In other news, a frightening afternoon on a queens street when a bullet barely misses two babies. The children were in the back fired and a bullet shattered the car window. It happened at 2 00 on beach 54th street in the edgemere section. The bullet pierced the front seat and the children were covered by shattered glass. Their grandmother was behind the wheel. We hear some gunshots and by the time i am ready to pull over the green light the glass. Babies in the back of the seat. Reporter the children were taken to the hospital to be checked out. Police say the shots would likely fired from the roof of a nearby building. New at 6 00 some are calling it a big leap backwards for a sprawling Community College. We have learned that the accreditation of Nassau Community college may be in jeopardy. Cbs 2s Carolyn Gusoff has the story. Reporter Nassau Community college new yorks biggest Community College campus with 22,000 students some now concerned about a preliminary report card that could flunk their school. Its unbelievable. You know, im a bit worried. Its crazy. Transfer the classes im taking now, basically paying for nothing. Reporter faculty members say a recent accreditation review found the college not in compliance in 7 of 14 essential standards. It is very, very serious. Reporter the middle States Commission cites seven fail use including planning, resources, leadership, administration and integrity. Faculty quick to point out, none of them have to do with teaching. They have long criticized administration for a lack of transparency. This administration is unable to articulate a vision that we can all rally behind and support to move this college forward. Reporter the college has been in leadership limbo for 6 years without a permanent president. The Replacement Process fraught with allegations of political pay patronage. We have been in a crisis right now as an institution. Reporter in this email, the College Interim President quickly and if we wish to maintain our accreditation, dramatically. Adding, actions will impact the future success if not existence of this college. Dr. Dolan tells cbs 2 the email was privileged and confidential. About a nonfinal matter. Loss of accreditation would cut grants and Financial Aid and could jeopardize degrees. Faculty leaders assure students that they will continue to get a quality affordable education and they are confident that the middle States Commission will give the school a chance to respond and get back on its feet. At Nassau Community college, Carolyn Gusoff cbs 2 news. Commission on Higher Education says colleges are first given a warning and then up to two years to correct deficiencies. June. A long island father is being held on a Million Dollars bond tonight. He is accused of sexually abusing his own foster children. Children came forward. Investigators say it happened inside the suspects home on blue ridge way in ridge. The d. A. Says mugaburu also abused the family dog and threatened the children not to tell. He is accused of controlling them with beatings and two meals a day. Authorities believe there could be more victims. The defendant had fostered 140 children ranging in age for the most part from 8 years of age to 14 years of age, all of them being boys. His defense attorney denies mugaburu was abusive calling him a caring father. The group that placed the boys with the man is cooperating with the investigation. There is alarm about weapons in the citys Public Schools after another child allegedly brought a loaded gun to class. Security was tight outside York Early College academy in jamaica, queens. A 15yearold student is allegedly brought a gun to the school yesterday. And an 11yearold is accused of bringing a weapon to another Jamaica School on tuesday. The Group Families for Excellent Schools supports charter schools. It says theres been a 25 spike in weapons confiscated in Public Schools. They are a part of a shocking surge of violence that continues to threaten our childrens safety. I feel unsafe that there could be another person with a gun coming to school. The Education Department says it works with police to address incidents swiftly. The future remains uncertain for one of the citys least loved landmarks. That would be the Port Authority bus terminal. It will soon be obsolete. So we sent cbs 2s sonia rincon to ask governor christie about his thoughts on a replacement building. Reporter the need for a new Port Authority building is 65 years old. I made that clear to the Port Authority commissioner. Reporter we asked had about where to put it . I dont have an opinion about where it should be. I think experts should determine that. Reporter the proposed location is right behind the existing terminal but theres also been talk among Port Authority commissioners of building a transit hub in new jersey where commuters would be diverted to trains to the city. That could mean another future for this valuable manhattan real estate. But with the path and new Jersey Transit at capacity and no plan to extend Subway Service across the hudson, new Jersey State Senate majority leader Loretta Weinberg says reporter commuters agreed. This person from West New York doesnt want to transfer to a train. Thats too much hassle. I rather go on the bus one thing. The beat could one day help save a life. Travelers in several cities can now teach themselves cpr at an airport kiosk. Thats how College Senior matt learned the skill last year during a layover and practiced at the kiosk until he got a i never thought i would need to use cpr that i learned. No one ever really does but im glad i knew it. Reporter two days later a fellow student was hit by lightning at the university of dayton. My heart had stopped. I wasnt breathing. They said i had blood coming out of my mouth. Matt said he could feel the burns, smell the burns. Reporter matt saw ferguson on the ground and performed cpr until paramedics arrived. More than 20 of cardiac arrests happen in public places. And experts say the chances of survival are much higher if a bystander administers cpr before medics arrive. Most people are afraid to do cpr but its very easy. Youre going to put those two hands in the center of the chest, push hard and fast. Reporter the machine uses a video and mannequin to teach chest compressions. After months of rehab, ferguson has recovered and graduated.
