Newman will not get jail time for tax charges. Charges against newman and Richland County councilman kelvin washington came up after a state investigation into the use of penny sales tax money. Jack kuenzie is at the Richland CountyJudicial Center with the latest. Dawndy and charlesthe former City Council Member wasted no time resolving problems. A bond hearing this morningand a guilty plea this afternoon. Newman pleaded guilty to failing to file state tax returns for the years 2012 and 2013. He toto a judge he thought t d filed for those years. His admission involved back taxes totalling a little more than 98 hundred dollars which he has agreed to pay along with prosecution costs of an additional thousand dollars. These charges came about as the state department of revenue was looking into the backgrounds of people connected to the penny tax effortbut in to make it clear his issues were personal and have nothing to do with tax revenues. Hes not involved in the sales tax investigation. He pled straight up to two counts of failure to file taxes and what its telling us is that theres no plea agreement that he was involved in some conspiracy that they were still investigating that there would be a plea agreement that would have provided for him to cooperate, take a polygraph, all of those things that you would see in other statewide grand jury investigations. This is simple a case of him not filing taxes for two years. The case against councilman washington will take longer to resolve. He is facing three counts of failing to file for the years 2012 through 2014and the amounts a a much larger. His income for those years added up to almost 427 thousand dollars and he has not entered a plea as of now. County Council Chair torrey rush issued a statement this afternoon saying the council will serious violation of the law or betrayal of the public trust. He says all parties need to act quickly to get to the bottom of this. Live at the Richland CountyJudicial Center jack kuenzie wis news ten. President obama today announced a series of executive actions designed to reduce gun violence, including expanding background checks for buyers. Meanwhile, republicans, including House Speaker paul ryan, say the move is an abuse of power. Dianne gallagher is in washington. Were here today, not to debate the last mass shooting but to do something to try to prevent the next one. President barack obama detailing his multiple executive actions on gun control encouraging states to report people who and expanding background checks for some private sales. Republicans on the campaign trail have railed against the president s plan. Texas or president ial candidate president obama is once again going to abuse his power. Florida or president ial candidate when im elected president , on the first day, behind my desk, those orders are gone. Obamas proposals to ramp up Mental Health care and add hundreds of fbi and atf agents to better enforce current laws and focus on background checks, will all require millions in funding which must be secured by congress. And surrounded by families and victims from mass shootings, the president made an emotional plea. And from every family who never their loved one would be taken from our lives by a bullet from a gun. Every time i think about those kids it gets me mad. In washington, im dianne in South Carolina, the president s gun plan would have the biggest impact on gun shows and local gun dealers. But one expert says dont expect much change will whitson explains. President obama announced his executive gun regulations to applause. We do not have to accept this carnage as the price of freedom cheers but to South CarolinaGun Owners Association president and local gun shop owner Gerald Stoudemire the president s remarks fell flat. Im very skeptical that it will accomplish anything but make people feel good. The executive action stoudemire says doesnt break any new ground in the debate over gun regulation. Hes reinstating whats already federal guidelines. For example the president s order to look into new Gun Technology doesnt create new laws instead it gives an order to Government Agencies already under the executive branch to do research. And the executive action doesnt change the federal 3 day waiting period though it perform background checks during the waiting period. I really dont see the advantage to that, somebodys got to pay those people. What does change in the current federal gun policy is the addition of background checks gun sales outside of the gun shop closing a hotly debated loophole. It doesnt matter if youre doing it over the internet or a gun show. No matter where you do it, or what you do. I called organizers for several gun shows scheduled around South Carolina for the month of january one organizer said they had no plans to change the upcoming show in columbia, and when asked about the background check requirement, said they couldnt answer any questions. Ww, wis news 10 South Carolina lawmakers have also introduced several prefiled bills dealing with stricter gun regulations for the upcoming legislative session. Today, zoo keepers at the london zoo are taking a workers are using cameras, calculators, and clipboards to count the critters during the weeklong campaign. They have to count every resident of the zoo, including every insect, fish, and bird. The zoo is home to more than 17thousand animal silverback gorillas to tiny leafcutter ants. Obviously animals dont sit still for very long, so it really depends on what animals you are working with. But the aquarium certainly has some of the largest challenges because the fish are on the move, swimming in and out of rock work, and in the coral reef system its very challenging, so theyll actually take a a ill photo of the tank to avoid double counting. New arrivals in the last year include a baby western lowland gorilla and a litter of african hunting dog pups. Tiny creatures like ants, are counted in colonies, but all others are recorded individually. The annual census is required under the license of the zoo. The data is used for zoo management and International Breeding programs for endangered animals.
