Inside the state house, a moraleand pay boostmay be on the way for thousands of South Carolina state employees. Midlands senators are pushing a plan to give those workers one of their biggest pay raises in more than a decade. Jack kuenzie has more from todays announcement at the state house. Dawndystate employees got a modest 800 dollar bonus last year. But theyve only been given small raises two out of the last seven years. In fact you might have to go since State Government granted workers a raise of as much as five per cent. But that is what a Bipartisan Group of senators thinks is possible this year because the state has a large surplus. Their proposal would provide raises at state agencies and collegesand cost about 75 Million Dollars. Richland republican john courson is one of the measures leading sponsors. I do think theres some sentiment that state employees have not been rewarded but have not whined about it, have not complained about it because of the Great Recession of 2008. We have the revenue stream now to do it. We can do it without any tax increase, so lets reward them and thank them for their service. The state employees Association Says about three quarters of state workers are making less than 40 thousand dollars a year. Members say many employees are on public assistance or forced to work second jobs to make ends meet. Senator courson says getting the pay raise through the General Assembly will meet its toughest challenge in the house. If it is approved, the raises would become effective july 1st. South carolina residents may not have won the giant 1. 6 billion Powerball Jackpot, but at least one of them is walking away with a cool 100,000. The owner of the dam says it could cost up to five Million Dollars to fix. Town leaders have reached out to fema for financial help. A walking trail for the town was supposed to go over the dam so theyre hoping the feds will view it as public space. A meeting on the dam is scheduled for next month. Lexington is also kicking off the new year by launching projects designed to cut down on traffic. The town installed new in sync Traffic Signals at five intersections close to downtown. That includes where east main street as well as lake drive. Town Officials Say the new signals dont change based on a timer but rather how many cars are building up at the light. If the number of cars is over the average for a given time, the light will change automatically to reduce the congestion. Lexington is aiming to have 35 intersections equipped with these lights by the end of next year. We have crews out at night installing the cameras. As soon as they get a complete intersection installed theyll plug it up. Itll start working with the five that we have current online and then go from there right on down the line. Next on wis, why one skin cancer survivor is pleading for you to not be a statistic of the sun. Break have you ever had a health you really should have it checked, but you put it off . A woman in conway did and she lost part of her face because of it. Her desire to tan in the sun and tanning beds lead to a powerful lesson she wants to share with you and some pics are tough to see. 06 15 16 26 2 25 2 39 pictures from yesteryear show jenny faulk as she has spent most every day since she was a little girl. Barefoot, bathing suits, tank tops, shorts. And i never wore sunscreen. Jenny learned a super tough lesson about overexposure to sun. And the lack of wearing any sun protection. That awareness started in 2014 when a bump developed on her nose. It would be itchy, dry, and i would scratch and scratch. And id put moisturizers on it. And it would just never go away. She thought she was allergic to her moisturizer so she changed to a new product. And then it got to where it was just getting bigger like wider and i thought well somethings not right here. Its just not going away. Jenny finally went to a dermatologist. The minute she saw me she said, how long has that been on your nose . and i said a year, maybe a little more. And i knew by the look on her face that it was more than dry skin. Jenny had basal cell carcinoma. These pictures are difficult to see, but theyre the reality jenny faced. Her delay in getting treatment allowed the skin cancer to spread so viciously, doctors had to chunk of her cheek. Dr. Todd lefkowitz with lexington Plastic Surgery at Lexington Medical Center then redesigned and repaired her face in a threestage reconstruction. We actually took her forehead here, raised it up and then turned it down to make her nose. At the same time, because a large part of her cheek was missing, we had to take cheek skin and cheek tissue that was beside it, raise it up and move it over to try and create a more junction. Lefkowitz then took cartilage from jennys ear and put it in her nose to give it more support. We took a little bit of skin and we put it as a skin graft on the undersurface to line the internal part of the nose so when she breathes some of that air can flow easier and be humidified as it goes through. After the extra flap of skin on the nose from the supply, dr. Lefkowitz was able to detach it from the forehead giving it a smoother appearance. The hope is that no one gets into her position. Obviously, the earlier you catch skin cancer, whether its melanoma or nonmelanoma, basal cell or squamous cell, its very treatable and often times, its treatable without surgery. Susie has her face back, but only after a very invasive treatment plan that could have been avoided. If its something there that doesnt go away within a couple weeks, get it looked at. Get it looked at. Dont wait. Dr. Lefkowitz emphasizes the need to bring up to your doctor anything questionable on your body. The worst thing you can do is have a concern and wish it away cause often times, it doesnt go away and a lot of times it just gets worse. The risk of basal cell had increases 73 if you tan six times per year in high school or college. Also worth noting more people develop skin cancer because of tanning than develop lung cancer because of smoking.
