The i35 opened back up after the stretch between ames and clear lake viability. However, high winds today are still causing white out conditions. In the last day and a half the iowa state patrol has responded to 141 calls for service. Resulting in 29 vehicle accidents, seven of which included injuries. Sgt. Nathan ludwig says the stretch near mile marker 144 was the worst in the state causing big problems for semi drivers who had no where to go. the problem was the visibility and finding a place for these trucks to get off the interstate because it was almost a parking lot out there and you only have so many exits to utilize there before you have to shut these interstates down to get these semis off the road. although the interstate is back recommend traveling unless its absolutely necessary. A tow ban still remains in effect for the area leaving dozens of cars still in the ditches. Des Moines Police have released the name of a man killed in a fire. That they believe he intentionally set. Neighbors called 911 shortly of this home in the 2500 block of 59th street. But when officers arrived, there was no sign of him. Then, about an hour later, police werrcalled back to the same house and found 48 year old Neil Johnston inside. Officers say he threatened them with a handgun. As they tried to get johnston to come out, fire erupted inside the home. Police even tased him, but that didnt work either. 22 09 16 what started out as a disturbance investigation quickly escalated into a rescue operation as they saw a fire develop inside that house. The resident in that home, resisted all their efforts to rescue him from that home. He had threatened officers and they attempted to force entry into the home to pull him out, but they were forced back by the smoke and flames 38 once the firefighters got inside the home, it only took about two minutes to put out the flames. Police say johnstons death and the circumstances around it are still under investigation. We still dont know what caused a fatal house in Marion County sunday firefighters were called to the henning home near knoxville just before midnight on sunday. 79year old Ronald Henning made it out of the burning home. But his 77year old wife patricia did not. Authorities are still investigating the fire and had no updates on the cause today. The iowa utilities board could act this week to either approve. Or derail. A multistate oil pipeline project. The Bakken Pipeline would connect north Dakota Oil Fields to an oil pipeline in illinois. North dakota, south dakota and illinois officials have already approved it. But the whole project could be lost without iowa agreeing to the plan as well. Today the iowa utilities board held a second day of hearings on the plan in des moines. More hearings are scheduled tomorrow and thursday. A decision could come at the end of those hearings. But the board isnt promising that. They have not put any timetable on when a decision will be made. If they do approve the pipeline, Eminent Domain would have to be used to claim much of the land needed for the after years of baby steps, a group of medical cannabis supporters hopes this is the year that legislators take a giant leap forward. The house and senate are again negotiating that amount right now. Meanwhile the republican controlled house still hasnt voted on setting the funding level for the 2018 budget year either. But, im doing the best i can. the path that led de leon to this point begins mdash;where his story will end mdash;in madera, california mdash;with his family. he wants to come home with his kids, his grand kids. The family. de leons sister elizabeth worries about his health mdash;hes a type 2 diabetic. yes. It worries me very much that something might happen to my brother. Im going to be torn apart. their parents came to madera legally from mexico when de the veterans most trying battle would be waged decades later following the death of his mother. he would take my mom everywhere. When my mom passed away, that really pushed him to the edge. de leon fell into depression mdash; at 63 mdash;he got hooked on heroin. Eventually arrested for possession mdash;he served almost three years. Near the end of his term at soledad state prison, immigration Customs Enforcement agents home. i said what . He said theyre they cant. October 2009. An immigration judge ordered de leon deported to mexico mdash;a country he hadnt seen in more than 50 years. i was in shock. I couldnt believe it. I couldnt believe they would deport a veteran with an honorable discharge. In tijuana mdash;de leon had no he spent his first few weeks homeless. if you knew you were going to be deported, would you have enlisted at all in the military . no, i dont think so. If i knew they were going to do me wrong no. de leon figured he was the only us military veteran deported to tijuana mdash;until he met hector barajas. i basically opened up my doors to veterans that were deported. a former paratrooper in the 82nd airborn mdash;hector mdash;who grew up in la was also living mdash;deported mdash;in tijuana mdash;and knew dozens of veterans like de leon. In 2013 he founded this deported veteran support house. we believe none of these men should be left behind. We talk about supporting the troops, lets keep supporting these men. Treat these men with honor. there are an estimated 100,000 people deported from the u. S. Living in tijuana. Theres no Government Agency that keeps of those people are veterans. Hector, just anecdotally thinks that there are a couple of hundred, if not more than a thousand. 15 vets have come through the support house so far mdash;for food mdash;temporary housing mdash; sometimes mdash;just to feel mdash;they belong. do you feel like youre family here . Something Like that. Yes. de leons resigned to the possibilityhe may never again see the united states. But both he and hector know mdash;theyre entitled to a proper veterans burial. ive been told the only way i can return is dead. So, if dead is the only way i can return, i would like to be buried with my friends in the Catholic Cemetery in madera, california. why would they honor us only when we die . Theyre going to give an American Flag to our families and say thank you for your service to your country. Immigration Customs Enforcement says because of privacy concerns they cant comment on any specific cases.
