Reporter the victim had checked in here just yesterday has body found with a thin wire around his neck. The room appeared to be in disarray as if a struggle ensued. Reporter a Police Source telling cbs 2 a roommate now missing is a possible suspect, the man seen washing blood off his hands in a shared bathroom down the hall. Our hearts go out to the family of the victim here. Reporter the citys homeless shelter is a flashpoint for urban dread in recent months. A former teacher murdered in east harlem shelter in january. Just this week, the city announced the results of a review to improve Shelter Services including better security. The nypd is conducting a review of all security so upgrade security in the city shelter system. Reporter the department of Homeless Services says at the time of the killing here there was one supervisor, five dhs peace officers, and 18 private Contract Security guards. And police say there have also been two felony assaults in the bellevue homeless shelter this year. Some new information tonight on a man found murdered in his Upper East Side apartment. Cbs 2s Scott Rapoport live in the newsroom with the story. Scott. Reporter good evening. Police tell us they now have a person of interest in the case a 60yearold man currently in custody in indiana. He is being eyed for the murder of Christopher Cooley in march. He was being treated for cancer found dead inside this Upper East Side building. His body badly decomposed. The coroner ruled it a homicide. Turns out, the person of interest in the case was day cooleys body was found. But not in connection with the case. Nypd arrested the man at the request of indiana authorities, who wanted him for an unspecified financial swindle and he was extradited back to indiana. While there, nypd found the mans fingerprints inside Christopher Cooleys apartment. Cops tell us they believe the indiana man also suffered from cancer and befriended cooley during Cancer Treatments and may have been stealing money from him. The person of interest is not charged with cooleys murder but remains in jail in indiana while nypd cops are building their case. In the newsroom tonight, Scott Rapoport, cbs 2 news.
