But, first, tragedy in the bronx after fire claims the lives of two young sisters. Now police are questioning whether the children were left alone when the flames broke out. Cbs 2s Janelle Burrell has more now from clairmont. Reporter it was inside this charred, gutted thirdfloor apartment in the butler houses where neighbors first spotted the fire just before 7 00 p. M. Wednesday, the toddler sisters were trapped, surrounded by flames and thick smoke. So as we looked out, we saw the a. C. , it burst into flames right here out the window. Reporter despite their best effort, the conditions made it im efforts, the conditions made it impossible to reach 2 yearold an 18yearold aman a jabbi we heard kids crying, but it was too black, we couldnt breathe. Reporter the family next door couldnt escape either, putting wet towels underneath their door until help arrived. When i opened the door, i saw a whole bunch of black smoke and i closed the door back. Reporter firefighters eventually breaking windows to the babies both unconscious and in grave condition. I seen the firemen bringing the kids out and they was burnt over their body. Reporter witnesses say it appears there werent any adults inside of the apartment at the time, pointing out this woman in the ambulance who they say came running out of this laundromat across webster avenue. Fdny Officials Say theyre now looking into whether the children were left unattended and whether proper safeguards were in place. Checking to see if theres any smoke detectors in the apartment and preliminariarily we didnt see any smoke detectors. Reporter now, back live, you can see that fire officials have now boarded up the windows of that apartment. The cause still under investigation this morning, but we can tell you police at this hour are questioning the mother of those two little girls to determine whether or not those girls were left alone. Taking a look outside at the George Washington bridge there, we go, we can see that it is moving well. Of course its early. I just want to remind you that even though were moving well inbound and outbound, we are going to have some closures later this morning. No delays, though, at lincoln or hundreds. A brooklyn man is set to be arraigned today on charges he tried to abduct an 11year old girl. Hall was taken into cuff yesterday. He is facing numerous charges, including attempted sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. Some residents say falling concrete from the van wyck expressway is turning a parking lot into a danger zone. Some people discovered this slab of concrete weighing about 200 pounds tuesday in flushing meadows. The lot sits under the expressway near rec center. Residents say falling debris is a big problem. Some wet weather, but nothing like that. This huge ridge of High Pressure, look at the size of that thing, locking the wet weather to the south, deflecting another system coming in from the north and west. So, again, the futurecast, therell be some passing clouds. That about it. Thursday into friday, into saturday, something trying to back in . Nah, i dont think that happens. It does keep parts of long island with a little bit more cloud cover, a little cooler than we will be in the city. But in the city and then to the north and west weve got some real nice numbers, 60 or thereabouts today, low 60s tomorrow. Mid60s possible saturday. Remember, that dividing line more pronounced into the weekend. Cooler for the coast, but you see the 70s sunday into monday, chance of rain stays in the forecast or tuesday. In bridgewater this morning, very sadly, we have an accident involving a pedestrian. It has one lane blocked on route 287. That is northbound at exit 12. A brooklyn judge has postponed todays scheduled sentencing of former np npped officer peter liang. He was convicted of manslaughter in the murder of akye girly. Liangs lawyer says the verdict should be thrown out because a juror lied about his fathers criminal history. Vargas will be questioned today by prosecutors. Girlys family will rally outside the supreme court. Thousands of fast food workers are holding a national they want a 15 an hour minimum wage all across the country. In new york the minimum wage will gradually rise to 15. The fast food workers will be joined in their protests by Striking Verizon workers. New york state will soon end its ban on professional mixed martial arts. Governor cuomo signs legislation today to put the state Athletic Commission in charge of the sport. The law takes effect in four months. Now for your money watch, stock futures are trending down today. On wall street yesterday stocks ended the day up across the board. The dow gains 187 points. Nasdaq was up 75, the s p rose over 20 yesterday. The takata airbag inflater recall could soon get much bigger. The national Highway Safety Traffic Administration says there are about 85 million takata airbag inflators in cars and trucks that havent been recalled. Thats in addition to the nearly 29 million inflators already slated for replacement in what has become the largest nations history. The inflators can implode with too much force and shoot passengers. All of the the inflators would have to be recalled if takata cant prove that theyre actually safe. The mayor hires a lawyer in the corruption investigation into the nypd claims another victim. Cbs 2 political reporter Marsha Kramer has the latest on the nypd scandal. Reporter he was former Police Commissioner bernie kerricks lawyer in his federal fraud case. Now attorney barry burk is representing mayor de blasio as the feds probe how he raised campaign funds. The mayor disclosing that he asked burk to represent his 2013 campaign and reach out to the u. S. Attorneys office, and offer any assistance we can provide. Theyll have to know were happy to work with them in any way that would be helpful. Reporter the mayor apparently sought burks help after cbs 2 report the feds are questioning members of the Real Estate Industry about donations solicited by team de blasio, including former Campaign Treasurer ross offinger. The mayor said he wanted burk to find out whats going on since the feds havent called him. Any kind. Reporter the fundraising municipal corruption investigation centered on two businessmen with ties to the mayor and their interaction with highranking members of the nypd. Some 20 members of the department have reportedly been questioned by the fbi, including deputy chief andrew cappell, executive officer patrol borough manhattan who became the latest highranking commander to fall victim. Cappell was transferred to a desk job. Last week commissioner bratton removed four of his most senior commanders from their post. Two lost their guns and badges, as did a sixth cop, a detective who took the fifth before the grand jury.
