Its now in a tow lot after police say a car head of him swerved and he slammed into it. His bike flew into the guardrail and the 29yearold catapulted over the barrier. I had the feeling i was going over and i just closed my eyes and just went with it. Reporter this video shows where he plummeted 50 feet from the bridge into the he started to panic. I started drowning and, you know, i calmed down and took the helmet off and made it over to a pillar and held on until help came. Reporter he said he refused to give up and held on to the pillar for 10 minutes thinking of his family the entire time. My mother died in a car accident. So i know it was going to be tough for my grandmother just to get the call that i was in an accident. So i kind of just really wanted to make it not only for myself but for my family. Reporter crews pulled him from the water and rushed him to the hospital. Montone said he saw this picture. Im happy to be alive. Reporter he expects to bike again in the future. What changes after this . I dont know. I guess a little more cautious. Reporter he says theres no chance of salvaging this bike but he is already planning to buy a new one and ride again. In rutherford, new jersey, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. And Rutherford Police say the cause of the crash is still under investigation. The police chief telling us he has never dealt with anything like this before. To a developing story tonight. A pilot practicing for the new york airshow in Orange County has died in a crash. The home built plane crashed after takeoff. Its registered as to a man in austin, texas . The man had a structural failure. The pilot the only one in the plane. The airshow is expected to go on as scheduled. Terrifying moments in westchester county. The front of a restaurant collapses right in the middle of lunch hour today. Cbs 2 first on the scene just moments after the facade crashing down on to the sidewalk. Seeing that damage its hard to believe nobody was hurt. Cbs 2s matt kozar reports. Well see more of that and hear how everybody did today. Matt. This could have been a very different story had people been outside eating when this overhang came crashing down. Utility crews on the scene right now. Restaurant. This disaster averted thanks to two women who heard the crack and sounded the alarm. Tonight we are learning more about how and when buildings in larchmont are inspected yeah. Reporter when the parapet came down. Cbs 2s lou young was in the area when it happened. He heard it and rushed over to the popular Mexican Restaurant and recorded this video as people watched from inside Tequila Sunrise a waiter searched the debris to see if no one was hurt. I saw the crack in the side of the building. Reporter when erin spotted there crack this afternoon she rushed to the building to get help. The restaurant. I told the bartender we came out and he saw it. And then i think the people who were sitting outside went in. They moved them in . Yeah. Probably saved their lives . Yeah. Reporter on their website, the owners of Tequila Sunrise wrote the employees are safe and thankfully there were no injuries. Firefighters say the building had a fire several years ago which damaged the roof. But they are also looking at whether the terra cotta overhang was too heavy. In terms of ongoing random inspections they are inspected by the Fire Department for safety inspections annually and i dont have the record right now when that was last performed for the building. Reporter Town Administrator justin detino says more thorough Building Inspections dont happen unless work being done requires a permit. Something like this a parapet inspection would not be generally a course of regular inspection unless was a person with a Building Permit for any kind of repairs and modifications. The cause of a partial house collapse in Staten Island is under investigation tonight. Chopper 2 flew over Mariners Harbor as firefighters inspected from an adjacent rooftop. The collapse happened just before 10 00 this morning at a construction site on vanpelt avenue. Nobody was hurt. Investigators say the work was being done without permits and a full stop work order has been issued. The wait is over for subway riders on the west side after billions of dollars and [ choking ] the 7 train will make its first stop at the new hudson yard station next month. Cbs 2s sonia rincon live at 34th and 11th with what commuters can expect on the new 7. Sonia. Reporter dana, it doesnt look like much but behind me is the new entrance to the 34th street station which opens on september 13. The 7 line extension took able to years to build and a couple more weeks and it will be ready. It was one of the last stops for Mike Bloomberg as mayor a year and a half ago. A visit to the unfinished 34th street hudson yard subway station that will serve the area his administration pushed to redevelop. Its a brandnew station with modern amenities and beautiful artwork. Reporter the mta Spokesman Says the extension cost nearly 2. 4 billion almost entirely funded by the city. And building a subway station in the 21st century means not just digging deep financially but physically under all the existing infrastructure. Its about 100 feet down so it will take a couple of minutes to get down by elevator or escalator. Reporter riders at grand strat cant wait to go west beyond times square. It will be a smooth transition from the metronorth to the 7th perfect for edwina from the bronx. Right now to get over to the west side, you take the shuttle and you are limited. So having this extend all the way to the 11th avenue is great. Reporter and theres a lot hang on 11th avenue other than the construction of new towers. Theres the javits center, the high line, the megabuses, and this brandnew park which will have another future entrance to the station. Christine chairs the Community Board here and says the neighborhood is thrilled to finally be getting subway service. Im sure lots of people on tenth avenue are going to migrate this way. Reporter and the excitement stretches to queens where justin of Long Island City cant wake to take the 7 to the new end of the line. To get to for example, the meatpacking district you want to go all the way west. Reporter still, there are some concerns from riders about how crowded the 7 already is. Its packed. All the time. Reporter now, one thing riders and residents said they would have liked to see is that additional subway station at 41st and tenth avenue part of the original plan. A tsa agent set to physical a judge tonight accused of sexually assaulting a College Student at laguardia airport. 40yearold Maxie Oquendo of manhattan facing charges. The tsa allegedly lured a 21 yearold Exchange Student from korea and assaulted her in a mens bathroom. The tsa fired him. They say that officers do not have the authority to conduct a secondary patdown outside a checkpoint area. Ten years ago today, the monster Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on new orleans. Almost a half Million People fled. Thousands of them came to new york and some never left. From the big easy to big apple, cbs 2s tony aiello reports on katrina, 10 years later. [ music ] my mother called me at 6 a. M. That sunday and said, pack your car or else im coming to get you. Were leaving. And i left with four people and a dog in my car. And it began a whirlwind adventure. Reporter it was not without at versety. Yvonne martin doesnt sugar coat how difficult it was to abandon her life in new orleans at age 23. Katrina impacted my life in some enormous ways. I lost my home. My family was dispersed throughout the country. I can only say that it was a twist of fate that led us here. My two sons and i we evacuated early, early that morning. Reporter this artist also fled to the big apple from the big easy worried that the devastated city was no place to raise his two sons. We realize that we couldnt go back home and school was starting and my sons had to start school. So we headed up to new york where i do have family. My sons have excelled and we are spreading the beautiful spirit of new orleans in everything we do. Reporter that infuses the public art he created in new york and new orleans. Yvonne martin meanwhile joined a group of Young Professionals who returned to the city to gauge its recovery. She may move back someday. But wouldnt give up her decade in new york for anything. The federal Emergency Management agency, fema, says more than 4,000 gulf coast residents sought refuge in new york after the storm and 10 years later they dont know how many permanently relocated. Lets zoom in tight so its not hidden behind the cbs 2. There you go. Currently, its 95 miles to the westsouthwest of Santo Domingo in the dominican republic. Its winds are 50 Miles Per Hour. Moving west, look at this, tough to build a hurricane if you have it moving through the caribbean at 21 Miles Per Hour. Im used to seeing these things moving in this part of the world maybe 3 to 7 Miles Per Hour. Thats how they churn up strength. 21 Miles Per Hour moving too fast and now we dont believe its going to be become a hurricane. Well watch it though. Its a big rainmaker more than a wind maker sort of hug the coastline of cuba as a tropical depression not even a Tropical Storm. Its about the water not the winds. As it hits the florida straits it balloons back up to a Tropical Storm. Lets say it crosses over with landfall around key west. But again, thats just the projection. You want to look at the cone. If nothing else its going to pump heat in next week and humidity, as well. It curves into the area right now into say the panhandle of florida.
