The inaugural times square bash in 1904 was for the official opening of the new york times. The famous crystal ball made its debut in 1908. The shining sphere 12 feet in diameter weighing more than 1,000 pounds and is covered in 2,688 Waterford Crystals. The celebration went dark though in 1942 for a wartime dimout of the city lights. Now to a developing story in dubai. Fire still burning its way hours after it first began. The drama unfolded in front of massive crowds who had gathered for the new years eve fireworks celebration there. Cbs 2s Tracee Carrasco here now with more. Reporter dozens of floors engulfed in flames but not even that was enough to stop dubais nearby fireworks celebration. Came up all of a sudden. It started lower than the 20th floor, probably 7th or 8th. The flames went up quite quickly the center of the building went all the way over the 50th floor. Reporter the fire quickly engulfed at least 20 stories of the 63story luxury hotel and residential building called the address downtown. Its absolutely surreal. I used to live on the 32nd floor and i have spent new years eve at the address. Its the place to be on a night like this. Reporter the bright orange flames lighting up the night sky mixed with fireworks as dubais new years eve celebration went off as planned at the nearby burj skyscraper. The fire broke out two hours before midnight when the Fireworks Show was set to begin. Burning debris could be seen raining down on the streets below and guests staying at the hotel were evacuated. At first we thought it was a small fire they could contain it. But then it quickly escalated and then were like we got to get out of here. Reporter the sprinklers and internal firefighting systems helped stop the spread of the fire. The area was packed with spectators celebrating and the mood changed when the fire started. All of a sudden saw the flames and everyone was focused running, you know, to kind of get a Better Vantage Point and then, um, right now its kind of a sense of silence in there. You dont hear anything. Reporter its hard to believe only 14 people were injured, although that number could change. Its not clear yet what caused this fire. Tracee carrasco, thank you. The new years holiday notorious for drunk driving. In an average year more than midnight and 6 a. M. On january 1 nationwide. Now a long island lawmaker want to mandate technology tragedies. Reporter that was glen ciano a Suffolk County cop killed by a drunk driver in 2009. His widow susan now supports a proposal to require antidwi technology in all cars made in the u. S. Sensors will measure your normal breathing and the touch of your fingertips and if your blood alcohol is above the legal limit the car wont start. Reporter it uses infrared light to detect drunk drivers. It will measure the alcohol in a drivers blood in less than a second. Reporter congresswoman rice says the prototype system uses the blood alcohol drivers. But it can be programmed for zero tolerance for drivers under the age of 21. Its going to keep drunk drivers off the road. And its going to save lives. Reporter rices bill provides 176 million to perfect the technology. But the American Beverage Institute is already lobbying against requiring it arguing moderate and social drinkers will be penalized while prices of new vehicles will be raised. The naysayers its going to cost too much, yes, how much would you pay to stop somebody you love from being killed . Reporter mothers against drunk driving promises to lead the fight to require the technology when congress reconvenes. Tony aiello, cbs 2 news. Congresswoman rice says if passed, the legislation would require the new technology in all vehicles within 10 years. The city of rochester, new york has canceled tonights fireworks following the arrest of a terror suspect. The citys police chief wants the move follows the arrest of 25yearold Emanuel Lutchman. Federal prosecutors say the excon was planning to attack a rochester bar and was arrested after buying knives and a machete. According to court documents, Emanuel Lutchman is a muslim convert who wanted to join isis. Governor cuomo says its a reminder of the potential danger. This fight against terrorism is front and center. I think it gets worse before it gets better. Good news is, were up to it. Investigators say lutchman has a history of Mental Health illness. A wake is under way tonight on long island for a new york Service Member killed in afghanistan. The body of Louis Bonacasa arrived in westhampton. His commander escorted bonacasa to the church. Gauntlet in afghanistan and louis refused to compromise the safety of his fellow warriors nor the future safety of his wife and daughter. That, people, is heroism. If it changes court well let you know but we could get a little snow but its been the warmest december that we have ever recorded and im not talking about squeezing out a first place finish. Okay . Now that all moves down because number one is now this degrees, i mean, come on, thats about 7 degrees warmer than the second place finish. Thats you dont normally see records broken like that. That gets shattered what happens with the temperatures . We are 48 degrees today. Friday 45. Saturday 42. Sunday 43. Thats cooler than what we have been. But look at this little dotted line. Thats the average temperature about 39 degrees. By monday, youre looking at 38 so monday and tuesday could be a little below average. The ball drop tonight 9 p. M. Its 42.
