Gold is live at the airport this morning. Reporter a much different scene at La Guardia Airport this morning. Take a look, no unusual traffic. Cleared out. Just a few hours ago there were complete chaos missed their flights as a result. Now, this morning we have talked to a few passengers, they are back at the airport trying to catch new flights. As you can imagine, they are outraged. Chopper 2 flew over La Guardia Airport last night and captured the gridlock on the side streets leading in and out of the terminals along with the Grand Central parkway. Hundreds of cars backed up for miles sitting at a standstill. Pilot joe beerman describes the chaos. The traffic at la guardia is just a complete mess. Its a combination of Traffic Control from Port Authority and nypd. The problem started around 6 00 p. M. When many delayed flights resumed following the weekend blizzard. Passengers flooded the area. This along commute made matters worse and people were stuck for up to five hours. Driving out of the airport was impossible as well. Hundreds waiting for rides at la guardia gave up and you can see them walking away from the terminals. Some sitting in the mess recorded what they had to deal with. Weve been stranded at La Guardia Airport for the last 4 hours. We dropped off raul at around 6 30 and its 10 21 and we still cant get out. He took off and landed already. Hes home. A Port Authority spokesperson blamed the jam on a number of factors, congestion on the Grand Central parkway along with a car fire earlier in the day and a rush of passengers arriving and leaving stormdelayed flights. The nypd said la guardia and Port Authority wasnt prepared for the crowds and didnt plan ahead for Traffic Control. Passengers just need assurance this wont happen again. Reporter definitely a lot of frustration over what happened here last night. We did just check the flight board inside and most of the flights are on schedule. So far two delays and one cancelation. On the long beach, hempstead its suspended but lirr is planning to resume service by 5 00. So fingers crossed for that. Alternate side parking rules is suspended until monday. Elise finch is live with more. Elise. Reporter good morning to you both. Were here on 68th and 80th. Theres still a mountain of snow. We had a tremendous amount of snowfall in the tristate area. Its still around. However, as you take a look at 68th street, this is one of the streets where people were complaining they werent necessarily able to get down the street as easily as they needed to. Weve seen two plows and a salt spreader come down the street clearing it again. Of course that means some people are plowed in a little bit. Still, this street is looking yesterday. Im sure some people will be very pleased because yesterday they were anything but. Theyre spinning their vehicles and sick of it. City plow. Horrendous. They havent passed by to plow and its been already two days. Its horrible. Its ridiculous. This is the only street in queens thats like this. Not exactly. Sunday night our live truck got stuck near 69th and 76th street. Monday night vehicles still going nowhere at the same location. The mayor visited queens and heard firsthand from residents who feel the city has left them out of in the cold. Help. Help. Dont forget us. Life is not back to normal here in wood haven or ozone park or Richmond Hill or so many other neighborhoods in queen 2. 5 feet of snow. Said help is on the way. Storm. 2 inches more would have been the greatest snowfall in the history in north city in the last century and the half. The mayor said too many people are putting snow from their cars back on to the street. You take 27 inches of snow off cars and you will block a street. The mayor understands that its not getting done. Its very aggravating. Reporter i think that when people wake up this morning and they see the flurry of activity when i tell you youve seen dozens of city trucks, plows and salters and then sanitation cars following them to make sure things are getting done. Thank you so much. Lirr commuters are hope ing ing the mta comes through this morning a day after waiting hours for trains and in some cases for trains that never came. As of this morning as you mentioned the whole system is supposed to be back up and running including five running since saturday and that includes nassau boulevard here on the hempstead line. Long Island Railroad riders are gearing up today for what commute. This was the scene last night at penn station as people crowded on the trains, capping off a tough day of travel for thousands that started in the morning. I didnt get to work until 10 00 because i had to take the subway. It took me almost 3 hours this morning. It took me 2 hours and 25 minutes for a normal 40minute trip. The mta said thousands of lirr and state workers have cleared the tracks and made repairs to get the rest of the snow bound system back up and running for this morning. The railroad sustained what the governor called significant damage in the blizzard. The mta said 7 of 12 branches would be back by 5 00 a. M. Yesterday but it scaled back expectations after switches froze over night. Every email i got said canceled, canceled, canceled. Then they said after 7 00 and then 7 30. Thousands of people stood confused on crowded platforms in the morning trying to squeeze into delayed trains, shuttled from stations where training werent running at all. Governor cuomo said it could have been smoother. We had trouble and we knew there would be trouble on some of the lines.
