Police officers hitting the grounds on several banner thats been hanging at city hall for a year. The Police Union Says, its disrespectful, but the mayor refuses to take it down. Fox 25s Robert Goulston is there live, and robert, a lot of strong feelings on both sides. Mark, yeah, theyre just wrapping up here. They did about an hour worth of rally, they did talk to the media as well, they answered some questions. Its Police Officers offduty, their own time to voice their opinions. The problem is up there, the black lives matter, its not the sign itself the police are telling us, its that its on a public building. Racism still exists, and none of us are happy about it, an none of us want to face it every day, but until we do, its not going to go away. The banner has been hanging on the front of Somerville City Hall for a year. A recent letter from the Police Union President now has it raising all sorts of controversy. Its a public building. I think its a good idea for the sign to be here. The reporter residents are on both sides of the question. The head of the police union for Somerville Police department wrote a letter last week, urging the mayor to take down the black lives matter banner that was put up last year on the front of city human services. The Union President city hall. The Union President wrote we strongly object to a banner that quietly paints Police Officers as the killers of innocent citizens of color. President wrote. From my understanding, no vote was taken by any members of the union and thats our understanding and thats what the union did on its own, which is right. The reporter we did talk to some of the Union Officials here for somerville an they are telling us that they have complete support from the rank and file, even though a lot of them are not coming forward, but again, they did rally here today. Police officers from across eastern mass, they really wanted to get the word concerns were. Of course, we are following this, well have much more tonight on fox 25 news at 10 00 p. M. The reporter we reached out, vanessa, and ock, to the citys Inspectional Services division and say because the camp here in south boston was a dropin camp and not a camp, it wasnt subject to those traditional Inspectional Services, meanwhile, though, we did get some more information about the 25 youth counselors that were working with the children on tuesday. We found flowers outside this center thursday, a tribute to the young boy who lost his life, at a nearby beach tuesday afternoon. Camp counselors at the Curley Community Center in south boston alerted police 7yearold kyzer willis was missing at least 15 minutes after they realized he was gone. The family suggests it was longer than that. First to notify them there was a problem. Thursday, city officials offered no new information about the timeline or their internal investigation into this camp. Were trying to piece the time frame together. That was mayor marty walsh on wednesday. He also announced the camps director was on paid leave pending the investigation. Fox 25 learned the man running the camp was fred ahern, hired as director in 2003, earning about 97,000 a year. Comment. It was a shock to the whole family. The reporter during a vigil for kyzer, family told us they still have a lot of questions about who is watching the children at the dropin camp. We know on tuesday, on hand was the centers director, a supervisor and assistant supervisor, plus 25 counselors, ages 15 to 18. There were 56 children who showed up for the camp that day. Tragically, only 55 went home. Done. The reporter so heres the information we were able to get from the city today regarding the youth counselors that were on staff on tuesday. They tell us, 18 there were four 18yearold counselors, five 17yearold counselors. The biggest group, 12. Look, there are some thunderstorms that are pushing towards Southern New Hampshire and vermont hand these are bleeding over into northeastern massachusetts around the thunder and lightning with the storms seems to have dwindled quite a bit, but around haverhill, heavy rain, thunder, the potential for lightning too. Theres a storm thats moved its way through peterborough, New Hampshire, another one in the northernmost berkshires, southern vermont. Watching a few development in connecticut. That will continue along the front through the evening hours and stall over us and some of the heaviest rain is to the south of the boundary. You see the brightest colors in the south shore and just clipping the southern part of the boston area. Tonight on the south shore hand out to cape cod at least for tomorrow through the day when the heaviest rain arrives. Well talk about the potential for flooding and how much rain to expect. The reporter Sheriffs Department is investigating after an inmate allegedly slipped away from deputies in the sallyport. The original crime that brought inmate on his way to court makes a run for it, and escapes. But his freedom didnt last long. Vanessa fox 25s Katherine Burcham spoke to witnesses who were there as an inmate tried to get away. The reporter that inmate is safely back behind these walls tonight, but questions remain how he slipped away from deputies in the sallyport unnoticed. I came outside, because i saw somebody in yellow jump suit. The flash of color caught kevins eye in the parking lot of this auto repair shopping this morning. Inmate kevin deerheart from the near by county jail was on his way to a Court Appearance when he slipped away from deputies in the sallyport. When you drive in there, its locked up, so i dont know how that got got into that situation. The reporter he says gearheart tried to seek help from a family who was dropping off their car for service. He was in the parking lot with a lady and a guy and a girl, and i guess maybe he wanted them to give him a ride. The Reporter Police say gearheart ran to a gas station on the next street and hopped into a car at pump number four. She said theres a thief in my car. The reporter the manager says a female customer came in screaming for help after seeing gearhart behind the wheel. Yeah, she was scared. The reporter the manager says gearheart god scared and ran off, but he called 911 and police off nearby. Still in his shackles and jump suit. He is now facing additional charges from the attempted escape. He will be arraigned tomorrow. In manchester, Katherine Burcham, fox 25 news. Vanessa police are working to figure out if three shootings in lynn are connected. This was the scene just before 4 00 a. M. This morning at the intersection of forest and bull finch streets. Police say they found a victim there who had been shot in the head and was in critical about that very same time, two people walked into a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds. The essex county District Attorneys office tells us, all the victims are still alive tonight, but they have not released any more information on suspects or arrests. Mark driver of this truck died with it crashed this morning on 495 in franklin. State police say the man driving the 1997 ford truck drove off the road and into the woods, crashing into several trees. It happened near exit 17 in the northbound lanes around 6 00 a. M. This morning. Police still investigating as to why it happ no one else was injured. Vanessa a massive fire destroyed part of a home in brookline. In this video shot by a neighbor, you can see intense flames shooting from the second floor of the home on winthrop road. This happened late last night. The fire spread to the attic, but firefighters quickly put out the flames. No one was hurt. Kevin activity on Storm Tracker radar this afternoon, and were tracking every bit of it as always. And moving off toward the northeast. Thats going to be the heavy rain tomorrow. For now, watching this front dropping out of Northern New England with thunderstorms. Weve had Severe Weather in maine earlier today. There have been reports of trees down in that part of the world. But here in massachusetts, were watching heavy rains, in haverhill, up here through the New Hampshire seacoast, thunder and lightning earlier. Not seeing as much being detected right now. In haverhill, heavy rain happening right here along 110. Were going to zoom down the haverhill area and where the heaviest is locate, right along 110 and to the north of it. This is 495 coming right on through here during the time of the commute. West newbury, massachusetts, wwe fans know that well and up through merrimack, youll see the heavy rain on some of the local roadways, locust street going right over 495 in that area, so be aware, theres some heavy rain south there. Off to the south, this one has developed in munson, so out here, a soaking rain, potentially some thunder and northeast at 25 miles per hour. Worcester by 7 24 p. M. This evening, on its way by, brookfield, spencer and lester as well before it gets to the city of worcester, so be aware, that one is developing out there. Not expecting Severe Weather with these, but its possible one will get stronger and well have to keep tracking that hand keep a close eye on it. Well do that for you. This southward, midnight tonight, through northern massachusetts, sinks down to Central Massachusetts by 6 00 a. M. Thats important to note, because where that rain to our south is going to go is just to the south of this, lets call it a boundary between the tropical air to the south and the dryer air from the north and the tropical air as you would likely guess, thats where the most moisture is and the potential for the heaviest rain, so watch where that comes on through and this is showing us every three hours of rainfall, so between 11 00 a. M. , and 2 00 p. M. In the afternoon is where the heaviest heaviest of all, still back here. So were still keeping an eye on where the front is stalled and noticed drier to the north, heavier to the south. Notice the colors, really ramping up here. Between 2 00 p. M. And 5 00 p. M. , the heaviest is on the south shore and on cape cod and the islands. Again, the front stalled here, well go three hours ahead to 8 00 p. M. , between 5 00 p. M. And 8 00 p. M. , the heaviest falling on cape cod and the islands as well before it pushes on off. The heavie sst rth of boston. Dont pay so mucto specific numbers. Trend, half inch or so around boston, much more out toward cape cod, ramps up as you go out that way. All of this will vary depending on where that front ends up being located. If it stalls farther to the north, the heavier rain will make it farther north. Pushes farther south. The heavier rain gets pushed farther to the south and we will shall watching closely tonight as the front makes its way southward. Once the rain is gone, friday night, tomorrow night, it dries out for saturday. Form along that front, depending on where the front stalls will determine how much rain we get for sunday into monday, but there is additional threat of some more rain.
