And of the Jacksonville the mayor Lenny Curry says residents should get ready for the words only take what you need it when you're buying supplies so that all of our residents have an opportunity to get what they need in the event that we go through this storm and so forecasters are now saying that storm could be the worst to hit Florida in decades but that's not stopping. You guys are having for some fun but that dire warning won't stop folks from partying during the storm over get this that lose and. For better or worse many folks will be throwing hurricane parties the past time during Dorian especially because a storm of washing out Liberty plans not vetoing a hurricane party yourself or attending one here's some food for thought make sure to have a grill and propane ready and clean out your perishable items from fridge and freezer that should make for some good eats in plus you don't have to waste all that to get the power goes out you can also put hurricane supplies that are as radios flashlights and generators obviously keep the party indoors and don't drink too much in case of an emergency brake you don't use 96.5 w. As hurricane Dorian makes its way towards Florida we're going in-depth on preparation Dorian's track and how it will impact your neighborhood listen tomorrow at 3 pm as we give you a chance to go One on One with w f t V's meteorologist Brian shield before during and after hurricane News 96.5 w Didio if you own a gun you have a full time responsibility when you aren't using it to be sure it can get into the Moreno alongside Kevin refuse Katrina scales Jeanne Wexler the entire afternoon news crew is here to help you get prepared get educated and stay safe of what could be a monster storm Jacki O'Brian is in the traffic center will be keeping you updated on traffic and the current weather as we always do as well as hurricane Dorian of course Chase is our producer this afternoon we have a lot going on here a lot of phone calls a lot of questions a lot of comments and I know for those of you that have lived here for some time if you are a veteran Floridians veteran Floridian you know what you're doing you've been through this before and you know you may be getting tired of hearing about it already and the storm hasn't even arrived yet but there are a lot of folks that have will be experiencing their 1st hurricane maybe only their 2nd hurricane and a lot of people that are veterans of hurricanes still have a lot of problems a lot of questions I should say so hurricane Dorian now forecast to slam into Florida's east coast as a possible Category 4 storm come Monday morning severe weather center and meteorologist Cassandra Kearney will be joining us in a few minutes to break it all down will be opening up the phone lines as we always do during emergencies and big stories don't forget if you are new to News 96.5 w. D.b.o. We are your radio station this is what we do here we are all one community if you're looking for water. And you find a place that has water you can call in let everybody else know where the water is if you're looking for tarps you can call in when you find them let everybody else know where the tarps are if you have suggestions we've been taking hurricane preparedness suggestions and tips on the open mike for the last couple of days already lot of great suggestions a lot of great advice we'll be playing those throughout the course of the show if you do not yet have the news that a 6.5 w d b o app for some reason right now would be the time to download it it is in the App Store or Google Play News 96.5 w d b o download it turn the notifications on we are here for you from now until Dorian passes by and everything will hopefully get back to normal so as you know there is still a lot of uncertainty a very very large cone of uncertainty if you have lived in Florida for some time if you have been through hurricanes before you certainly know about the cone of uncertainty and it is a very wide cone of uncertainty as of now Dorian could hit Miami Dorian could hit Jacksonville Dorian could hit Titusville the space coast anywhere in between Dorian could perhaps you know make a sharp turn to the right go up the coast maybe even stay beneath the Florida peninsula and move into the Gulf so we are still at a point where anything could happen but the time for waiting and watching has come to an end it is absolutely wise to make all your full preparations for Hurricane Dorian Now if you have not already done so if you have been out of making your preparations you know Home Depot and Lowes are crowded you know the Wal-Mart's a crowded Publix when Dixie everywhere is crowded places of running out of water places are running out of tarps places are running out of wood so again if you're out and about and you getting supplies. It's also a time to be nice to each other this is a time where we need to join together and take care of each other and. Each other so if you if you're at a store and they just got a truckload of water let us know if you're looking for would somebody looking for wood and you know where it is let us know tarps except for a batteries anything like that you let us know so we can let everyone else know Governor Rhonda Santos House held a news conference a little bit earlier this afternoon he was in provided County will play back what the governor had to say he will be making another statement. Probably next hour and I believe he's going to be making his way to Jacksonville we heard from former Governor Rick Scott now senator he has issued some words of wisdom for Florida and preparations as well and also as I mentioned Severe Weather Center 9 meteorologist Cassandra Criminy will be joining us in a moment she's going to tell us exactly what the exactly what's going on with Hurricane Dorian now where it is how fast it's moving what we can expect Cassandra are you with us I am here all right great good afternoon. Happy hurricane party. Here you have a nice day I mean here we go again you know whereas this is the very beginning of what's going to be some very long days for all of us we are here to serve the community keep everybody informed and safe we appreciate you joining us the Santa noon so tell us the very latest on Dorian and what we can expect in the next few days all right so I'm going to give you just the stats of the store where we're at now this storm systems to the north of Puerto Rico it's got kind of a big backend to it so it's dumping more rain now on the island of Puerto Rico than they really saw when the center of the storm moved across it but what it is expected to do is lift to the north and to the north and west and that's the open waters north of the Bahamas very warm water and that allows for the storm to strengthen quite a bit and that's what we're expecting right now the winds out of the storm says about 85 miles per hour moving towards the northwest at 13 miles per hour but with the fuel. The warm water the slow progression of the storm system we're anticipating this to turn into a major hurricane as early as Friday that means putting it into a category 3 status as it gets closer to the Bahamas we're looking at the time you know that Saturday and into Sunday and potentially getting close to the Florida Panhandle actually the Florida peninsula as we get into Sunday and into Monday and like you were mentioning before the storm system is expected as of right now to reach a Category 4 status or expecting very strong winds out of this but there is so much uncertainty with a store more than other storms that we really folks forecasted with and from Jacksonville all the way down to the Keys we all should be watching this storm system very closely over the next couple of days and I you know I just put a tweet out the one good thing with this storm system you know if we want to talk about glass half full is time we've been watching it for a long time and we've been kind of in its sights for this whole week so tomorrow and into Saturday is really if you haven't started planning you're going to want to put your hurricane preparedness plan into action really by Saturday evening especially if you live along the coastline and we're talking Titusville up through New Smyrna Daytona Beach all the way down to Vieira and even again extending further southward you're going to want to be done at least by Saturday evening that's talking about boarded up shutters all of that done and ready to rock and roll as we head into this weekend we're going to be watching this very closely and Tom and I were discussion discussing that really over the next couple of days there's not a whole lot to hinder it's strengthening so getting up to a Category 3 and that category 4 that's most likely going to happen the big difference that we're going to see with this storm system is kind of the placement and the timing it's slowed down a little bit on which East meets model run we've seen it tack back just a bit but then also the placement how we talked about being in parts of southern Georgia to Jacksonville all the way down to the Keys. That's going to be really will be honing in on the location over the next 24 to 36 hours if you are just tuning in to news that is $6.00 w. D.b.o. It is it s. a Special hurricane Dorian edition of our land those evening news kicking things off early here for you to get you updated inform to help you and your family get prepared and stay safe speaking with severe weather center and meteorologist Cassandra Criminy Cassandra for folks that don't know the Safford I believe it's the Safford Simpson Scale a Category 3 storm would be what mile per hour winds we're talking about getting over 100 miles per hour I believe $135.00 is when we're getting into category major catarrh major hurricane strength excuse me and that's what we're expecting as we get here closer to central Florida winds are going to be up there if you're tune if you've tuned into Brian shields or Tom Terry really all week long we've been talking about timing of some impacts and we've kind of been holding off on it's because of just the uncertainty but we're kind of starting to filter a little bit closer so what we're talking about is 100 over 130 mile hour winds is when we start to get outside of that category 3 hurricane we're anticipating winds closer to 135 when it makes landfall that puts it in the category 4 strength for us so I guess to answer your question if we talk about Category 3 about 111-2130 mph or winds Category 4 about 131 to 155 mile per hour winds which really when you slice that cake 111-2155 that is strong no matter how you slice it oh yeah I mean without a doubt you would think there's a big you know you would think there's a there's a real big difference between 111 and 140 but either way that's very very powerful and of course you're talking about you know where the storm hits maybe 130140 mile per hour winds. If where 203050 miles away from where the storm hits we're still going to see significant wind and wind damage Unfortunately I often have this conversation with Tom Terry that we the all of the technology that you have over there in the meteorology call center in the Weather Center you know it's a blessing and kind of a curse I mean it's really it's a blessing but the fact that you can track the storms so far in advance now is fantastic but it also makes for days and days and days of anticipation into all the storm finally gets here right yeah well you know it's days and days of anticipation but it's also I think now days and days where we can plan ahead just the fact that you're not caught off guard with a major hurricane crashing into your coastline there is that it makes for some stressful days I think for for you and I and the rest of the weather team and the rest of the broadcasting team but for for people at home trying to make plans and just to to be safe for their families for their their parents who may be here retired you know when we talk about hurricanes moving into central Florida we have to think about all that people who have mobility issues the elderly the young you know I have a baby at home and I can't but you know I have to think about we know what's not going right happen but right you know you have things to plan for so I do think that the fact that we have this technology now it is a blessing but it is also like you said it can be a curse and we also know especially here in the Orlando metro I mean there are so many people that are new to the area that will be experiencing a hurricane for the 1st time so you know you always get the NATO Floridians or the veteran Floridians Assaad been through this storm I've been through that storm I know what I'm doing but those folks have to remember that there are so many new folks that don't know what they're doing and don't know exactly what they need and that's why we do what we do Cassandra thank you so much we'll talk to you again in little bit later in the hour. More than a severe weather center 9 meteorologist Cassandra Criminy she will be keeping us updated throughout the day throughout tomorrow I will also have a special segment tomorrow with Brian shields in studio taking your questions and as I mentioned we'll be here covering Hurricane Dorian for as long as it takes we're going to take a quick break 844-220-0965 that is the number you have a question you have a concern you have a comment you have advice for people you know where there are supplies 84422009658442200965 it's a special extended edition of Orlando's evening ne
