I dont care how many times you run around the track. I dont care how many situps you do, 21 other guys out there on the football field and work on the timing and situation football. Causing flooding, downing trees, and knocking power to hundreds of thousands. A storm that has left a deadly wake in the caribbean, killing hundreds in haiti and leaving thousands homeless there. When it began blasting florida, it was downgraded to a category 3 storm, but still packing 120mileperhour winds. Matthews winds had dropped to 115 miles an hour, but officials warrant, this storm is warn, this storm is still a real threat. South carolinas governor warns the forecast for her state has gotten worse, with major potentially dead lie storm surges, flooding and winds all predicted there. Please evacuate, even if its to a shelter. The reporter while hundreds of thousands have fled coastal South Carolina, some still are not heeding evacuation warnings. Ive been watching yeah, i guess were not too worried. Not worried enough to leave. Kevin want to give you a live look at conditions right now in jacksonville. Diane gallagher is there live and the airport reported a wind gust of 76 Miles Per Hour. Also saw a wind gust of 85 Miles Per Hour in jacksonville. Can you give us a sense of what its feeling like there right now . Like a lot of wind and this constant rain that weve been dealing with since about 4 30 a. M. This morning here in the jacksonville area. The wind is whats picked up the most, and kevin, i will give you a shot of what weve been paying attention to, and probably what best illustrates how Downtown Jacksonville has been on edge here. This is the st. Johns river and this is what had the governor sort of on edge, this is what had officials worried, this is why they thought the jacksonville could be where they saw the most inner damage and you see how high it is, you see the white caps on the river at this point, the wind has been pushing that this way, with the storm surge, theyre worried that if this goes over the banks, it goes into the city, this will create quite a bit of inner flooding here in the inland part. I can tell you that roughly 15 miles to the east of us, is Jacksonville Beach. They are experiencing that now with the storm surge. The Atlantic Ocean is simply running down first street in Jacksonville Beach, and to the the streets look like streams. There is literally water going up to the front door of some of these hotels an because some people did not evacuate, there are people who are stuck. They are stranded now in st. Augustine because of the water that matthew has pushed in to to areas. Kevin hows the situation as far as damage, is power still on in jacksonville, have you heard or seen a lot of trees coming down or any other damage . The reporter there are reports of trees down in jacksonville. Here at the hotel, where we are, we have not had mower even flicker while we were power even flicker while we were here, but other parts of the area, more than half of the county is without power at this point, so the wind gusts are responsible for much of that. Some of that does have to do with the trees. Coming down. But of course, you know here in florida, were talking more than a Million People without power. They are working 0 try to restore it, as matthew moves up. They obviously cant do that as the storm is still in one area, but once the storm leaves, the power crews come in and they try people, they have a long way to go to try to create try to fix that deficit. Kevin diane, i wanted to point out to the viewers and maybe you can give us just a sense of it, with the wind thats blowing there right now and youre not getting blown over, but youre in a sheltered location, right, for safety . The reporter so we actually were down. Ill step outside again, so you can kind of see where that water is. We were down next to the banks of the st. Johns river there. They had us move up about five stories for on the right of me and left of me, protecting us a little bit from the wind here. Now i can tell you that some of the gusts that we have been experiencing, even with the shelter, have been extremely strong. They blow your hood off, blow your jacket around, but nothing is actually broke me over in this case blowing me over in this case. Weve seen people out and about walking, thats ill advised an dangerous, but there have been people Walking Around close to the river area. Of course, officials have said, being out, but youre doing so at your own risk, while the storm is here, theyre not going to go out and rescue you. Youre on your own. Kevin stay right there and be safe. Appreciate your reports down there in the elements. Heres a look at the storm coming up the coast and this is jacksonville right here and were seeing some of the outer bands come into jacksonville, where the gusty winds and heavy rains are coming through. Last check, five inches of rain and the river she showed you, thats coming back in to the city. Usually rivers flow into the eagles, but wit the city, its blowing the water back upstream. The water comes in, cant go out, more water comes in on top of that and just keeps piling up and in undates the coastal area. Category two storm, 115 Miles Per Hour. Still forecast to jog northward, past charleston, savannah and veer off toward myrtle beach, but any one of the places could see storm come farther to the jog out of here. Thats the currents track forra track for the National Hurricane center. Coming precariously close to South Carolina, you can see the wind gusts there, up over 50 Miles Per Hour, weakening, again, on the lesser wind side of the storm. The strongest will be on the right side of the storm, as it comes up the coastline, but check out the rainfall. Boy, thats going to be intense all along the coastline. Dinnertime helms, in the 60s and 70s here under clear skies. Youll have that hear comes clouds streaming in from the south and this is changed run to run. We didnt see showers, heavy rain getting in here from the tropical rainfall streaming northward. Last nights computer model runs, now lesser in southeastern massachusetts, mostly, no do you recollect were getting showers from this front. Thats the front we talked about all week long. Thats coming late saturday night into early sunday morning. Whether we see a little extra in southeastern massachusetts is the question. 63 degrees at kickoff in sports guys will be there covering that. Halftime, 60 degrees. Heres the rain activity that im talking about coming in southeastern massachusetts, ahead of the front and then pushing on out of here. It will be fine for the red sox game, certainly going to be fine for the patriots out in cleveland, but for the red sox, back home on sunday, its going to be ok too. That rain will push out to the southeast. Saturday, weymouth, fall festival, union point, temperatures in the 60s. Increasing clouds later on in the day, but staying rainfree for the duration of the event much sevenday forecast shows the rainshowers southeastern mass, they exit and were back to clearing skies through the afternoon and sunshine for columbus day on monday. Latest observation from the Hurricane Center will be coming in this evening. Well keep watching to see if the tropical rainfall wants to get involved. Those are the things im watching ahead for our weekend forecast. No matter what, cooler air is arriving for the weekend and monday. So i hope you enjoyed the 70s and your high temperatures will only be hanging out in the 60s. Well look more closely at your weekend forecast coming up in the next halfhour.
