorrow, with a reception at the white house. 15,000 people expected. Plus an Oval Office Meeting with the president oneonone just the two men. After that the pontiff will join u. S. Bishops at the cathedral of saint matthew. Then he is off to the National Shrine of the immaculate conception, to canonize junipero serra, the founder of 9 california missions. One of the biggest security challenges ever for the nypd, crews were out installing security cameras today along Central Park West and tow trucks enforced the papal parking ban [ no audio ] and its side streets. Its a celebratory event for everybody else, for us this is a security event. One of the highest level. Secret service is actually the lead agency for providing security for the pope. Were in support with them and were pretty tightly coordinated on this. And barricades will also go up at the United Nations and around Madison Square garden. Now, in addition to increased security, major gridlock is expected in and around manhattan. Take a look at the places where the pope has his scheduled events. He will be at st. Patricks cathedral thursday evening, with a full schedule on friday beginning at the u. N. In the morning. He will address the general assembly. And its going to conclude with evening mass at Madison Square garden. You can imagine there will be frozen zones, street closures, parking bans, even possible Mass Transit Service shutdowns around the venues so be advised, be prepared, or as some people are sort of planning just dont come into manhattan on those days. Now, people in the tristate area are getting so excited. You can feel it. So exciting to see him arrive there at Andrews Air Force base, there was applause in the newsroom. How many popes have you seen or visited . Okay. Well, um, pope paul vi was the pope when i was a student in rome. Reporter the archbishops story about meeting Pope John Paul ii at his residence a favorite with the kids. Mother teresa came in with 18 of her sisters. Reporter what was your favorite story . When he started talking about Mother Teresa and how he met all the popes from the past. Reporter are you excited about this pope coming . Yes. In other headlines, for the first time ever, a new York City Police officer stood in open court and pleaded guilty to attempted murder of unarmed civilians. The officer admitted today that he opened fire on a car while he was off duty. Cbs 2s lou young has the new information from the courthouse in white plains. Reporter an admission of guilt without explanation. He says, i do, like a groom at his own wedding over and over again, the suspended new york city cop answering questions about whether he was pleading guilty to attempted murder and assault on two unarmed civilians. That unprovoked off duty drunken ambush 16 months ago leaving one man near death. Do you freely and voluntarily admit that you committed those offenses and you shot into that vehicle multiple times . I do. Reporter brendan cronins tightlipped plea followed months of negotiations. He initially claimed he blacked out after a day of Police Weapons training and heavy drinking. Unreleased security video shows him shooting into the car. The judge citing an otherwise unblemished history agreed to give him 9 years in prison. The victims watching from the Court Gallery not happy with that. I am sure that if i opened if i fired a weapon in a a police car, i would be doing much more than nine years. Week of freedom before he goes to jail in repeated encounters with their assailant at the courthouse since the shooting the victims said he never showed remorse not even today. Reporter cronin and the nypd are being sued by the victims for what they call a tolerated culture of alcohol abuse. With the guilty plea, cronin was immediately fired by the nypd. He had been suspended with pay since shortly after the shooting. A luxury car is involved in a costly crash on long island. Surveillance video shows sparks flying from a maserati just before it slammed into two stores. The crash happened last night in west islip. Police say the driver lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The car crashed through the front of the bagel store and a restaurant next door destroying them both. That guy came from there, okay, came missed that tree, come over the curb, and crashed into the building and ripped this whole thing down. No one was hurt in the businesses because both stores were closed. The 40yearold driver michael vin nettie wasnt seriously hurt either. So far no charges but police are investigating. Reporter lorries father has alzheimers disease and her mother another type of dementia. Now in full time care, both of her parents have frequent bouts of agitation. When people come in to help him with his showers or his daily care and stuff, he does get extremely agitated. She gets upset and agitated no matter what it is, the facts that they play the same music, whats there for dinner. Thats what makes caregiving so difficult when theres a violent or aggressive reaction by the patient. Reporter dr. Cummings from the Cleveland Clinic and co authors recruited 220 patients with alzheimers dementia and agitation. During a preliminary ten week trial, participants were randomly assigned to receive either a combination of dextromethorphan and quinn in a dean or a placebo. The combination had a substantial effect in reducing agitation and far greater than was seen in the placebo treated patients. Reporter the study in jama journal of the american medical association, showed the drug was safe, effective and a boon for caregivers. There was a reduction in the stress experienced for caregivers of the patients who were treated with the combination. Reporter although caring for her parents is sometimes overwhelming, laurie takes comfort in knowing they have lived full lives. Even though the two drug combination is not fda approved for alzheimers agitation, it is approved for and so it can be prescribed off label for alzheimers patients. Dr. Max gomez, cbs 2 news. When pope francis celebrates mass tomorrow at the National Shrine of the immaculate conception, he will sit on a custom made chair handcarved by a maryland carpenter. The wooden chair he will use friday night for the mass at Madison Square garden was created by immigrant day laborers in port chester, westchester county. And they will meet the pope on friday.
