East boston, if you look behind us, it is still sealed off at this hour. Crime scene tape wrapped around the area here. All this while the confrontation is still under investigation at this hour. Boston Police Responding to what they thought was a routine Domestic Violence call. When they were greeted with gunfire. Chaos overnight here in east boston. After Police Responded to a domestic disturbance call just before 11 00 last night. Which is 33yearold Kirk Figueroa. As they entered his home at 136 gladstone street. At that time, we heard officers screaming on the radio. A 303. Which signifies shots fired and an officer down. Reporter two veteran Police Officers both shot multiple times were pulled from the firefight by other officers exchanging gunfire with figueroa who lived in the house. Their fellow officers out of the line of fire. So they were in a protected zone. And the officers continued to engage in a gun exchange. Reporter figueroa who police say was wearing a ballistic vest and armed with an Assault Rifle is shot and killed by police. Residents were asked to shelter in place overnight until Officers Determined there were no other suspects. They were able to neutralize the subject who was armed with some sort of Assault Rifle a ballistic vest. Reporter figueroas Ford Crown Victoria was towed late this morning from the crime scene. Now the District Attorney will lead the investigation into this terrifying confrontation. We will do a very thorough and transparent investigation into these events. To determine what happened here. Reporter investigators assigned to the Suffolk CountyDistrict Attorneys office are waiting to execute a search warrant here at the crime scene to begin processing behind inside the house. The investigation is ongoing. Right now everyone around here is anxious for answers into what was the motive for all of. This live from east boston this afternoon, steve cooper, 7 news. Christa all right, steve. Thank you. Those two officers are now out of surgery. Kris they are being treated at mass. General. That is where we find victoria warren. Reporter well, we have gotten some encouraging news it has been an intense morning here at mass. General. There were heroics to pull these officers to safety. Once they got here to the hospital, their lives were in the hands of the surgeons. Now, all morning long, top brass from the Boston Police department could be seen keeping watch at the hospital. The Police Commissioner, mayor, and District Attorney all constantly checking in. The Police Commissioner called the officers conditions extremely critical. A 28year veteran shot four times. Times. The d. A. Says it was a long night. But now great relief after a successful surgery. The patrolmans union says they remain in i. C. U. Other officers on the scene gave these officers lifesaving first aid. One officer had his hand in one of the wounds. I think that was instrumental. In getting the officer down to mass. General. Quickly. They have some very serious wounds. They have undergone blood transfusionings. They classified them as extremely critical. Reporter there was a rev heend at mass. General here overnight. Who pled 50 glifers prayer. The Police Commissioners asking for continued prayers. The mayor says tonight at city hall plaza, there will be a moment of reflection. Live from mass. One neighbor tells us it sounded like a war zone. You can see this is writ all happened at this home on gladstone street in the orient east boston. You can see the crime scene tape remains up. Police remain here on the scene. And neighbors are praying for those officers. Cell phone video captures the gunfire between Boston Police and an alleged armed suspect. This video taken from inside a neighbors home. Outside, some witnesses were on gladstone street when the gunfire erupted. When i came out of the house, he was popping off still in the house. When i came out, i seen swat running into the house. It was rapid. Seconds. It was rapid. Like, very, very quick. Rapid fire. Police searched for a possible second suspect. They ordered a sheller in place. It was just police. You know, they kept flying up. They were flooding up. It was like a war zone for a few minutes. The police were everywhere. They were on the streets telling us stay in the house. They wouldnt let us out. Because i guess there was a search going on at that time. I mean, i have lived here 20 years. Never seen anything like. This reporter for those still outside, they didnt kn only that the situation seemed extremely serious as police and swat went doortodoor. I walked up the steps. All of a sudden, the whole street swarmed with cops. Swat comes out. Everything. They are telling us to get off the street. Reporter neighbors found out two officers were shot and a suspect was killed. A nightmare playing out in real life right in front of them. That is a sad thing. Especially you feel for the cops who, you know, they have been under the microscope for so long. They are human beings, too. Fighting for their lives. You cant help but pray for them. Reporter Boston Police dont know the suspect. The city clerk says police would have done a background check on him when he was approved as a constable for the city of boston. This is the picture of Kirk Figueroa posted on the web site for code blue protection services. The site says figueroa towned the company after serving in the Army Reserves and working as a private investigator in florida and a prison guard in West Virginia. The glossy web site says the Company Provides a variety of services from bailrunning to armored car training. A West Virginia prison guard in 2014. But only for a week. Qigt, officials there say, when he said he had another job. Figueroa was sworn in as a boston city constable in july. Approved by the mayor and city council after a background check by Boston Police. The as constable, he could serve warrants, subpoenas and other legal papers. He could carry a constables badge and in some cases, make arrests. This morning, the nine Police Officers who were treated over at tufts medical senter were police. Reporter after the Police Officers were shot, others the Police CommissionerWilliam Evans says officers dragged the two who were wounded to safety as they exchanged fire so they could get inside a protected zone. Several assisting officers applied first aid to stop the bleeding. Now, as you mentioned, nine officers were taken to Tufts Medical Center for minor injuries. As well as stress. I spoke with one of the doctors there. A psychiatrist who told me that First Responders react both physically and emotionally in the moment. That is because their bodies go into emergency mode. As they as well as the safety of others. Kit be sometimes difficult to come down off that level of alertness. It is difficult to understand what First Responders go through. Because on a daily basis, like i said, it is variable. And i think that we all need to support them as much as you. Can before you even get involved in a situation, fizz.
