Forth between Republicans and Democrats that's a big deal what kind of people live in a calm County. Well like any big county because it's the 3rd biggest county in the state and that's the time on the left there's there's there's diversity there there's there's there's there's income diversity there this racial diversity there it is the whitest of the 3 large counties in southeastern Detroit I mean so so with Wayne County where Detroit is Oakland County. McComb County is remains the whitest of those 3 but it's becoming more diverse as well a lot of people think of it as a blue collar place and it still has those kind of roots there's a lot of union workers there as lot of auto workers there but it has become more diverse over the year with more professionals moving into the suburbs with with with greater racial diversity greater income diversity and yet it has remained as staunchly independent as it ever was taught give us some examples of how voters voted in the past and how that was predictive sure Take for instance the 20082012 elections for president in both of those elections in McComb counting voters backed Barack Obama. In some cases by by doing so giving the lie to the fact that McComb County voters only vote in terms of race or or those sorts of things they backed Obama you know 2 elections in a row but then in 2016 they turned from giving Obama 4 percent margin over Mitt Romney in 2012 to giving. Donald Trump and 11 point margin in 2016 so there's this vast sort of switch but in the opposite direction this happened in the last 2 gubernatorial elections you had Rick Snyder who was governor of Michigan winning 2 elections in McComb County a Republican and then in this last election last year Gretchen Whitmer the Democrat and she sees a 14 point swing in her direction from. As county ends up winning the state we're speaking with Todd Spangler of the Detroit Free Press about the importance of McComb County Michigan and how voters may swing in 2020 what are some of the issues that may catch their attention this time around in terms of issues when you're talking about McComb County you're talking about real working class stuff I mean you're talking about taxes you're talking about health care you're talking about creating jobs you miss the place that. It's the auto industry is the bread and butter it's going to care about what you're what you're talking about we're going to union protections all these things are really are really going to matter in a place like McComb you know is it the sort of place where. A single payer health insurance program is going to fly for free to a free college tuition for everybody in the country in large measure that might be this might be the kind of community where that doesn't do so well but this is a place that tends to vote for personalities every bit as much if not more so than policy this is a place where if you are a candidate it comes across as different as. Speaking directly to voters as being sort of larger than life as is the case with will bomb and trump the place that tends to reward you for that it reacts to personality Thanks Todd Todd Spangler of the Detroit Free Press.
