How do you do Linda Good evening welcome to the Jimbo had a job from Westwood One radio we were at 186650 Jimbo 186-650-5462 extension 61 line 5 is a gentle hand and show dot com You can follow me on Twitter at Jimbo talks as we continue our discussion with Seth Benson president co-founder of g.d.p. Advisors dot com author of the book The cure for clover crop publishing subtitle a blueprint for solving America's health care crisis and let's talk to Martin who is in Atlanta Good evening Barton Hey thanks for having me on yesterday. Yes So I've always wondered about so say for instance you're covered yourself. I'm covered as a disabled veteran. Your health care but I also work. I also work for another company offers company insurance but you know I never understood quite you know I can take insurance out of myself and nobody else but you can't take out insurance on a spouse like your wife unless you also have the entrance I'm wondering you know that's kind of seems odd to me you know that I can't have it on my spouse. You know and laid myself out so so much more portable. Well that would depend I guess on where you're getting the insurance and that's the type of coverage would it not set Denson it would the most in Bill and I believe what Marvin is referring to is that employer based plans most of those employer based plans have a contingency in them that says that the employee has to be covered in order for the spouses to be covered now that you know there's no federal law that states that nor is there any state based law that states that at least not to my knowledge that's really more of a construct of the way that the insurance companies have structured the policies in the employer market and in large part it to Rick it's to make sure we don't have adverse selection at least that's what the insurance companies intent is to make sure that employees who may only want to get a job or cover their spouse who may be unhealthy or child for that matter don't simply do that the idea of insurance being solvent is the law of large numbers they need more people to enroll and so by requiring employees to enroll they interpret in order for the spouse to enroll they kind of somewhat guarantee themselves those numbers not thoughts violent. Can it get that but in a lot of cases where you have like say that they will bats or something and that have them taking their wife and they would at least gain you know a member they they won't cover themselves and their wives on the policy don't aspire them a policy of taste their bomb of care or. You know like out of pocket or some other type of shared type system so they don't really gain anybody because you know if you're going to tell me that to cover myself and all the same policy numbers and that then I would just search out for a policy just for my wife somewhere else I don't see how they have it benefits them . Yeah and I would actually agree with you more on that because I would say that that your your situation is somewhat unique and when you're thinking about the insurance industry and the whole though we have to understand it's fairly rigid and some of the underwriting structures by which the insurance companies operate are antiquated matter of fact when we advise many of our clients especially those that are self funding their plans many employers will help on that we'll talk to them about loosening some of the general restrictions such add spouse only coverage or child dependent only a coverage that quite frankly they can do there's nothing that restricts them from able to do that all right good luck to bargain and we appreciate your thoughts very much 186650 Jimbo our number 186-650-5462 extension 61 the little head of Joe the talk with Seth debts and president and co-founder of g.d.p. Advisors on line a g.d.p. Advisors dot com What do you do at g.d.p. Advisors so we're a health care analytics and risk management consulting firm we will advise everyone from individual employee or individual to employers we are our primary business model is good by large corporations and the management of the health care supply chain I think that's all the time health care is actually comprised of 4 components of the health care supply chain and our job at g.d.p. And Budget is to manage those things well a lot of times employers simply just buy insurance and don't think about the actual driving cost of health care what we do is we manage the cost of health care What do we do about health care 186650 Jimbo is our number 186-650-5462 extension 6 as we talked with said dense of the author of the book The Cure globe publishing one thing about an insurance plan I guess is the fact that it has to have enough healthy people in it so that there is enough money around. To take care of the sick people right but the better the general thought process the main health insurance is really more over the last century and really over the last 2 decades I mean the original health insurance policies in the United States were really formed in Texas a group of nurses in the early 1900 they got together to share resources for when one of them had a baby. That was really the original health insurance plan and it morphed into what is Blue Cross Blue Shield today but what has happened in the last really decade to decade insurance companies that really become more finance company they're financing health care and that in large part was the result of the Affordable Care Act where in prior to that insurance companies were in conflict with the health care system insurance company didn't want to pay claims health care systems obviously were profiteering up of them and so what happened with that to the Affordable Care Act The insurance company aligned themselves with the health care system recognizing that they needed costs to go up to generate a higher return to their shareholders and add to the kind of the Affordable Care Act The average publicly traded health insurance company had Think Stock prices increased over 400 percent Wow 186650 Jimbo 18665054626 there was a survey taken of Olympic athletes few years back and they were offered a hypothetical devil's bargain let's assume that we could guarantee you a gold medal in the particular sport for which you have striven so hard these many many years and then sacrifice virtually all else in pursuit of that goal and all we ask in exchange for that gold medal is the last 10 years of your life you have to lock 10 years off whatever your life span is going to be and you know over 90 percent of those athletes said hey no problem. Because if you're young and healthy you're going to live forever and that mindset I think is part of what's at work here there are a lot of people who figure you know I want you to sure it's for I'm I'm young I'm healthy. I don't have to worry about that I guess they overlook the fact that the dread diseases don't overlook the young and the healthy or walking in front of a bus that could have been they have a body as well but it is that I think to a certain extent that mindset that we're talking about here why do I need health insurance for well because you never know well that's exactly right unfortunately with the skyrocketing cost of health insurance our younger population looking at it in the cost component and saying well what is the quality of life I'm losing out on because I'm buying a product that quite frankly given the right of deductibles and co-insurance that many Americans and young Americans in particular think they could never used anyway because they couldn't afford the deductible to actually act that the plan and therein lies the challenge of how our current system is structured and operates from an insurance 1st perspective it shouldn't be about insurance 1st it should be about understanding health care costs 1st and driving those down if we do in turn health insurance premiums would go down as well this is a story goes back a few years but it's very instructive it was the case of Danny Williams 60 years of age of St John's Newfoundland Canada who decided to come to the u.s. For heart surgery now Danny Williams wasn't just any Canadian he was the premier of Canada's eastern most province so an American parlance he would have been governor Danny Williams And this of course created quite a stir at the time that a prominent Canadian to get the procedure he wanted came to the us for heart surgery it was an interesting story then and it still is interesting story today obviously. Yeah and we think that more and more where many Canadians will come over to the u.s. The net can be for a very a multitude of reasons one is maybe they don't qualify for the coverage or haven't gotten approved for the coverage yet I mentioned a list that commonly referred to in many social life countries including Canada and it is something that prevents people from getting the care that they want and so that is the reason the kind of you know I think another reason it we actually have a phenomenal healthcare system in the United States and some of the best providers and surgeons and facility than so many prominent people from other countries will come to the United States because of the quality and outcomes that they receive. Because they was one more segment I want to ask you some more about solutions that you propose a good set of Rob d.p. Advisors dot com The author of The Cure from Clover crop publishing a blueprint for solving America's health care crisis and let's go to Frank who calls that from Cumberland Maryland tonight on the bill having you know good evening Frank good evening Mr Tucker and I can remember back to the night late 194-7150. I spoke to health care worker then and she told me that the only people had to worry about health care where the middle class because the wealthy people could afford it and the poor people got it for free it was a lot like getting a haircut in those days if you can afford a haircut you want to if you were living the Barry for example the apprentice barbers would cut your hair for free just for practice and I think that Dad and I guess it was good for doctors to have we really improved over the late 1940 s. Where charity was done for practically everyone except for a few specialists who could turn it down they want to. Yeah Frank you know unfortunately no I mean I think that you could easily fast forward today and say to the same thing really apply lower income folks or qualify for things like Medicaid or subsidize of the Affordable Care Act higher income folks obviously have the money to afford today's health care system but it is that I call it oftentimes the terrible middle it that terrible middle class who find themselves in a terrible situation right because they make too much money to qualify for federal subsidies or grants but not enough money to afford the really expensive health insurance premiums and the high deductible once they get there it's really the middle class that has suffered a health care system and of course there's one other thing as well do to keep in mind to south of that is the fact that we do have a lot of medical miracles we can do things today we could never do before people today may survive conditions that before would have killed them and that's wonderful they aren't always cheap power ever and at and if you're talking about the genuine cost of something I don't think any of us would really complain it's when we we hear about things like the mucus recovery systems 8 bucks for a Kleenex or a lot of whatever it is I mean I don't understand why people it in circumstances like that could be charged with I don't know fraud or something I mean that this is such blatant Galad that it will and that makes no sense go ahead and that's exactly right and that's what we need to really focus on are some what I call it common sense regulatory structures in the United States where the consumer has that information I mean quite frankly if I went to a hospital system and I knew that I was going to get $8.00 for every recovery device or clean act as we refer to it right I would probably bring my own tissues or I might find a different hospital that isn't going to do that unfortunately in today's health care system now I have the consumer don't really know all of the things that was built for and I certainly don't know them until months after I've had them done and that's a big part of the problem in the United States there's a lack of transparency and forefront cost understanding Yeah 186650 Jimbo 186-650-5462 extension 62 Tom and Port Adelaide is Washington Good evening. Hello Jim Boeheim you're doing tonight where well thank you he got the Lurd gas there and I.
