But we begin with fox 25s john monahan live in North Andover on the investigation. John, the state fire marshal he did. We just spoke to him a few minutes ago, mark. He tells us that hazmat crews are leaving for the night. Theyll be back in the morning to continue their investigation. He said partly due to the fact the that they want to have daylight, but also because of the damage from this. He says crews still have not made it into the lab that blew up. This instance, something terribly wrong, with the process, causing an explosion. Reporter state fire Marshal Steven cone says it is still unknown how that blast happened. Its startle. Reporter kayla felt the explosion. It was 2 23. We heard very loud boom and the house shook. Reporter the boom, an explosion inside the dow Chemical Plant behind her home. Caused by a chemical reaction. This chemical reacted with water, which resulted in the explosion. Reporter the chemical called trimethol aluminum is used to make electronics, things like Circuit Boards and l. E. D. Lights but fire Officials Say it is not the same chemical that exploded in 2013 killing a dow worker at the same plant. But whats caused todays reaction and explosion is unclear. At this time were focused exclusively on the mitigation and stabilization. Reporter for fire officials in North Andover, they say the town works closely with dow. And after an event like this, one of the technicians will meet us at the door and give us guidance on what were doing and what were dealing with. Reporter still, four employees received critical burns and shrapnellike wounds. Investigators want locals to know there is no risk to residents. Still live so close is a concern. Its a little bit concerning, but it was localized last time and no threat to the public and, again, same issue tonight. When hazmat crews return in the morning and once they get inside, they hope to conduct forensic tests to get a better idea what exactly took place and also be interviewing employees to see what clues they can learn from them. With a chemical explosion, resulting in blast injuries, burns to the body as well as chemical exposure. Reporter those at willows racket club practicing heard the explosion. It sounded basically kind of like a mini bomb in a way. Reporter gymgoers were confused and didnt know what to think. There was an explosion, the chemical explosion right over there. And i just toad the other lady i didnt even know there here. Sounded much louder than ice falling down off of the roof. It was really crazy. I just thought i heard a rumble of noise so went outside to see if there was any ice on the side of the building, and there was nothing. Reporter then he got a frantic call from his son. You okay. He said my friends just call immediate and said there was an explosion near the restaurant. I saw a lot of ambulances and Police Officers crowding around and then a helicopter right above us. New at 11 00, he just obtain we just obtained a picture of the man with the handgun. State Police Describe it was designed to look like a 357 revolver and we learned the suspect is a 26yearold westborough man. During the chase, the driver involved went over spike strips twice. Video, his truck only has three wheels when that chase came to an end. The suspect is currently being treated at the hospital. Weve got light winds, too, and those winds mainly out of the north. Theyre not onshore yet. Theyre not dragging in that moisture, and thats allowed for temperatures to really drop out there. Expecting to see the winds very similar down across the cape, come out of the northeast. P town just increased their wind to about 13 miles per hour. So as that happens, that will begin to bring in some clouds through the overnight hours, actually allow for temperatures to rise a bit, and notice right around 7 00, 8 00, 9 00 when you head out the door, you may see some breaks of sunshine. But as we go through the day, well notice the winds picking up out of the northeast, bringing in those clouds, and also some areas of drizzle. See some fog develop through the overnight hours, as well see the temperatures drop and dewpoints rise, we could see some black ice, especially for the areas below freezing. So i want to point out, watch your step as you head outside tomorrow. Th not gonna be widespread, but there could be some patchy black ice in spots that could cause some dangerous conditions out there.
