Im Jodi Whitworth there are more than 13 thousand teens living homeless in across the state, many of them not by choice. But students from around the metro are putting themselves in the shoes of the homeless tonight channel 13s Reid Chandler has the story. It may not be ideal. But these kids are spending the night from the perspective of the homeless. 16 10 51 i try and say to some of the kids that are here today, if they look up and see some stars tonight, our homeless kids are looking up at those exact same stars. And they dont have a bed to go to. Toby oberry director, iowa Homeless Youth centers its the tenth year of Reggies Sleepout. An event honoring reggie kelly, a homeless boy from des moines who was found dead by the Des Moines River in 2001. Organizers say reggies story is 16 05 51 they dont have a home school theyre connected with, everything is new. They dont know all the resources that are in place. Toby oberry director, iowa Homeless Youth centers with around 13 thousand Homeless Individuals in the state of iowa, and about 16hundred of those under the age of 18. Reggies sleepout, which raises nearly 140,000 dollars a year for iowa Homeless Youth centers, helps find a bed for every head to sleep on. 16 07 50 the goal now is to get these kids stably housed and selfsufficient in the shortest amount of time as possible. 16 08 05 its really working on that plan of independence and selfsufficieny. Getting them stably housed, getting them their own apartment, their own place, and kind of helping them as they progress through their life. Like this 15foot tall converse shoe its the product of work of about 20 students over at Johnston High School. Toby oberry director, iowa Homeless Youth centers keeping with that shoe theme, the students from Johnston High School also hosted a shoe drive leading up to the sleepout tonight. They collected around 50 pairs of shoes to donate to iowa Homeless Youth shelters. Hillary the belle plaine Area High School is banning the 21gun salute for the First Time Ever at the schools annual Veterans Day Assembly. Because the school says it promotes gun violence. However. A post 39 legioneer has offered his own yard across from the school for the assembly. But the news has angered some people in belle plaine. As veterans firing blank rifles at the assembly has been a fun and safe tradition for as long as some students can remember. Legioneers are especially disappointed. As firing the rifles was a favorite part for some. Post 39 legioneers believe that high schools across the state, and possibly even country, may soon be following suit. Though belle plaine is the First High School in the area to ban firing blank rifles at ther assembly. Post thirtynine commander pam munson. Who chose not to appear on camera. Is worried that its only a matter of time before other schools ban veterans from taking place in traditional performances. The legion group says it will fight to continue the tradition next year. As for the school, it has yet to comment on the issue. Fire Service Members from across the country and even strangers gathered today to honor two kansas city firefighters killed in the line of duty earlier this week. Thousands of people gathered in kansas citys Sprint Center to say goodbye to the firefighters. Monday evening they pulled two people out of an Apartment Building before a wall collapsed. Larry leggio and john mesh were killed and two others were injured. Even some members of the Des Moines Fire Department attended the funeral today.
